Umm nooo, the community is what human beings have been creating for the past several million years. It is called society, and can range from a small family group to a nation the size of China.
Just because you appear to be a greedy self centered person don't assume that everybody else is.
Oh know, someone is trying to provide a service for the community without gouging the community, quick call the guys from Enron.
You know not everything is about making money (I know its shocking isn't it), from the sounds of it, these people have the right idea, invest in cheap broadband access for the community and the payback could very well be a much bigger and better educated community for the future.
You know what founded the US? It was justifiable anger at taxation without representation, thats what led to the American Revolution, not capitalism.
Oh and one other thing, any organisation that exploits third world labour - often under age - is an evil organisation in my books.
Umm firstly its well known that MS itself is a vine as you put it, the very first OS they came out with was bought from someone else not developed in house. They have a long history of ripping off others in the industry. They also have a history of trying to choke off other development through under-handed business tactics and standard stretching(if not breaking).
I can't really see how Linux will fall over if the other *nixes die out, are you saying that people will stop developing? I doubt that very much.
In regards to the Television stations editing the films, the TV stations actually have to get permission from the copyright holder to make the changes, if the copyright holder says its okay, they go ahead, if however they say no then they can't do it. Case in point, when a commercial channel wanted to run Fawlty Towers, John Cleese demanded that they run the shows without ad breaks, in order to be able to run the shows the station agreed.
What this also leads into is parental responsibility. I would rather activily monitor what my child watches on TV, that way I can ensure that he is not watching something that I consider unsuitable for his age. In some respects this is just another step in the move away from personal responsibility.
Okay lets take a movie like Saving Private Ryan or Schindlers List and take out the naughty violence, oops you have just rendered to great films complete crap. Sure for some movies the violence is completely over the top, but for others it is an integral part of the movie.
I think there is something your missing here. In order for the consoles to do what they are doing - taking games away from the PC they are having to become PCs themselves. Look at the X-Box, basically it is just a cut down PC. When you think about it we may not see the kind of split that you envisage, instead what may happen is a convergance of the two platforms, so that what you end up with is not just a console but also a complete entertainment unit based on a PC like architechture.
Umm I have to disagree with you there, but IMHO real games play much better on the PC. None of the "Cute Character of the week bouncing around" bullshit but games like Quake, UT, MOA and all of the RTS all lend themselves to PC play over console.
For a start you have way more options when it comes to controls, instead of being stuck with some cruddy little control you get the whole keyboard + mouse to work with, I can tell you after having played both the PS2 version of MOA and the PC version I know which one I prefer.
Im not disagreeing with you blindly I am just stating a fact. Of the articles you linked to one was referencing out of date information, two were blindingly biased towards the pro gun lobby and the last one was written by two economists, people who can't agree on how to run an economy let alone proper crime policy.
You the funny thing is we banned guns to reduce crimes with guns and you know what it worked. Crimes involving fire arms fell. The other crimes rose and fell as well. Funny that, happens every year and given the current uncertain economic climate and political climate I would not be surprised if crime was up last year either. We removed one aspect of crime however we still need to tackle other aspects such as economic in-equality, what we want our justice system to do and so on.
According to the premise of the article, in a percieved sense, VHS was better than Beta. Yeah so what? It doesn't stop Beta being a better format in a very real sense. Neither does it stop a Lintel platform being better in a real sense than Wintel
Oooh look you use links, when I first saw them I thought maybe hes using unbiased sources to put forward his point of view but nope, should have known better.
So far we have a link to the "Kentucky Coalition to Carry Concealed"(weapons I assume). The MCSM which looks strangly like a militia under cover as a group of "Concerned Citizens" and an article by two economists? Oh and article which in itself is over a year old and uses a report which uses data from 1995.
I love this country *COUGH* (I've said this a million times now, but is there ANYONE out there in the states with a spare basement for me to live in!?!)
Hey here's an idea, instead of running away, why don't you stick around and do something about it. You know the only reason we kept electing lawyers? Because they're the only ones standing. I get really sick of people pissing and moaning about our pollies(God bless their corrupted little heads) and then when asked to help make a difference, they suddenly remember they need the pubes curled or something equally important.
Yes we have a long standing dedication to our citizens not being shot in a drunken rampage by a bunch of rednecks/depressed teenagers/psychotic public servants/whatever the flavour is today.
