There is no "valor" in modern warfare. That is long past. But it is no surprise that people like you have not gotten that message...
Says the person who's never been in combat. Only those who haven't served and/or haven't been in combat make comments like that. Is it your lack of first hand experience in matter, or a lack of comprehension of the English language?

I'm sorry I don't see anything about whether or not you feel a particular military action was justified or any kind moral acceptance. Acts of bravery happen in combat whether or not you agree with the justification for military action or what side you are on.
Yeah, yeah...I know, don't feed the trolls. Sometimes I can't help myself.

Apparently nothing. It will really suck when your new $60,000 Sun Server gets hosed because someone put a copy of the latest backstreet boys music on it.
chances are this won't be an issue for many here on/. as many of us run *nix systems, the 'sploits/software/malware they plan to use this for this activity will likely be for windowz and will likely be laughed at by our kernels...assuming the malicious code makes it through the firewalls, intrusion detection system, and packet inspection rules...
i'm sure you are right...i just couldn't find crap on their site or google when i was looking at ati cards...but i've been known to miss things...thus the sig:-)
1.) real...many people use winamp (or xmms) instead, but an easy to use prog that supports a crap load of codecs (which should come with it), legal dvd decryption, etc...would be nice...(and yes i use xine with libcss, mplayer, xmms and others...but they are all seperate apps). nevermind that they have ported older versions already...
2.) ati...hell, if they adopted a model like nvidia for driver release, they could compeate beter with nvidia...not a bad move on their part...
3.) hp, lexmark, or anyone else who makes scanners. let's face it...even with sane (and supporting packages), scanner support in linux has pretty much sucked.
4.) Apple...sweet fsck'ing BOFH! why is it so hard for them to port the quicktime codecs (even if binary only) to linux???
5.) there are others that i would like, but they have decent alternatives in linux...if only underdeveloped.
now of course...these are just my opinions...and i'm sure there will be a slew of posts denouncing my choices and listing their alternatives that already exist...but it's just what i would like to see...
You never served did you? Talk about military training once you have gone through it.
Very few people in the military get "psychologicaly conditioned" as you put it. People volunteer, they are not drafted anymore. Many of the units that go into combat are highly competitive, volunteer units. You don't get put into the Airborne, Rangers, Marine Recon, SEALs, etc...you must apply for them. These people already have the predisposition and mindset required for combat. since we all choose to serve, we all know what could be required of us to see and do in wartime. i think the military members are the LAST ones that want to fight, kill, and die.
whether or not war is necessary is of course up for debate. IMHO it's really a function of our nature, so whether or not it is "necessary" is essetially a non-issue. all we can do is hope to keep casualties (both civilian and military) to a minimum.
*nix fonts are ugly, this has nothing to do with the server subsytem of X. people just need to create some nice fonts for X. (i have found a few to my liking, but i hear people bitching about it).
how about being able to change resolution on the fly...that would be a better addition to X than a new font system.

This is a good thing(tm), however i'm using debian.

we all know and love apt, but even in unstable we will have to wait for these cool new features. i guess one has to choose between bleeding edge and fairly secure/stable;-) */
of course...i'm waiting for my favorite distro to realese them...duh...
First of all, as everyone else points out, it's a non-issue. The government will do what they want, the terrorists are more than likely using opensource encryption, etc...
for the sake of argument, let's say you can ban the military from using open source. what about those linux clusters that help break "bad guy" encryption, or the clusters they use to similate any number of things including nuclear weapon blasts. would you rather we go back to dropping nuks on remote south pacific islands?
how about this...i'm in the US Air Force. does that mean i can't run linux on all my machines in my dorm room? i know it's a stretch, but i do live on a military base and use my computers to contact people in my office regarding work (unclassified of course). couldn't that be taken as "use by the government"? what about a previous posters thought of saying "can't be downloaded for use by members of the military"?
sorry, it had to be done. in all seriousnes, no matter how valid a point he may have, i'm not sure i want to trust someone who develops telecom theory out of a childhood nightmare...maybe i'm just odd...
um, the NSA has already modified linux (the kernel) so that it will meet their standards. redhat is named as a tested distro...see this for details. The biggest problem is that the US government seems to think that they must rely on M$ software (in the unclassified environment at least) for things like exchange and ease of use for the "typical" user.
this is simple posturing at it's finest. of course...the government's high performance systems (read clusters) aren't running windows anyway. this won't change anything.
They hear "disallow... users... installing software... illegal... company libel..." and hear $ker$chink$. Anything technical . . . it's just deer in the headlights.
reminds me of the "stack overflow" described in one of the BOFH articles here
This is why your BOFH is who he/she is...he/she understands this technology and is thus the best person to make recomendations, so yes, we do deserve that fear and respect. would you ask a beancounter about marketing advice? no...
of course...when they decide on policy and end up getting bitten, we (the admins) are left holding the bag. none of the policy making power and all the responsibility...if that doesn't turn you into a true BOFH, nothing will.
hhhmmm...let's...AOL and MSN both have propritary winblowz spyw^H^H^H^H clients. they loose many of their customers after the trial period as many don't want to pay for their advertisements, poor customer service, etc.
now let's look at my local cable provider. their network has been fairly reliable thus far. no software to install (though they do try and convince you to run their install program that puts their logo in the corner of IE and sets up your mail settings). my only REAL complaints with my cable service is that they block port 80, (because they don't want me to run a "server"...i guess they think a web server is the only type???) and i can only transmit at 128k while downstream is supposed to max out at 1.5M.
of course, i can live with those small irritations when i'm downloading the latest kernel source, mozilla, p0rn, and openoffice in a matter of min. instead of hours.
it's not to often that we truly give tribute to those that do these things for the betterment of humanity. most of us have become complacent about orbital flight.
it's not about what they do, but why they do it. these people were out there to learn, to further the advancement of humanity. they were not out there for political reasons, nor economical agendas. they knew the dangers and accpeted them.
personaly i love linux for many reasons...stability, free, the ability to tinker with the guts...etc.
that said, i use kde because it's pretty and is very user friendly. i can sit any of my windows friends that know crap all about computers down in front of kde and they can still use it. i use debian because package management is an absolute breaze. the open office and mozilla packages work great "out of the box". what is my one major gripe? multimedia apps suck.
after fighting with several players, trying to find the best x output driver, trying to get libcss to work right (which it only does for some packages), i have to agree that there is a problem in this area. hell, most of the players don't work all the way, don't support codecs that others do, etc. it's a fucking nightmare.
oh...and yes, to all those command line nazis: i do know the power of (and use) my command line...i don't want to use it for multimedia. command lines are for software installation and other misc. administrative tasks...not for playing mp3s with nicely organized playlists or dvds.
well, that certianly is the stero type...but in my personal experiance that's not always the case. grated i don't know that many people, but the people i do know that are into anime are geeks. they range in age from college age to their mid 30's. many of them are married with young kids. (not that they let their kids watch much anime due to violence, sex, etc...)
i think anime is more about a certian culture (geek culture in this case) as opposed to an age group. but that's just an oppinion.
