I've used that interconnect monstrosity that pretended to transparantly couple Oracle to Progress. It did this by duplicating (or somesuch) the Oracle schema in the Progress dictionary. I'm not sure if it is still available, but I hope to never, ever encounter it again. Never saw such non-deterministic behaviour in a database as in that piece of work.
However, I really like 4GL for business logic. I really hate PL/SQL for that. I just finished a project building a large data warehouse in PL/SQL and that's something I'm never going to do ever again.
Next project will be Perl + Postgresql, quite look forward to that!;-)
I would talk of progress here, but Progress is by far the absolute worst database system i have worked with.:)
I've used Progress for the last eleven years (started with 6.x, don't quite remember) and I just love the way it just keeps working. No need for a DBA to keep the database happy. And the 4GL, oh, the wonderful 4GL. It really doesn't get the credits it deserves.
That said, I'm available for freelance Progress work...;-)
I get more (legitimate) email from people that I don't know than from people that are already in my inbox.
Best solution for me is to let Thunderbirds filter out the spam. I get some spam classified as legit, and very seldom legit mails flagged as spam. The last few weeks the condition worsens though.
Yes, I think a few high profile example sentences for spammers would help tremendously.
Your parent poster made clear that the *theoretical* limits on pixel density prevent *any* encoding from storing this much data on a piece of paper. To me, that is a sound rebuttal of any claims of "new encoding" and such.
No matter *how* he does things differently, it is just not possible to get the required density.
But hey, you got to show your ignorance, that's not bad, eh?
So the government will get you when you don't completely comply with a regulation that affects a small group of people, but at the same time doesn't do anything to rid the world of the constant barrage of spam that annoy *everyone*, including the disabled?
Well, that's nice then...

If the old T-shirt with the Daemons Head was available I would buy one now. There is something about the Puffy mascot that just puts me off.
And Pufferix? Come on, wasn't there a Linux distro that got into major trouble over the -ix postfix? And that was without the visual representation of the cartoon character.
So, anyway, what I'm saying: get rid of the stale Puffy, get back to the roots with The Daemon.
- Firefox crashed on Flash, Edgy clobbered xorg.conf
- No more SMP support for my Core Duo. No, the generic kernel doesn't see the second core, I've tried all the online work-arounds
- Sound support is flaky, after a reboot it's about 50% chance there is any sound at all
- It is now completely random which media application can play a media file.
I'm going back to Dapper, I'll be back for 7.04 or 7.10 (Grotty Gofer)
Nice vivid description! I would like to render such a scene, but alas, I couldn't model myself out of a wet paper bag. Maybe someone else is up for it?
Don't get your panties in a bunch. Parent made it very clear that current hardware (or even slightly older hardware) is actually unbelievably fast. It should be able to run almost anything you care to use instantly. Yet, for some reason, perceived speed (or responsiveness) hasn't improved in the last, say, 20 years.
Why is this? Because software is bloated and layered beyond reason.
To re-iterate the point I tried to make: current hardware is blistering fast, it's the software that's crap.
Sometimes I wonder when Linus uses phrases like 'Kicks Ass' 'Couldn't care less' etc., (I refer to his fruity prose in the debate on microkernels) whether he's really suited to his job.
So why don't you start your own kernel from scratch and try to build up a community of developers? Not that I personally like Linus (he's a little to slick) but he did get 'his' project to the forefront of development. At least give hem credit for that.
They don't suck blood, but they sure can bite! If really provoked they can and will bite you, with (at least for me) quite unpleasant itchy and painful bumps as the result. Nothing that won't heal, but I've had some bites annoy me for a couple of weeks. So, best to swat them, I'd say...
The original poster did acknowledge that there are faster ways to calculate the result. The point is that using THE SAME SOFTWARE on DIFFERENT PLATFORMS gives an insight into the RELATIVE PERFORMANCE of said platforms.
If you ever get some oil (maybe from a sorting machine, maybe from the postmans french fries) then your label is instantly ruined, it just turns black. Not a lot of oil needed either...
A collegue of mine has a 1600x1200 lcd monitor. A truly wonderful piece of engineering. And does she use it as it is supposed to be? No, she has her desktop at 1024x768, because she doesn't like the tiny letters in Windows. I showed her how to enlarge the fonts, but noooo.....
Just checked the handbook, it seems to have been updated to include the 6.0 release. However, it fails to mention WPA, it just describes setting up WEP.
Yes, you are a Luddite, we know. Some of us actually like to have a phone with all the bells and whistles because it saves hauling around a dozen other devices like an mp3 player, a camera and pda. Need internet? I'll whip out my phone and can connect to any Wifi, UMTS or GPRS network. I even use Skype to save on long distance calls.
But I suppose you drive around a horse and carriage too...
What amazes me is the weird color balance. Yes, I know Mars is supposed to be red, but why is the sand orangy-red while the rocks have a blue-ish tint? Did the sand not come from eroded rocks?
Load up your favorite image manipulation package (Picasa works well) and pick a nice neutral color. There are several things in the picture that should be white. After doing this, the picture is way, way better. Then up the color temperature (there is still to much blue) and presto, a better picture.

Parent has the most insightful post on Slashdot, ever...
Isn't it a given that there is always at least one typo in a post commenting on a typo? ;-)
Well, I'm off to bed, thanks for the heads up on the time...

I'm keeping my second edition though. My book fetish is already expensive enough without buying every edition and reprint...

BTW, are you sure the 15.4" is really 1920x1600?
Get some glasses, cow!
I really hope a completely updated handbook appears in hardcopy. Perhaps it will be ready when the boxed set of 6.0 is released?
So, is WPA supported or not?
