  3. I am having something similar on Grow Your Own Replacement Bones · · Score: 4, Interesting

In a few weeks I am having a spinal fusion surgery to repair my back. My L3 vertebrae is broken completely in two and there is a half inch gap between my spine.

I was given the choice of having bone matter placed in me from a dead person or using my own bone marrow. Well duh! Which choice did I take?

They are going to put two titanium tubes drilled with many small holes in between the two vertebrae then fill them with a mixture of my bone marrow and this BMP material or something very much like it. The mixture will spawn new bone growth and cause the two vertebrae to grow (or fuse) into one large vertebrae. Titanium rods and screws will hold it all together while it grows, which could take anywhere from one year to two years.

This is from an injury that occurred about 37 years ago and degenerated over time from a fracture to the point of total failure of the bone. I'm told that it's a GOOD thing that it just now is coming to light because of these new procedures, otherwise had they found it when I was a child, spinal surgical procedures in those days were barbaric and had a low success rate. They say this new method has better than a 95% success rate, with the 5 percent failure due to people not doing as told afterwards.

If you KNOW what you are getting into.
I refurbish laserjets all the time.
I acquired three HP 4500n's and am very pleased with them. One was dropped and is parts only, one has minor problems and I'll get around to it one of these days, and one works great, I use it several times a week. I had to disassemble it completely and clean it up and do some minor repairs but it's great.

Only thing that scares me is what they refer to as "The consumables" and I don't mean toner..
There are a lot of user replaceable components in the 4500 that have a limited lifespan. And the price of those "consumables" is HIGH... One replacement part could cost as much as an entire used printer on ebay would cost.

Other brands may have similar practices, I don't know, I only do HP.. But be aware of it.

I also refill the toner carts myself. I have a large supply of color toner stockpiled and I'm covered for the next 20 years there..

One other thing to be aware of.

The NEW laserjets are all made in China and they are CHEAPLY MADE.. The frames are made of plastic or of very low grade Chinese steel that bends and warps very easily. They are NOT designed and built to last for years of heavy use, they are designed and built to fall apart after a year or two so you have to buy expensive parts or just buy a whole new printer.

The OLDER refurbished printers are usually made in the US with Japanese made engines are are much more sturdy, designed and built to take serious, heavy use and abuse. I have a lot of Laserjet III's and IIISI's that are in perfectly good working order and will give many more years of use because they were designed and built to last.

I'll take OLD refurbished stuff over new stuff just about everytime...

You don't know much do you. The website is only a formality.

Those prices on the website mean nothing at all.
I end up selling laserjets for $20-50 each to local around town. Never sold one single item through the website, though I would like to.

I do not charge a pick up or recycling fee. You bring it to me and I take it, no strings, no fees. You're done with it then for good.

I have GIVEN AWAY HUNDREDS of CRT's and printers away to people, churches, friends, neighbors, etc. totally free of charge, and in many cases I DELIVERED the equipment to the recipient.

If on some occasions I go to the effort to do a COMPLETE refurbishment those prices on my website are what I ASK, but not what I GET. The price includes a 90 day warranty. I put the equipment back into LIKE NEW CONDITION.

However, in most cases I only have to do light cleaning on the equipment and sell it CHEAP or give it away AS IS with no warranty.

When I sell it AS IS, you pick it up from me with no warranty and you get CHEAP equipment.

It's all good stuff and WORKS. No junk, just older stuff but all in good working condition.

You have no clue on earth what I do so why don't you just sit down and shut your mouth.

    2. working alone

Come on guys, you can do better than that.
    My typical daily run (pick up)is 20 laserjets, 4-5 21" CRT's, +/- a dozen PC's, 6-10 injets, and 2-300 lbs of cables and wall-warts.

If I can do it this much by myself and disabled at that, they can do better. And I DO NOT throw ANY of it away, it ALL goes back to someone. A lot of it I simply refurbish and give away or trade away just to keep it from piling up.

It's called LEAKAGE.. Yes, microwaves leak out of the oven. That's why the covers on them are ALLWAYS steel. Ever seen a microwave oven with plastic shells? No, because none exist. The steel casing is to shield the world from leakage.
