Also, NVidia's first generation FX cards (I'm not sure about the ones out now, I'm happy with my gf2mx400 64mb pci) had a fan under it that was large enough to take up the top pci slot.
a USB keychain drive would work great for that. Or a floppy disk with a compressed filesystem, but thats not as appealing to new users as those purdy usp keychain drives.
Court papers are based on laws, the same laws passwed by the congress people we elect based on what we know which we learn from sensationalistic media. These people are sued regardless, but whats wrong is that currently there are people that see them as bad people when they did nothing wrong.
But windows machines arnt nearly as useful. At best you get a crappy zombie bot, possibly a warez server. Breaking into a Linux box gives you much more power (raw sockets make for a much more fun zombie), and a better chance of finding something good.
"it's totally another to think you're above the law"
We, as citizens of the United States, ARE above the law. How do you think laws get overturned? The reason we have a second amendment is to keep the government in line. How it got watered down to 'only guns that could be used for hunting, even while the govt has much better' is purely an act of public stupidity, manipulation, and good ol' FUD.
Back when the laws outlawed alcohal, did we all just stop drinking and start writing our congressmen? Hell no. We faught back, and the law was repealed.
Shenmue has always been more like a movie. While I did enjoy it, it was mostly just storyline strung together by a few simple puzzles or timing games.

"As modern GUIs have very few of these primitives, they end up sending basically every pixel one by one. That's a lot slower than just telling X to draw a button here (or to draw a 2x2x3 rectangle here...)."
No, Its not technically any slower. Buy an NVIDIA card with proper drivers and you'll never notice any slowdown. I heard Matrox had good drivers to, but I've never tried. Telling GTK to tell GDK to tell X to draw a line does *NOT* have to be any slower than telling X to draw a line. It is still drawing the same line, so if everything is optimized to the point of transparency then you will not notice any abstraction layers.
Un*x is traditional. AT&T can't sue you for trademark infringement if you don't say the whole word.
*nix is much newer (circa mid-90s, rather than the late 80s Un*x started in) and is actually much less accurate. Un*x refers to Unix(tm), I've heard *nix refer to just about anything POSIX. Why don't more people refer to things by the standards they're actually judging Un*x-a-like systems?
"If I go to a store and pay cash, where is the money trail?" In the serial numbers on the money, logged when the atm spit it out (with a picture of you from the camera).
The point is you can listen to it without wasting disk space. Also turns you on to new music you otherwise wouldnt know about. I dont listen to traditional radio, nor do I watch mtv -- The only way I can learn about new music is streams and word of mouth.
Listening to a good stream has a much better flow to -- Random mp3s jump from song to song, but a good stream is setup more like a good radiostation, where songs flow together rather than jumping from an aggressive song to some slow ballad
here. Its been out for years now, iirc this was one of their first 'Shared Source' applications. the license is even more straight forward than the GPL.
Whoever provides connectivity to the ircd can sniff it to.(eg qwest, internap, cogent, yipes, etc)
On something as active as most public warez filled nets, it would probably take a decent amount of cpu, but the price of it isnt really much when you think about the price of sending out all the subpenas, all the time setting it up, lawyer fees, and all that. Making that money back is easy when you're sueing for $130K per copyright infringement, though.
" That and its a hell of alot easier to get songs off WinMX, Kazaa, etc.. than it is off IRC. "
Not for those in the know. On WinMX/Kazaa/etc you search only by filename, then slowly start downloading something that could end up being a 128kbps jstereo release of a different song that is mislabled. on IRC I can just ask if anyone has From_Zero-One_Nation_Under-2001-EGO from 04.07.2001 and one of them will FXP it off a site that always has more bandwidth than you do. now, if only something would come out that is worth downloading..
But the dcc request goes through the servers. The DCC is just a ctcp DCC SEND which as everyone knows is just another privmsg. I could hack out a shell script to show all dccs going on on my irc server in about a minute. So could your isp. So could your irc servers provider.
No, The proper way is to either use a proxy for everything (either an irc proxy(bnc) or just an http proxy that allows connect). Or connect from a shell, either way.
"# SCO's OS can only support 537gb per volume (so you couldn't have a 2tb raid). Linux supports terabyte sized disks, doesn't it?"
Not sure on the exact limits, but the largest I used it in was a 1.6tb array, first raid then LVM. (raid b0rked, not linux's fault.) iirc it was 8x200gig, and it ran great.
president@whitehouse.gov $ locate 'Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq' | grep -c '.*' 0
Whats the point of wastefully using grep when wc -l would work much more efficiently? While we're at it, maybe updatedb hasnt been ran recently, or maybe the WMDs are in/countries/Iraq/WMDs.
find would work much better.
So they could dedicate more time to the project and get things done much quicker. That way you can have the project done much sooner so that it can be implimented into whatever you want to use it for. Also gives you more control over direction of the project, depending on the coders.
Be careful. If you startx --:@ then you wont be able to get anything to open on your other running X servers. (I was trying to:2, held shift too long and the 4am-ness sunk in).
Yeah, I figured the TFC players would be just as upset, I recently watched the movie Open_Your_Mind.avi which shows some tfc trick jumps, and I had no idea TFC actually had real concs before switching to those puny things it uses now. (I'm originaly a qw/TF player).
You lost me at step 11, sigh. a girlfriend would make a much more enjoyable timesink, but theyre not nearly as easy to find.
Yeah, I feel the same way about those long standing bugs. In counterstrike (and I assume other halflife modes) if you duck under a low roof and have someone stand on top of you, then they jump and you stand you can push them through the roof. Not only did they not fix the bugs, they didnt even fix the low roofs in some maps where the bug is very exploitable. In my oppinion, anything that isnt fixed after this long is a feature.
I still hate valve with a passion, Even have a fake clan (just friends occasionaly wearing the tag to search for eachother) called 'fu@Valve!'. It sounds like you got out just in time -- before they introduced Valve AntiCheat. As any slashdot reader knows it is impossible to make something entirely secure, VAC is no exception. There are plenty of false negatives and false positives, No one in their right mind would put it into production with as bad a ratio as it has.. long story short, I know a few people who would never cheat, yet they're banned until some time in 2006 because of a bug in VAC.
The reason I said the thing about it being optional like that is if you've noticed, Valve likes to enforce their new changes. Most league gamers would much rather cs be more like beta7, or atleast 1.0, but instead you're stuck dealing with the features that most hate (delay in jumping, awp to the leg not killing, pistols being practicly worthless in air, etc).
You actually broke your halflife addiction? You should make a 12 step program so I can join-- Playing counterstrike is like being in an abusive relationship, you know you shouldnt but you keep coming back.
The screen tilted sideways with 0 health bug is well hidden, but i've seen it pop up in the mod Natural Selection before. A similar screentilt bug is in hltv still, if you're first person when they die you're stuck screen-tilted until you first person someone thats still alive. really annoying in the middle of watching a good lan match live.
