Ok, as I stated in my previous post, it is nothing but my opinion, but here it goes.
I can install debian with very few packages and then install the "services" I want running on the box easilly with apt-get. I can't do that as easy on Mandrake or Red Hat. For example, even if you don't select it, at least on X Server gets installed.
As to why I prefer Red Hat or Mandrake on a desktop (I'm not saying that Debian it's not GOOD on the desktop) You can get more recent software "out of the box" with Red Hat or Mandrake. You can add apt repositories to debian, but that is something I'd rather not do. Also, if I use apt-get to fetch KDE 3.1 or similar it can be quite slow, considering that where I live broadband is not easy to get (I just got 128Kb cable and some of my friends drool over it) Server aplications tend to be smaller than desktop apps. And if where I'm installing there's only dialup access, apt-get is not viable. Also, most people I have installed desktops for, don't want to be upgrading constantly, which kind of defeats the purpose and beuty of apt-get.
And that's it!!! If anyone has a different opinnion, I'll really like to read it.
I can't believe someone modded this as a troll. Debian is GOOD, really GOOD, but not for everything. I still have a Mandrake 7.2 running GREAT serving several remote desktops. If we only need Debian, then why is Slashdot running a story on (ohh the horror) another distro?? Linux is about choice, let's keep it that way. For me, Debian is good for servers, but for desktops RedHat or Mandrake is a better choice. But that is nothing but my opinion.
I had an experience like this, when I was in High School, during a trip to the beach with my classmates.. I remember to be able to hear color green. And the weirdest thing is that it sounded just like green. If I covered it, or looked elsewhere, the sound stopped. And it made complete sense, at least at the moment. I never knew it had a name. By the way, I wasn't doing any kind of hard drugs, in case you might wonder about it, but I was drinking constatly (not too much either) for several days. I haven't RTFA yet, but it sounds really interesting.

I've been considering buying an iBook for while. The only drawback that I see is that I might need to hook to a router or switch once in a while, but the iBook doesn't have serial ports. Is there a USB->RS232 adapter or something similar? For an Apple computer? This is a particular issue against legacy free computers, specially for IT people.
...since I have never worked on Main Frames and don't have an idea how complex they are. But I think most people like easy interfaces, and that's where they focus, and that's where there is oversupply of labor. Find something hard, and not very popular, and learn it well. You'll earn well, have close to zero competition, and be happy. I learned Novell Netware, and at the begining it was HARD, much harder than Linux. If you didn't know how to do something, there was nowhere to point and click to see if it works. But after a couple of nights playing with it, and asking people who worked with Netware in the past (including my mother) I began to get the hang of it. And I'm happy I did. I have few clients, but they pay well, and since they trust me, *I* will be migrating them to other plataforms if they so choose. If I could, and they pay well, I would be learning to work with mainframes
Ok, maybe the original post sounded a bit too over the top for me. I personally think "techie" vacations are not as ejoyable as "unplugged" ones. If you need to keep up with work, that's pretty much reasonable.
Anyway, have a nice trip and enjoy!!!!
It seems that a lot of people are saying that it's good that the terrorist was caught, but that the goverment should be able to spy like that on us? Shouldn't the government be able to spy on terrorists? If you have dealings with a terrorist (either on purpose or by mistake) you can get caught by a LOT of other means, and then you'll have a bunch of things to explain.
Some weeks ago, the store that my parents own was robbed. They put a gun to my father and mother. They even put a gun to my 4 year old sister. Luckily no one was hurt. They also stole my father's cell phone, and even answered when we called. Do you think that I would be happy to be "tracked" by my phone's location, just so those assholes could have been caught? I sure will.
You are right, this is redundant, so you should be modded as redundant? You want choice? There's your choice, you can either buy it or not. This is a free market, they sell (if they want) and you buy (if you want) I'm a big fan of Matrix, even though I didn't watch it on the movies, but would most likely watch the new ones on the movies. That means that, at least for me, their product is GOOD. If they release 3 movies with pretty much the same script (like with "The Crow") they won't be seeing me again in the movies. Simple.
Look, if you want to enjoy your trip, leave all your gear home. I enjoy technology, but it has to have limits. Shortly before year's end I took a trip with my friends to the beach. There was no cell reception, and it was great!!! I work as a freelance sysadmin/computer geek for hire, and generally have to stay in touch. I limited myself to check my voice mail a couple of times. In the only voicemail I got from a client, he was just calling to wish me a happy new year. Hell didn't break loose while I was "out of touch." I love techonoly (I currently have 5 computers setup in my room, but should drop to 3/2 soon) but there are times when everyone needs to unplug (or get away from wi-fi access or whatever) Do you really think you need to be hooked up? I'm pretty sure you don't, try it and you'll see.

