Agreed. However, it would be interesting to see a comparision of quality (preceived or measured by some metric) of only speach - something like a voice note on a PDA or cell phone. Does anyone know if such a test? My guess is that 64 kbps (or possibly lower) would be sufficient.
its probably less ironic than it first seems since the people who are responsible for the lawsuit and the people who wrote the article and the people who maintain the server are most likely not the same.
Consider how many negative Microsoft comments are made here on/. from Windows machines...thats what I consider ironic (but thats just me).
Why does everyone need to know how to build a webpage? Would it not be better to teach something that everyone truely must do - taxes for example. There really should be very few uses for the computers by any students, with the obvious expections of games, porn and word processing.

Look what generally happens to students that are allowed/encouraged to use calculators for math courses - they generally cannot perform simple computations with this "tool" (crutch). To make matters worse we having things like the TI92 and HP line of super-calculators that do symbolic integration and can solve differential equations. good luck learning with those. The best you can hope for is to learn how to use the calculator to solve preformed problems, which qualifies you for a great data entry postiion.

This immediately brought to mind one of the bosses from the game Final Fight, when he says "Oh, my car" right after you've smashed his car, and he couldn't sound much more disinterested, nevermind that his ride was beaten in with a lead pipe.
If I recall properly from my wasted youth, this was a special stage not a boss. The bosses you actually fought and didn't say too much afterward - this stage you just got to smash up the car with your trusty pipe/knee/elbow/etc.
here is one case the happened a few years back where part of a skull was found and the entire skull was rebuilt using rapid prototyping. In this one hoever they rebuilt the face using "low"-tech (clay I think) methods. Still pretty cool.
If I were to be given a photograph of you and a stack of 1000 photographs -- 999 other people and 1 (different) of you -- given enough time I could easily determine which of the 1000 is you. At worst, it would be possible to pick the 20 most "similar".
Does this mean they're going to take Handspring's OS...
I don't think they have to "take" it since the Handsprings run Palm OS - being that i'm not up to speed on the PDA market, it is my guess that the handspring aquisition is probably for hardware technology and marketshare.
Actaully it can't change instantaneously (in no time), which shouldn't matter since you can't sample this analog source infinitely fine anyway. Provided your sampling period is large enough the samples could change from lowest to highest in a single sample.
the chance of each one occuring is exactly the same
only if the numbers appearing in those three sample paths (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,11, 21, 23, 26, etc) are evenly distributed. i.e.
f(1)=f(2)=f(23)=...=A
where f(x) is the probability density function of some random variable X having the value x. If our sample set is {1, 2} and we have the ordered set [X1 X2] of random variables, our possible outcomes are of coarse:
[1 1]
[1 2]
[2 1]
[2 2]
now if f(1)=f(2)=.5 then yes all 4 are equally likely (with probability 1/4), but if f(1)=.25 and f(2)=.75 then
P([1 1]) =.125
P([2 2]) =.5625
which of coarse are not equal.
It seems like there would be a better choice than Java for the language when speed/efficiency is a must. Isn't the added overhead of the JVM going to decrease performance significanly?
Portability should be a mute point since the pages can be generated on the server, which could easily run an OS specific binary.
If it could somehow be a smart card that contains some biometric data on the rightful holder that must be matched to use the card then selling/giving/... could be slowed or stopped.
Naturally this information (i.e. fingerprint) could be used to identify who voted for whom, but if it was only used to verify that the voter has the right to use the card anonymity could be maintained.
Granted we would need everyone to willingly contribute some unique identifier, which is a whole other issue.
If it has TV out and digital audio out it could be nice. Nice if like paying for features that you don't need - how many people want to lug around the speakers and power for 7.1 audio for their "portable" device?
but as we all know, it all comes down to software.
Right you are, but the type of games that are playable on a portable are different from those on a standard console - The [relatively] small screen of most portables can make it difficult for many gammers to play high-action and/or immersion type games. The GBA for example is very well suited to RPG games, but I do not think I could enjoy playing a sports game (since the players would have to be very small) or a vice city type game (i just think it would be difficult to play at ~4"x4"). That said, if the PSP really has a 16x9 screen and is large enough, it could be awesome for many type of games.
The downside to the large screen of coarse is shortened playtime and a larger overall system - the GBA SP is so ultra-portable that its almost scarry.
Will be interesting to see though....hope the price is right (or at least reasonable)
In other words, they have subtracted $1 from a $3000 computer to make it seem cheaper, which is absolutely ridiculous.
I guess I fail to see how pricing something at $2999 vs $3000 is absolutely ridiculous. Maybe its just me, but when i'm looking at a $3000 system, a single dollar will not sway me one way or the other. Americans should be used to this... bottled soda and water are typically $0.99 and for some unknown (to the general public at least) reason, gas is sold with a price having 10ths of cents.
I find this to be very true when using my spiffy 28.8 modem - the 56 kbps just sounds choppy :)

print like
***Arnold*Schwarzenegger*** = 27 chars
***Grey*Davis************** = 27 chars
which is good until prince has a kid named "*"

which has of coarse been done here (and was in the story headline).
i think that the most interesting thing about the SCO issue is their stock price. Going from $0.78 to $11.00 (as of posting) is not too shabby.
Could be a good time to short SCO since the price will most likely plummet when this is all over (hopefully soon).
you could get emacs for windows and edit your code in that, just use the VB IDE to build and debug.
I think that you are looking for converges to rather than approaches. Things that "approach" infinity are divergent.
i know, i meant my post to mean that the 16x9 aspect ratio screen would be nice if it was large enough to make many types of games playable.
If it has TV out and digital audio out it could be nice. Nice if like paying for features that you don't need - how many people want to lug around the speakers and power for 7.1 audio for their "portable" device?

I believe it is the pages themselves, not Google, that this is an attempt to deliver.
