  1. Re:Who needs Linux when you have OSX? on The GPL Impedes Linux More Than It Helps? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Because OSX isn't for everyone. I use it everyday at work, but when I get home I much prefer using kde on my linux box. I can configure it pretty much any way I want it and in my opinion most of the software is better. I prefer Amarok to iTunes, digikam to iPhoto, gaim to adium and so on.

OSX looks pretty and does work well (especially expose), but I have my desktop at home set up exactly how I want it, where as with OSX I'm always conforming to their way of doing things.

Courage helps in a lot of cases... my fiance hates it when I touch her laptop because I almost always break something (it's one of those pretty little white iBooks), because I start clicking on anything I can, opening up terminals and killing random processes and such... sometimes just to be a jerk, other times because I'm curious, or just trying something new out, but the reason she hates it is because I know that everything I do is fixable, and she doesn't. Once people learn that unless it's a hardware problem, a computer can be "fixed" (if it's actually broken), their "literacy" improves drastically.

Computer literacy problems aren't restricted to courage though. My brother has a computer science degree, but I am called weekly to help him with something. The latest has been helping him get his digital video camera working in linux with firewire... I don't have a video camera, nor have I ever used firewire, but apparently I'm the only one in my family able to use google and actually read up on how to do something. Sometimes people are just stupid... and luckily I'm pretty sure my brother doesn't read Slashdot.

According to your plan, the more brain cycles you provide the richer you get... Unfortunately, it will be the stupid people getting richer, the unimaginative dull minded people... and since money gets you power, it will be these people in power... controlling the robot armies. As we all know, stupid people leading large armies is not a good thing.

I'm hoping the day when humans have no jobs is soon. It's not like we're all going to go poor or something... If no one has a job then no one has money... but theoretically we also wouldn't have to pay for anything since robots would be doing all the work.

This probably makes the least amount of sense to me. Anytime I'm using a mac and need to find an application I have to go through a long list of mostly crap I don't need or will never use in the applications folder.

Windows has pretty much the exact same problem and setup... what is the difference between going through the application folder or a start menu...

On linux in both kde and gnome the applications are sorted into groups. "Internet", "Office", "Graphics" etc. etc... and it takes half the time to find any application you want to run. Also, oddly enough everything that I've installed on my system always shows up in these menus... I'm not sure why others have problems.

I may be mistaken, but with emerge you can mask any package you like. You can keep any package at any specific version you like, and if a package absolutely needs you to upgrade a package you have masked, then you simply unmask it and away you go. Complete control over what gets installed, and what versions get installed.