Bringing it back on topic, I am still trying to understand why they didn't tell Warners to go and stick their Cease and Desist up their arse. The DMCA has no force here and nor should it. If they don't like it perhaps they should talk to mini Bush and try and get him to actually look at the concept of free trade, as opposed to everyone else open up your markets but we are going to tariff the shit out of your exports.
Can you imagine? Only maybe 5% of the world will have anything to do with it, the rest will mock americans for being behind the times but boy will it look good.
Mind you Senators will now come in a wide range of cutting edge colours.
I made the Pauline Hanson comment to highlight the irrational ideas that the LibZ seem to be propounding. Apart from anything else, they seem to have no understanding of the human animal beyond greed is good.
I'll say it one last time, human beings need a society, and society needs a government, government needs money, however human beings being contrary creatures want something for nothing, hence the need for compulsory taxation. What you seem to advocating is the "let some one else pay for it" method of government. It doesn't work.
All I can say is that Im glad the LibZ have about as much chance of getting into power as I do of dancing a jig on the surface of the sun.
Oh and one last thing, you still haven't answered me, without compulsory taxation how is the governement going to pay for even the 'core' services?
I give up, I thought reasoned discussion would work but nope, not a chance. I've finished looking through the libz web site and all I can say is, lay off the sheep dip. Your party compares Education and Teachers to Rugby Coaches, advocates the complete removal of all environmental protection and declares that Civil War is just around the corner in NZ.
Australia had Pauline Hanson, and it looks like NZ is stuck with the LibertariaNZ.
It is not theft, it is part of the compact you make with society when you become a part of that society. Think of it as a contract between you and society, you agree to pay a certain amount each year and society agrees to provide you with certain services, including the aforementioned law and order, clean water and so on.
Tell me something, if taxation is not compulsory how is the government going to provide the services it does? By relying on the good will of the people? You have got to be kidding me.
You know redistribution of resources is what governments have been doing since the year dot. Its the nature of society. Without it you wouldn't have such luxuries as clean water, law and order or any of the other rights that you take for granted.
As to the moral equivelance I don't see that at all. Giving hand outs to multi-nationals with massive bank balances in no way is the same as helping people who cannot afford to put food on their table.
If you want to live in a governmentless society you're not going to find one. From the simplest family groups to the largest nations there is always someone telling the rest how to use the resources available.
Ummm there is a big difference between Corporate Welfare and Social Welfare.
Corporate Welfare is where Businesses, a lot of them in no need of a hand out get preferential treatment from the government of the day through tax breaks, relaxed laws and so on in exchange for what amounts to sweet fuck all.
Social Welfare is where the government supports those members of SOCIETY who are not able to support themselves for any number of reasons, usually in exchange what they get is someone who after they have gotten over their slump gets back into the workforce and starts contributing back to the society that helped him. Sometimes you do get people who take advantage of the system but that happens with every system.
I sure as hell would not want to live in a society that let those less fortunate fall by the wayside. Darwinism no longer applies to the human race and it definitly should not apply to our societies.
Yes the programmer might have realised that he/she could have written the same programme for Windows and then he/she will breathe a sigh of relief that they didn't. Not all developers are after the almighty dollar, nor are they willing to work with inferior tools.
The other point you seem to miss is the fact that OSS software can lead to job creation, need a custom module for Apache? Hire a developer, need a more secure version of Sendmail? Hire a developer. The code is there for anyone to use, as opposed to waiting for the proprietry code to be updated and even then there is no garauntee that the new version will meet your needs.
Again you are not one of those I am targetting with my comments. You obviously use your 4 wheel drive for work, so you need the capabilities it provides, however what I don't like is the status seekers who never drive near the country side. You see them around where I live near the new estates, driven by people who would shudder at the thought of taking their new toy into the bush just in case it got dirty. Basically for these people its a big, expensive, polluting penis extension. For those that need them 4 wheel drives are great, for the mid-life crisis crowd and the yuppies they are a status symbol.

Now imagine combining Arnold Schwazneggar and the Crocodile Hunter.

Does this mean we'll be able to get generic cartridges? Or will we be able to select different cartridges for what we want?
Mind you this does mean they can combine the "Get Larger Genitalia" and "Cheap Ink" spam mails now.
Can you imagine? Only maybe 5% of the world will have anything to do with it, the rest will mock americans for being behind the times but boy will it look good.

You think you've got problems, at least you don't have Deputy John as your PM.
Ahh the joys of the Westminster system, we run the same system down here in Australia. Mind you its got to be better than some other systems.
