I understand the concerns of other nations about their having a say in the way the Internet as we know today is going to shape into.

Why? If China and other repressive countries want a locked-down internet, they can build their own. It's not like America threatened to go to war if they didn't hook up.

I'd be more interested in knowing why some corporate SUS (Software Update Services, like an in-house Windows Update) subscribers were reporting to NTBugTraq today that they got about a DOZEN updated patches last night!

I wouldn't be surprised if this was because the monthly schedule for SUS is out of sync with the main release schedule.

I run a SUS via SMS system, and last month's definition file for it didn't include MS03-051 (which I think is the Frontpage extensions patch). I believe this was because the definition file was released a few days before the monthly patch release. If that was the case, it would make sense for MS03-051 (and other patches) to be available in the December definition file.

I don't know about that. I heard the same thing five years ago about what were the olden days then.

There have always been a ton of games that really aren't very good, and they've always been about US$50 (adjusted for inflation) as long as I've been playing, which is about fifteen years now.

It's always easier to remember the good parts of the past without the bad ones, and there are a lot of great games being made just like there have always been.

Nothing is safe. If it doesn't allow for multiplayer or MMO, it's not marketable.

I guess KOTOR, the Legacy of Kain series, Eternal Darkness, every Metroid game, Whiplash, and BloodRayne 2 don't count, eh? And those are just the ones I've actually played or am looking forward to.

While the multiplayer/MMO market is sizeable, I think that companies who bet on it to the detriment of all single-player games are going to lose in a big way.

There are too many types of game that don't lend themselves to anything other than single-player. The online experience so far also seems to be incredibly shallow, even if it is time consuming (e.g. Everquest).

A lot of people (including myself) are interested in playing through a story-based scenario at our own pace, not hunting up loot and levelling for 8 hours a day or playing FPS/RTS games on the same maps over and over.

I didn't say anything about the RIAA. However, as much as people like to slam them, their labels do have a lot of good musicians: Evanescence the only currently popular band I actually like, and they're on an RIAA label. So were Nirvana, who I was a huge fan of back in the day.

In any case, this is a diversion from the post I was responding to, which was a load of the usual "I'm not a musician, but I know that REAL musicians don't care about getting paid" horseshit.

Judging by current amateur PS2 emulators, which barely scrape 5 FPS in the BIOS on the latest hardware, I consider it unlikely that even Sony managed to produce a software emulator for the PS2 which ran at anything approaching a usable speed on the hardware which was available back when the thing was released.

That's true, but my interest isn't really playing PS2 or PSP games at full speed on my PC. It would be really cool to have one that ran at all and let you use debugging functions though. I like to make cheat device codes when I have time, and being able to watch the program as it runs would let me do a lot more.

It'd be interesting to see if Nintendo can port that technology to their current systems sold here in the US. Being able to download a video game onto a blank cartridge for playing might just get me back into gaming. The pricing for the games are outstanding, I'd definately pay $6.00 for a game. These current prices of $40.00+ for just one game though is a definate turn off.

If you want to play 5-10 year old games, why not just buy them used on eBay for the same price?

A modern console game isn't going to fit on a reasonably-priced flash card. Neither will games for Sony's new Handheld. The GBA and cellphone games are about it.

As for the price, the reason they can sell them so cheaply in China is that they turned their profit on those games when they were originally released. Western and Japanese buyers from 5-10 years ago were effectively subsidizing their low price release in China now.

My understanding is that unless you take legal action, you don't get your money back in a case like this. It's not like the automatic protection you get when you use a credit card. If you can't track down the person that stole your money, how can you take action against them?
