OK, let's go with your assumption that iPod sales will flatten after next year.
WTF does that have to do with them moving to Intel? While intel cpus might lower the cost to manufacture, do you really think it is going to lower by very much the cost to the consumer?
No, this is all about the laptops. Trusted Network Computing might be a factor. But this has nothing to do with your projected drop off of iPod sales.
Dude, you're not gay if you pitch, only if you catch. So just close your eyes and pretend it's a girl, or think about all that money you're going to get from your rich deceased uncle.
Hell, DVforge could spend that $10,000 prize they withdrew for the aborted Hacker Challenge contest.
The thing that no one seems to be aware of is that DVforge, or any other of Jack Campbell's companies, innovate anything, despite claims on the various companies' websites. "Specially Designed for MacMice" usually means "We bought these leftovers cheap from a Taiwan manufacturer and charge you $10 over retail because you are a stupid mac user who is accustomed to paying too much.
Do a google search on Jack Campbell and DVforge, macmice, mactable, mac whispers. You'll find that Jack really has no shame, and that his actions in the past have crossed the line into fraudulent and dishonest. Why would this current case be any different?
Joe, I don't think you're getting Tom's point. Tom is saying that he could do YOUR job with a weekend's worth of training, That anyone could. All you need is a camera with a fast frame rate.
It's your typical geek attitude. Just because a geek is good in one field, he thinks he's some sort of authority in all others, or could easily be one with just a weekend of practice or study. This isn't limited to geeks, however. I run into this all the time in my line of work with clients that underestimate how long a job is actually going to take, what level of expertise will be required, etc. They end up hiring inexperienced crews, going way over budget, and getting sub par results with very little chance of commercial success. They actually tend to lose a great deal of money trying to save a little money by not hiring experienced professionals. Often times they have to reshoot. A good deal of my current business involves clients needing to reshoot.
What's tragic about what Tom is suggesting is that you CAN'T reshoot a wedding. It's a once in a lifetime thing (hopefully) and for this reason, a couple really should hire an experienced competent professional, for the reasons you outlined.
I think we were talking about (at least in the case of the GGGGP or however far up it was) a top of the line G5. I don't think the prices on top of the line two or three year old macs have taken a plunge. Dipped slightly? Maybe. But plunge? No.
You do have a point about the lower end of the mac spectrum. An eMac is not going to hold it's value, not compared to anything like a G5 computer.
Powerbooks (I'm guessing) are going to be the first we'll see with Intel cpus. Apple laptops have historically held resale value quite well. We'll have to see about that. Again, I don't think resale values will plunge, but I'm sure they'll dip to a certain extent. How great a dip is something we'll know in a year or two.
Stop spreading FUD!! The gigantic space frog isn't due until the release of Longhorn service pack 2 at the earliest.
It's people like you that make it hard for us zealots to brainwash the masses. What am I supposed to say? "Yes, OS X on PPC hardware is virus free, but watch out for the gigantic space frog."
Besides, I'm sure that Symantec will be selling Norton Anti-gigantic space frog by the time it gets here.
Uh, we're not talking about an investment that appreciates over time. We're talking about buying a piece of equipment that will be used now and over the next two years to make money. Even if you invest in a "live" platform, the value of the equipment is not going to increase in two years.
Are you suggesting that people who earn a living with their computer put their businesses on hold for two years, until the transition to Intel CPUs is complete? Perhaps in your line of work, the choice of platform is irrelevant. Perhaps your software never gets upgraded and your system requirements never change. That's fine. But it certainly doesn't apply to everyone across the board. In some fields, you do need the latest and greatest to stay competitive.
If you switched to OS X just to use it EXACTLY the same way as a Linux box, what was the point of switchting?
Because he never switched for the two weeks he claims. At best, he poked around on a borrowed computer so he could proclaim, "This is teh suck" on slashdot and troll a few mac users. It's pretty clear he really didn't put any effort into trying out OS X.
Kind of reminds me of the kid who refuses to eat anything but his mom's cooking.
Better yet, if they want to avoid the sun's radiation entirely, they should go at night.

I think exploding heads would be more visually appealing.
It's like that old joke about the contest in which first prize was a week in Cleveland. Second prize was two weeks in Cleveland.

If you're going to play the numbers game, why not ask people of both genders, and double your chances of getting a date?
You have achieved the perfect analogy.
Is that an Apple fanboi humping you, or are you just glad to see me.
A one button phone?
Frst Paste!!!
Then chances are that you don't have the same generation model as the GP. So put it back into your briefcase.

1) I think you are confusing "Pundit" with "Shill".
2) Why would Bill Gates want a Pundit when he has Shills like Enderle?

So you believe that a 20 year trend is about to reverse itself? On what evidence are you basing this belief?

Have you checked out O'Reilly's MacDev Center? O'Reilly actually has a book specifically tailored to your stated need.
(Despite the similarity in our names, I am not related to Tim O'Reilly and have no financial stake in his company.)
