    This really seems like stuff that should be a built in browser preference: like maybe an option to only allow audio out of the visible tab.

    There's only a few sites I know I want sound from so that's video sites and a few music sites. So I'd like all sites muted unless I've white-listed them. I'm also fairly confident that 99.9% of other users feel the same. All those in agreement, shout, aye!

    Stupidly I hadn't given it much thought. I'd just assumed that if they (Google) collected any information, it was purely statistical rather than linked to an individual... I feel violated now! :O

    Are you saying that GA is tracking users between sites and that data is being used to inform the advertising?

    I was under the impression that GA was simply used by webmasters to track their own usage only, which doesn't seem entirely unreasonable. But if the same data is being further exploited then that would be an issue.

    Are all Macs bootable from USB now? And is this a recent thing? I've never been able to get my 2007/2008ish MacBook 3.1 to boot Linux from a USB, so I've always had to burn it to CD first.

    I've driven through that once -- by accident mind, but once you get within a mile or so, you get sucked in... or I did anyway! Also, everyone else seems to know exactly where they're going, so there's no real-stopping and waiting on that thing... it's nuts! Strangely, I did manage to hit all the correct exits on the first go, so maybe it works.

    Not sure -- I know they did state recently (well, a few months back) that they wanted to get people off 3.5 because they wanted to end-of-life it. Hopefully 3.6 will remain for a bit longer.... but you know it'll end in the end!

    Since you're on Win7, you shouldn't have any problems upgrading to FF5 though. It's Ubuntu user's (like myself) who update via the repository, and switching to a different version of FF would involve a small amount of work... and we're not used to that kind of thing! :D

    But I'd guess you got an update to 3.6.18 today? (I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 also running FF 3.6 and I got an update today).

    Slippery slope that... the ISPs will be charging customers for different "service packages" and also charging the suppliers for being connected to their customers.

    Personally I'm all for charging per usage with the guarantee that that usage will be available 24x7 -- it's simple and fair.

    I'd like to try Unity before actually installing anything, but when I boot from the Ubuntu 11.04 live-CD, I just get a Gnome desktop.

    Does anyone know if I can try Unity without actually installing it?

    Not run it for a few years now, but VMware Workstation used to be "entertaining" on Ubuntu. I was always able to get it to work in the end, but I did kind of "fear" the kernel update, and if I was short of time, I'd put off kernel updates until I knew I had time to fix the problems.

    I'd like to be able to sign up for accounts with different network providers and be able to choose which I want to use, when I want to use them.

    The site is responding *very* slowly for me, and says:

    Our servers are experience a huge amount of traffic. We will be back very shortly. Thank you for your patience.
    Update: we are setting up new servers quick for handling load of traffic. We hope we can get things up and running very soon. Thanks again!
    Update: Traffic has soared till 14 M/B second but we now have clones that are accesible at this point. The server balancing is kicking in now, meanwhile you can go to any of the following mirrors:

    Thanks for your patience! We are working hard to keep things up in this traffic. (This kind of hit us by surprise)

    However, I can only view one image... all the others require me to log into facebook and allow access to my personal info!! So... that ain't gonna happen.
