No, I have no idea, I only worked in the product group. That means I have no idea? Okay. Exchange was a replacement for Microsoft Mail and Calendar, and during its inception, SMTP was not on the agenda, idiot. The fact remains that it did what it was supposed to do FROM THE BEGINNING, and kicked the crap out of ALL of its competitors, while gaining a foothold in corporate America, as Notes servers were kicked to the curb. DENY THAT! I am STILL waiting for mail someone sent me on a Notes server in our test lab 14 years ago. Think the attachment will come through too?
I worked in the Exchange group responsible for beating Notes. Its not like Notes made it difficult or anything. Remember VIM? Sure, back in the days when we beat Notes, we thought people were more interested in actually gettting their mail, then whether or not they could all collaberate in trying to figure out where their mail went. Notes sucked early and never recovered. Exchange started out good and only got better. There are 100K+ employee Exchange installations all over the world that work just fine. There has not been a day that Notes existed where it didnt just suck in all kinds of ways. We barely had to pitch Exchange to get businesses off of Notes, we just went down the list of suckage and asked which items applied to their current environment. The rest is history. I wont even go into NotesScript 2.0. My hands might start shaking just remembering the suckage.

If Steve has lost weight, good for him.
BUSINESS is about beating the competition.
Huh?
We agree
Cant wait forever with my money doing nothing, it was only going to get worse.
Having worked with J. during Microsoft's internet transition, I truly believe he is the smartest person who ever worked there, short of Simonyi and Cutler.
Its just stupid.
Back in the day (I hate that phrase), we were not about hating, we were about winning. I still remember the day when Ballmer smiled and said we were going to cut off Netscape's oxygen. It wasnt hateful, it was factual. Those Netscape clowns thought we were over, and that they would bury Microsoft. Steve didnt throw a chair, we knew what to do and we did it. Some call it illegal? Fuck them. Any company in Microsoft's position would have done the same. Ask for forgiveness, not permission. Nobody can say that from version 4 forward, Explorer didnt kick the crap out of Navigator. We built a better product, period. That I use Firefox today exclusively is a sign that Microsoft lost focus. If not for Office and Exchange, it would all be over but the shooting.
As Steve has gotten older and fatter, so has the company.
As Ballmer's temper and desire to kick has been moderated by exposure, so has the company lost its edge.
When I worked at Microsoft, the company was all about beating the snot out of the competition. Now, winning doesnt seem to be the goal anymore. Its all about growth, benefits, process and PR.
Ballmer used to stock the halls screaming, "Oh, you WILL ship, or you wont be here!" Now, from what I hear, its more like "Oh, please ship on time, okay guys?" Mark L. got it right, they cant ship anymore. Vista is a fucking disaster, whether it ships or not. Today is the first day in 20 years that I dont own a share of Microsoft stock. If Microsoft is going to change, they should put J. Allard in charge.
I give Gates credit for wanting to devote more time to his charitable activities.
That said, I think it is time to sell off the rest of my shares, since the man who gave the world Lotus Notes is now the Chief Software Architect at Microsoft. Sorry Ray, you are a good guy, but I cant forgive you for Notes, my man.
The EPA began taking air pollution measurements in 1969. Since they began taking readings, there has never been a year to date where the air did not measure cleaner then the year before.
The only thing that is warming again, is Al Gore's Presidential ambitions. He says he's not running, but come on, he also said a few other things of note that would cause me to doubt him.
Blue Chips, DirecTV, and now Wi-Fi? What next?

