Our understanding of the world is far too small to be critiszing nature works and it's language. When humanity can create a WORKING system thats 1/1000th as complex as the natural world is when we can even start to make arrogant statements such as this. Today is not yet that day.

It was just 6 guys playing some of the most amazingly complex music ever devised. They played hours on end if amazingly original improvised and writen pieces of music.

The pop bands you are refering to (like say Britney Spears) make most of they're money through albums, and the shows are mearly marketing tools for the CD's. Music is and always has been ment to be enjoyed life. Music recording has only been around for less than a century, yet music has been around for centuries.

I hear the argument that the way that Truck Drivers earn their living is mainly through hauling loads. But what of motorcyclist truckers who want to haul on their bikes (and there are some)? And there's certainly cases where a trucker takes a year off from trucking in between loads (Old Gus, for example). Are we now saying that truckers MUST haul loads in order to make money? What if they choose not to? Should they still not be able to make a living based on the places they drive to? It's sort of like if authors were forced to give speaking tours in support of their freely-given-away books.

I guess it's starting to look like truckers are going to be FORCED to haul loads to earn a living, and I think that the public may miss out on some great driving that will never be done because truckers who only ride motorcycles.

Humor aside, there is only one reality in this world and that is change. Whether it's right or not the job descriptions of people change with time, plenty of occupations, such as typewriter repair people are obsolete. Musicians simply have to change, and spending a few days in a recording studio isn't good enough anymore. Times change, and so will musicians.

  12. Re:Hmmm Tour? on Time to Face the Music · · Score: 1

The trouble is, the grateful dead or phish or any jam band for that matter has hundreds of songs in their repertouir, so every concert is different, and therefore they get a following.

Britney Spears, or any of the other popular bands today have 20-30 songs they regularly reherse and play them exactly the same every time; so one Britney Spears concert is exactly the same as another.

With Phish or the Grateful dead, every concert was totally different, so it was worth seeing every show on a tour. Unfortuanatly, the same cannot be said about the bands that the labels make the big bucks on; IE the flavor of the week bands.

  20. Re:Because for us it would be a derogatory label on Are Programmers Engineers? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Programming is a unique discipline on the intersection between engineering, art, science and mathematics. It requires much greater deal of creativity and mental dexterity in entirely novel situations than mere engineering.

I honestly hope the above is just ignorance, and not thick headed stupidity.

Engineering has far more to do with science, art and mathematics than computer programming does.

    Science
The theory and science behind thermodynamics, as well as material mechanics was almost entirely deveopled by engineers. The great men who developed most of the theories of modern thermodynamics such as Carnot, Stephenson and Otto were all engineers. Engineering not only applies science, it has created and developed entirely new disciples of science.

    Mathematics
The theories of finite element analysis, a complex mathematical analysis technique which can be applies to countless physical problems was developed by engineers; not mathematitians. As well, many theories of 3d geometry and modeling were developed by engineers.

    Art
Engineers have created great works of art, atleast as much as programmers do. Look at the golden gate bridge, or the Concorde, or the film projector. If this isn't art, what is?

    Creativity
Look, why don't you sit down and try to solve a simple mechanical or electrical problem without creativity. Designing a simple circuit, mechanisim or structure to acomplish a simple task often requires great creativity and inginuity. If you don't belive me, open an automatic transmission, and tell me theres no creativity involved there.

I think that covers everything. I have no doubt that computer science or engineering involves these aspects as well. Programming on the other hand is analogous to welding, you just put other people ideas into existance.

  24. Bad for the Environment? on Building a Better Motorized Bicycle · · Score: 4, Insightful

Some may think that a super efficient small engine is a good thing. I argue that point.

Although a small 2-stroke may put out much less greenhouse gas than a car or motorcycle, a 2-stroke engine of any size is very damaging to the air quality. A 2-stroke engine (such as the one on this bike) must burn large amounts of oil, it's simply the way 2-strokes work. Therefore, a lot more soot, and other impurities are blown out the exhaust. This is the smelly blue smoke you always see out the back of scooters, motorboats, chainsaws and other devices with 2-stroke engines.

While this may be a more efficient form of transportation, if everyone who rides a bike road one of these our cities would be far more smoggy and smelly than they are today.
