  1. Lodoss War? on D&D Movie on The Way · · Score: 1

Ever seen the Record of Lodoss War series. It's almost straight D&D right down to the racial hatreds. The only change is in the setting. It's anime, but i still consider it to be a movie.

  2. Re:Autism not consistent with our communications on L.A. Times Columnist Says Geek-Autism is a Good Thing · · Score: 1

From what i read on the article, it seems autistic people would be able to communicate better on IRC, Slashdot, etc. because there are none of the social cues to pick up on, it's straight english and the occasional ALL CAPS YELLING. Nothing for an autistic geek to miss.

When i read the first story about the on slashdot a couple of weeks ago my first thought was "Oh damn, I'm autistic"

Man, I must of went to a good school. I was a straight C average underachiever, but was always put in the gifted classes just because my teachers knew I was smart. I particularly remember sitting in an advanced math class reading "The Illiad" and not having my teacher bother me. My only problem was teachers getting mad at me for not doing homework, they couldn't understand that I learned it all in class and didn't feel the need to practice it at home.

I remmember when the schools were considering doing away with the 9 month school year and going to 4 3 months semesters throughout the year. The point was to keep students from forgeting everyhting over the summer. I'm not saying it's a good idea but i'd have been a whole lot happier if we didn't just do review the first 6 months of school.

Most of this is offtopic, sorry I felt like a good rant

After reading what you'v all said it sounds to me like what we really need is an 8 1/2 x 11 in PalmPilot. It wouldn't solve the issues with comparing two pieces of paper that are layed out on your desk, but at least you could read a book or some source code it the bathroom. Sure it won't fit in your shirt pocket but neither will your notepad(unless you have one of those tiny ones, and then a palmpilot should work just fine).

Secondly, PDF's are completly Evil(TM). I'd much rather have an ASCII text file than a pdf, there is just no comfortable way to read one on a computer screen. They're probably the only thing that i print out on a regular basis.

Howard Stern's comment's were taken completly out of context by the rest of the media. He simply said that if they had done that at least he could see some motive behind the crime. He was just as shocked by this as everyone else, and was also at a loss to explain it.

Yea, SJ goes to alot of conventions. I bought my copy of the Principa Discordia from him at marcon(www.marcon.org). He's a hell of a nice guy, when they tried to charge tax on the book, i told him i didn't belive in the government, so i didn't have to pay the tax, he let me. Sadly though later that day at the marcon dance i got a picture of him doing the Macarena.

Alot of people are trashing the FBI for their methods of catching perverts like this. It however is nothing new.

If you walk up to an undercover cop and try to pay for sex, you'll get arrested for soliciting a prostitute.

This isn't any different, the guy was blatantly solicting sex with a minor, and in my personal flamebait opinion should be put to death slowly and painfully.

  8. Re:this should be a poll on Why geek geniuses may lack social graces · · Score: 1

Actually chatting on the net could be done fairly well by an autistic person. There aren't any of the little 'social cues' for them to interpret. You don't have to look anyone in the eye, and if you nervously tap your foot noone will notice. All of the communication is done through the written communication, which is done very well by an autistic person.

  13. Re:Delivering for the mainstream on Linux and the New Computing Order · · Score: 1

Most of that is simply because Linux isn't mainstream...yet. Not even the Open Source community can bother to write drivers for every piece of hardware out there(well i suppose we could, but who'd want to?). Anyone who's going to take the time to write a stable driver is going to do for a good device that they really love. That's why we have support for Voodoo 1,2, & 3 and TNT 1 & 2. Because it's good hardware. If your S3 Virge chipset isn't supported it's cause nobody liked it enough to put out a driver for it. Drivers for sub par hardware will always have to be written by the manufacturer, and they'll only do it when the OS is mainstream.

*Except in rare circumstances that i'm sure someone will bring up.*

You're absolutley right. Problem is we don't like to think about that, luckily however neither does MS. For MS to do that sucessfully they would need to drop windows soon so the mainstream would move to linux, which is taking an awfully big risk. If they wait till the mainstream is already moving to linux then people will remember how shafted they were with previous MS products and stay with something else.
