No, it works just fine if the visual designers can make the characters sufficiently different looking. There are a lot of shows I watch where I don't know the characters' names (usually subtitled anime where the reading/listening action jumbles everything), but the context works well enough for me to get who they're talking about. Besides, it can draw an audience in, making them have to think to "get" what's going on and taking a participatory role in the show.

  7. Re:She must be kidding on Le Guin Peeved About Earthsea Miniseries · · Score: 1

Well, keep in mind that the "butchering" of FOTR you speak of is pretty subjective. I've read the books multiple times, and when I saw the movie, I though it was a pretty good adaptation. There were differences, but the characters were mostly what I expected and I had a good time. It's not that the script writers didn't "understand" the characters, it's that they don't have the same take on them that you do. (Though they seemed to have a similar take on them as I do.)

And about her being "just as guilty,"... for what? Is this about FOTR or Earthsea? As far as Earthsea goes, she can't really be that guilty, as the producers were pretty closed minded to her requests and yet they claimed to know her intentions (which is the main complaint, as far as I can tell).

See, the problem with arguing whether or not somebody "gets" the LOTR series is pretty useless. Unlike Le Guin, Tolkein is dead, and we're not going to get an authoritative answer on our interpretations.

  9. Re:No need for XOR on Lego Logic Gates · · Score: 1

While you're correct, I think that you (and the parent post) are missing the concept of a NAND gate. First of all, all you need is NOT and AND. OR can be constructed with them. Secondly, a NAND gate is a type of electronic gate that can be modified to become either a NOT or an AND. This brings down the cost of hardware considerably because you're only producing one type of logic gate. After the NAND gates are placed on the silicon they're burned so that each is either a NOT gate or an AND gate.

As far as I know (since the article is slashdotted), you can't even make a NAND gate from legos, but having both NOT and AND means you can apply the same logic in design. Your solution would be a pretty decent one, though, and totally implimentable given their resources.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with 3D modeling, but it's a horrifically painful experience, unless you've become so good at it that it's totally natural. Nothing ever works the way you expect it to, and getting any moderately realistic results demands hours upon hours (usually days) of modeling. Some 3D packages have sub-standard "undo" features... so if you screw up, you're done. Pack up your busted model and go home. And 3D studio may as well include a "do random shit" button, because sometimes that's what it seems like it's doing. Z-Brush is the only modeling tool I've ever seen that seems even remotely copable, but it suffers from a lack of a solid undo feature, and working with multiple objects is an extreme pain in the ass. I'd say there's plenty of room for improvement in 3D modeling, and anything that anyone does to make it easier, even if just a failed experiment, helps the industry evolve.

They're losing the sheer numbers battle right now. The DS has sold over 500,000 units in Japan so far (and a million worldwide), and Sony will only ship 400,000 units by years' end. It's impossible for them to catch up at that rate, even if the demand is high enough, because the production output isn't. Don't flame me, as I'm advocating neither. Then I took a calculus class where there were some physics questions on tests that demanded we know offhand that the gravity force is 32 pounds or something like that (I still don't know what the english unit for force is, but I learned that 32 == g for that class). To this day, I refuse to use English whenever I know physics may come in to play. That's not to say that it can't be done (hey, look at Star Fox), but it is to say that it can be harder for a developer to make a quality game when the platform limitations constrict them too much. Here's what I think: if Nintendo can show us something on the level of Quake 2 running on the DS at full framerate, I'll be sufficiently satisfied that it's fast enough. (Metroid Prime Hunters uses the portal "cheat," meaning that, while an efficient way to set up a game, it doesn't exactly show off the graphical power of the system.)
