Now, your govt isn't stupid and knows this prety well, so they invaded Iraq as soon as Saddam announced that they'd trade Iraqi oil in Euros.

There are unfortunately plenty of examples of this on wikipedia, to the point where some articles are rambling and worthless. If you watch, the well-meaning are overrun by the tide of trolls/ideologues/etc. It's amusing to watch, but it makes me wonder why wikipedia even tries to have articles on controversial topics.

This is spot on. This is a great time for you to do low hourly rate tech stuff like fixing neighborhood computers, etc. This will teach you a lot of the mechanics behind consulting, drumming up business, etc. without needing to worry about feeding mouths as you will later.

You'll hone your core engineering skills enough as you continue to tinker, be it in college or via personal projects. But you won't really learn a lot of the instinctive business stuff there, like making customers happy, working out fair bargains, building a reputation and knowing how to sell yourself as a reliable ethical hardworking producer. These are traits that will come in very handy if you want to start a more serious business later.

Or Visual Basic. Seriously. If I'm reading the question right, the SDK is going to be .NET IL (written from C#), and you don't care about performance of the UI above that - you just want to experiment with different interfaces with little learning curve for new researchers. Sounds like VB.NET would work fine.

Interestingly, atheletes about 100 years ago almost never had knee problems. But they had a lot more sprained ankles. Shoes have improved to provide significantly more ankle protection. But at what cost? Knee problems often become more serious/chronic than ankle problems. It seems that the body may be better suited to naturally handle ankle wear than knee wear. And we may have circumvented this.
