I guess Happy Hackers won't be bothered by that pesky backspace key either.

  2. Hmm.. on Server Room Environment Monitoring? · · Score: 1

You're sitting in the room. I think the monitoring part is handled. You can use your trusty skin for that. If you feel hot, chances are your systems do too. You even have a redundant monitoring system if you have co-workers in the room. :)

MRTG is great for tracking. Almost any decent piece of network-connected hardware will have a temperature sensor in it that can be polled via SNMP (which MRTG uses by default). It's just a little more complicated than the default setup. Be careful though, I've been monitoring four Extreme switches internal temperature this way, and the accuracy of 24-port ones varies widely while the 48-port ones are dead on. --Matt

  3. Um... on Old HP DeskJet/ScanJet Power Supplies Failing? · · Score: 5, Informative

Almost any power supply, unless very well regulated will show a voltage higher than its rated voltage if you test it with no load. That's not likely to be the problem.

  5. Using GPS to locate what?! on Do You Know Where You Live? · · Score: 1

What information are they using to figure the lines? Do the old documents showing lines have lat/lon to 6 decimal places or something? Maybe we're talking about even number boundaries, but it seems like locating the corner of a barn with GPS and measuring 30 feet (or so) off of it is still inaccurate.

  6. It's not THAT hard.. on Computers That Thrive in Salty, Humid Environments? · · Score: 5, Informative

There are tons of regular computers onboard sea vessels, the way they get around problems is to make the environment where the computers are NOT like a boat. Air conditioning, for managing humidity and temperature goes a long way to keeping electronics happy. If you want something that can get salt water splashed on it, you're talking something different.

Plastic is an obvious answer. It's resistant to water, salt, heat, etc.. Underwater camera housings are made out of plastic and work very well. For cooling, you can do a heatpipe arrangement with aluminum heatsinks on the inside and out.

The USGS has built entire PC's that are made to reside underwater for days logging data - they put them in watertight aluminum boxes and bind the heatsinks to the sides. Works great.

  7. What about Atlanta?!?! on Wireless Clouds for Good and Ill · · Score: 1

  8. The fed should pony up some $$ on Feds to Require Digital Receivers In All New TVs? · · Score: 1

If they're taking the broadcast stations's spectrum, and forcing manufacturers to build digital receivers into TV sets, why not give some money up front to broadcasters to cover some of their costs - since the FCC will be getting ten-fold of that money back when they auction off the spectrum theyy're taking. And, provide rebates on TV's that have digital receivers in them when sold in markets that have digital broadcasters. I mean, we're already so far in the hole, what's a few more billion, right?

Slashdot really needs its own cache of sites it links to. Maybe they should buy one of those google boxes in the ads.

Um, sure you can do it with VNC, or you can get a Matrix KVM switch (not a name brand) that is a many systems to many consoles layout. They even have IP-based consoles (software that will tie into the switch) for the 2-mile away ones. We have an older model here (non-IP) that works great. It all runs over a pair of cat5 cables for each point. 40+ servers, 5 consoles throughout the building for the various user groups, logins on the consoles integrated with the domain decide which servers you can choose from. Works great. Ours is by Avocent. --Matt