How about turning one of the rear restrooms into a shower; so stinky in the middle seat wont kill my Thinkpad with his stench alone?
How about a mini-tasor gun in my armrest for the toddler behind me who keeps kicking my seat? And a fullsize tasor for his mother for being a stupid bitch?
How about a ceiling mounted electric cattle prod for the dude with the overstuffed backpacks that he shoved into the overhead, crushing my leather jacket?
If JetBlue could give me those things, and keep the blue potato chips coming until I say stop, I'll never fly another domestic carrier.
Wish I had mod points for you, because you are dead right.
Even though I use Windows on a daily basis, and even used to work for Microsoft, I have to agree with what you said about Windows making people consider computers to be fragile. I hadnt thought about it in those terms, but when I read your post, I thought about the hundreds of users that I have encountered over the years who are literally afraid that their computer will turn on them at any second if they strike the wrong key, and in one case, a person who was afraid of using the right mouse button, because their friend (mac owner) told them that it was the addition of the right mouse button that made Windows unstable, and that it should never be used.
Being a Windows user from 3.0 on, gives one the feeling somewhat akin to being a veteran of some inter-global man vs. machine war, from which there are many survivors but all with major injuries. As the cursor moves closer to the Outlook icon, the hand trembles, wondering if this is the day that Outlook decides to strike back!
Where else are there 3 major airports within 50 miles of each other with a Bay between them? Where else are can you find enough land to support the millions of poorer people who live on the edges of the valley and take all the supporting jobs that the rich dont have to do, but are willing to pay someone else to do? Decent Mass-transit, Two major Colleges, a better freeway system then most places, AND better then average weather?
In short, Silicon Valley has everything good about all the other technical centers, but little of the bad. You dont have the weather issues, the traffic issues (at least not as bad as in Seattle/Redmond/Bellevue, and you dont have a population afraid to display conspicuous wealth and success in their purchases and activities.
In the Valley, there is a general assumption that with luck, education and a work ethic, it is possible to get rich relatively quick. In Seattle and other areas, if you dont work for some place like Microsoft (of late 80s-to late 90s) it is assumed that fast wealth is beyond your reach by a large part of the populi.
In the Valley, money and work = competition and lifestyle.
"Oh its not working? Ok, lets start by REMOVING DEVICE DRIVERS!"
I suspect there are going to be a flood of articles about Vista from idiots who have no business in technology to begin with. Vista is going to know how it feels for Linux to continually get a bad rap because some idiot with nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon decides to play geek, and try to load up an OS without a single clue of the challenges and obstacles in his way.
And who puts a beta OS of ANYTHING on a LAPTOP to begin with? Especially one of the former THINKPAD variety, which require so many proprietary drivers you cant build up one of those things without hooking up an artery and mainlining device drivers through multiple reboots.
I mean, when you consider what the price of oil is going to be this winter, my X-Box 360 can double as a space heater! Where else can I get that kind of bargain from my gaming gear. Is Sony going to heat my home while I play? NO!
As a former Microsoftie, every Vista article is like a knife in my side. This kind of shit could not happen 10-15 years ago. Problems were dealt with INTERNALLY, issues were managed and the company stayed focused. I dont know what happened, but this is the worst project management since MS-BOB.
I dont think they will ship the fucker. Who wants it? I get the betas, and all they give me is a big SO WHAT? There is nothing cool or compelling, no matter how PRETTY it is. Where the FUCK did all the features go?
Vista is a fucking SERVICE PACK, to add another GUI to WIN32. So what? I think there are still a few people there who remember how it used to be, and the next announcement wont be another delay, its going to be that they have knifed that bitch, and they are starting over.
And they will be right to do it. KNIFE THAT BABY, BILL!!!
Dont cut back on my Pro Club membership, keep that free stuff coming, baby!
More valets, damn it! Who wants to stand outside in the rain for more than 30 seconds to get across the campus? They should be LINED UP WAITING FOR ME! My dry cleaning was late last week, forcing me to hang around until 5:03pm! This cant happen! If I dont use my air-miles, you should BUY THEM FROM ME! My corporate AMEX is starting to fade from excessive usage, so you'll be taking care of that, wont you babe? Platinum anyone? I'm getting a new Porsche next month, so what about that plan to widen the parking spaces to cut down on dings? And when the hell is someone going to come by and cut down that tree to improve my view of Lake Bill? I'm telling you, it is getting harder and harder to focus on my hunk of Vista under these conditions. I might have to seek counseling!
Thanks to his ham-fisted handling of Java, McNeely cleared a path for.NET and C#.
I can just see the man celebrating after their court victory; "Ha! we made Microsoft remove Java from their desktops! We win! We win! We...uh.....uh.......what did we just do? I mean,.....we......won......right?"
Good point, but in most of these Web 2.0 sites, isnt the javascript kinda the whole point?
Maybe I could degrade my sites to a redirect popup that says: "You have 30 seconds to enable Javascript in your browser, before a full screen popup opens with an image of horrible gay porn."
Andressen, is that you?

Fine, nobody does that either.
COLLABERATION
Drive a stake through its heart! NOBODY COLLABERATES except the French Fry dude and the Burger flipper!

If the company is using MS CRM, odds are strong that those requests are STILL going to be routed through Exchange.
LOL! You dont really believe that, do you? Have you ever heard of "opportunity funds"?
Have they forgotten how effective BRIBING people can be?
Have all the creative people left the company?
Will someone PLEASE put Ballmer back in charge of Sales?

I run two 7800GTX cards to run 3 Viewsonic VP201b 20" displays and one 30" HDTV.
