    really disgusts me.

    reminds me of 'This Other Eden' by Ben Elton, the whole world eats gm-food and everything tastes the same. when the main character sees a 'real' potato it looks disgusting but tastes great, and the carrots look like a willie great food joke) ....
    but it all tastes sooooo good!

    i receive sms spam from my bank...
    and the mobile division of the national telco (Proximus) actually sent out spam to her users... there was a lot of gripe about it and so it stopped

    but now a new thing has arisen, SMS games, you send a message to a special number (eg 3220) and you're immedaitely subscribed to a daily question you can answer and wIN WIN (yeah right!)

    you can get football scores via sms as well... you pay for those.

    but as long as you didn't explicately asked to be sent these messages you wont be charged.

    i do however find that i spend much more time reading about spam on /. rather than nitpicking through my inbox which still only gets like one spam a week....

    i say we set www.riaa.com or www.mpaa.com as our homepage or at least visit a few times a day, just for laughs, they'll have to pay for banwidth, but it will not be used...

    i don't want to tempt fate, and i know i'm a few hours behind on the discussion, but i get like maybe one spam a week or less on my hotmail account. not even 'bulk' mail as hotmail calls it... is it because hotmail is that effective or because my mailadres isnt appeasing enough for spammers?

    what about 1U rack mounted servers, you culd hardly call them Big Boxes, its only when they team up that they can handle large loads.

    i think most people think ftp/www/mail/etc when they think servers, me too

    when i think mainframe/big boxes i think of VLS- Very Large Scale, analytic machines that do numbercrunching. not not to mention super computing

    wether it's *nix/win/etc, you'll always need big hardware to do big things, so that speed increase will probably have more to do with hardware upgrade and code optimization than it has to with the replacement system being linux.

    doesn't eBay have like local sites in europe?

    The Belgian eBay site for instance. most auctions orignate from within the country. Then again these site started up as independant sites but were bought, so they basically jsut carry the name. I thikn MSN India is probably a much visited portal. Anyone in India have a word on this?
