  1. Re:The Worst. on What Was Your Worst Computer Accident? · · Score: 1
Never managed to do that on a 10Base-T before, but one day my mate and I were installing a phone line into my room, I had already connected the line but I realized I needed to strip a bit more of the end to attach the jack--and I had lost my wire strippers. (Can you see where this is going? :P)

So, of course, I'm thinking "I really don't want to disconnect the line again, ah, what the heck there isn't that much voltage in the line I'll get a few small shocks if I use my teeth but thats it".

Unfortunatly, I forgot that the level increases somewhat if, say, there's an incomming phone call.

It definatly wasn't the most glorious moment of my life.

My major issue is that most of my users are either incapable of actually performing the step by step guide I give them, or are unable to comprehend certain parts of it. Thus they feel they have been shortchanged when in fact they have been given all the help it is possible to provide without getting a scratchy voice.

  9. Some online games almost have a system on To Kill An Avatar · · Score: 2, Informative
I used to MUD every now and then (years ago) and reading this article kind of reminded why I stoped. When the MUD was still relitivly small player-wise it was easy to police things. Usually the wizards would do most of their work, except in a situation where a person pk-ed another person who had an anti-pk (they shouldn't be attacked nor were they to attack anyone else) flag set, which then allowed everyone (pk or otherwise) to attack them free of penalty. A kind of hard system, esp if you were a low level, but it sort of balanced out, and you could always appeal to one of the wizards for help.

The problem with these new MMRPGs is their sheer size, there is no really easy way for the few 'wizards' to police them, and having players police themselfs can lead to gang type situations. As well, even if you were to use players as police officers, there is no means to protect against police corruption. The problem with some of these games is they end up almost too 'read world' in many ways.

Actually, I'm inclined to argue that xBASIC is a good starting language for people to learn. Unless you want to spend the rest of your natural born life programming Microsoft I'd stear people away from VB, and while QBASIC does teach programming concepts it doesn't exactly help develop good style and some concepts are just backward when we look at today's programming needs.

I think that Python would be a better starting language, or barring that Pascal. Both of them were sort of designed to teach programming, and Python is also OO which (to my eternal regret) seems to be here to stay.

  11. A Recent Failure... on Stories of Open Source Failures? · · Score: 3, Interesting
I can think of one failure I had recently trying to get the evangelical work done for OSS.

At my work we are currently running a Win2k network. A piece of software we have to run over the network is this thing called âoeThe Agency Managerâ which is a closed-source buggy-assed piece of software. We toyed around with the idea of switching to a Linux (my bossâ(TM) suggestion) or BSD (my suggestion) network, but our use of T.A.M. wouldnâ(TM)t allow us. We also fooled around with WINE for a bit, and another agency which uses the same software has already done that and found that it still provides performance benefits. Unfortunately we were informed by the makers of T.A.M. that they only offer support for Win2k or WinNT networks, not *nix nor Novell. Because the software was so buggy we had no choice but to continue with Win2k.

I know that at this point some of you are doubtlessly thinking âoeWhy the hell didnâ(TM)t you just find/make an Open Source alternative to T.A.M.â and I can tell you the answer is the other big failure in the Open Source model. T.A.M. is the paramount software piece for the insurance industry; however, it is not glamorous in the least. Iâ(TM)ve found that most Open Source developers would rather program a new web browser, or tool around with encryption, that make a bloated database front-end/accounting software and conversion tools from T.A.M.â(TM)s obscure data format (a db3 variant). As Open Source developers we would rather do something interesting then something needed because we are doing the work for free. This is probably (IMO) the biggest failure with the Open Source model.