Maybe I'm too stupid to use AD, but I've found it pretty much useless, irksome, and ilogical. I have worked with NDS (yes, Novell, say whatever you want) and it was actually useful, simplifing the management of large networks (1500+ users), rather than making it worse like AD. Windows 2000 is way better than older versions, but is still years behind in all of the areas you mentioned (except maybe stability) That's my opinion anyway.
The site was slashdotted with less than 4 comments, and the error page didn't even have the MIME Type header set right.
Are you goin to trust these guys with something that effectively could kill you ?? Good luck guys. The idea sounds very neat, specially considering that the whole PS could be airtight and therefore collect much less dust.
I've seen a setup where they took a Creative Labs Infra CD-ROM drive (It includes a remote control) It was hooked to a 12V supply and they took the digital audio out and they plugged it directly into a sound receiver. I don't remembrer more details, sorry.
1) Non intrusive or tricky (unlike Presion Time Ads) 2) Very well targeted.
For example, if I'm surfing a music band's website, and there is a banner for online music retailer, that will take me directly to a list that band's albums, that's a good banner. Even if I don't click on it, I will not whine about it beign there. This is probably a very clear cut case, but there are many where banner ads can be compelling and complementary to the website's content. Unfortunatly, less 1% are well thought probably, and since very few people click on them, they are not compeling (monetary wise) to website operators.
Of course, as with mostly everything in the Internet, it is easier to mass abuse rather than be creative, thoughtfull, or decent.
I can see some of your irony or wit or whatever, but have you ever considered what it takes to start a company?
I did, I have my own company, I'm my own CEO, my own middle management, my own footman. I have had to make to decision to fire about 10 diferent persons in my life (I'm 22 right now) and it wasn't easy, or fun. It felt bad, but it was necesary. I work all day consulting on networking and general computer maintance, and I code at night. I have some big clients (at least for the country I live in) including a K12 School that has the largest IT infrastructure in the country (400+ computers). Am I making a shitload of money?? Absolutly not. But I'm making a bit less as I would if I had been employed in an avarege job. However, I know that I can continue to climb as I become more experienced, and I know that one of my projects can give me a big break, but if not, I can continue to survive. Is it hard?? Yes, probably harder than a normal job, but I think it would be worth it in the long run.
Don't underestimate the position of a CEO, if you haven't had a chance to walk in thier shoes. Some are like the ones you describe, but they are few and far apart.
I live in a Central America country (Costa Rica) and even though it is somewhat diferent (a little better economically and socially, no army, etc.) I have to say that most politicians in such countries are just a bunch of jerks. Most of the laws (and we have lots more than other countries) are plain stupid, some contradictory, and most are not enforced. Why would such a law make it through a Congress? Well..., to show people that they are doing something to control violence, even if it is useless. The violent nature of the people come from years of civil war, a very militaristic system, whole villages laid with mine fields, not from video games. Video games do have some penetration, it is VERY common to have arcades where you can rent a Playstation for less than $1/hour, but the violence they see in games is just what they see on the news or on the street. Will it be enforced? not likely.
I'm not an expert, but as far as I know, the problem is mostly with CDMA technology. With CDMA it is always possible to add one more call in a particular spectrum. However, the more calls, the more dificult it is to pick up a clean signal, and the more often you get dropped calls. With TDMA (and GSM which is based on TDMA) it is not possible to go over a fixed amount of calls on a particular section of the spectrum.
I live in Costa Rica, Central America and our phone company (govt) sucks on everything but cell phone coverage. I think this is because they use TDMA and can't abuse their network like they could with CDMA.
Hey... We're talking important stuff here, like e-mail and P2P networks, not silly ICBM toys
Now getting into a more serious attitude, the DOD has always done things in a way which is completly different from Corporate America, and Consumer America, where 2.0 is much better than 1.5, because it has more features, nicer GFX, whatever. Ohh, and 8.0 is much better, even if there was never a version 7.0, or 6.0, or 5.0, etc.
Do you guys think that the Marketing people as Microsoft were thinking about security when they gave the 8.0 number to the new MSN?? Unfortunatly, this is a marketing world, and the best marketing almost always wins. And if the loose, the marketing people try to make it look like they won anyway !!
We had a similar, but much worse case a couple of years ago. We bought some cases that came with power supplies branded CommPlus. After about 2-6 months the power supplies would die in a really fierry death (sparks, high temparature, whatever)

I remember a few years ago (1997?) that there was a lot of talk about this, because it carried an atomic fuel cell, and it was sopossed to fly by the Earth in some years to gain speed due to the Earth's gravity.
