They block email from all sorts of people (read FRIENDS) that are mailing from some ISP that RR has a woody for. I think RR is doing it just to strongarm the little ISP's into folding. As those users get blocked, they get pissed and drop that ISP. The BIG ISP's are forcing the little ISP's out of business by exclusion.
I'm pissed at RR over it and emailed them but they say "too bad, your friends need to contact their ISP and have their ISP stop violating OUR policies. Either that or they can switch ISP's"
What bullshit...
I don't need a baby sitter. Stop blocking email to my account and quit virus scanning my email. Hell, I would be thrilled to get some viruses sent to me so I could LAUGH MY LINUX USING ASS OFF!
Damn I hate this nanny mentality and these pathic people that wring their hands "Oh woe is me, what shall I do about all this spam?" and beg someone for a solution because they are too damn stupid to deal with it themselves.
MOST people in the world have no business using computers. That AOL exists is proof of that.
many years ago and way back when, there was an FCC requirement that there was to be a minimum of a 1 second fade to total black leaving the program and going into a commercial and the same was to be applied leaving the commercial and going back into the program.
Of course this rarely happened due to the fact that college kids were running the place as interns and there was a *lot* of screwing up..
Anyway, I had been working on a circuit that would monitor the video stream for the fade to black and would mute the volume automagically on live TV. (This was about 20 years ago though.)
You would be amazed at the information that's encoded into a video stream that you can't see without special equipment. It's neat as hell. We used to send stuff out, like text messages in the VBI that only other techs could get. The FCC would have shit if they had known what was going on back then..
Anway, The point is that you can design circuits that KNOW (or are supposed to know) when commercials start and end and take action based on that. But it's not fool proof, it depends on the broadcaster sticking to the rules, and they rarely do...
I'm recycling old PC's and sending them out with Linux on them.
I put up ads in all the stores (a sheet with tear off phone # strips) asking people to call me to pick their old computers rather than throw them in the trash piles. But I do drive around with my eye trained on every trash heap I see. I can spot a keyboard cable hanging out of a box at a 1,000 yards!
I pick them up for free:) clean them up like new, install Linux on them and resell them for a very cheap price as a SAFE Internet appliance for browsing and email, and maybe other basic functions depending on the box and thier needs.
People throw away 20 million computers each year I'm trying to keep a few out of the landfills and make a few HONEST dollars for myself...
Now today it's Christmas and I have my cell phone, pad and pen and am will be driving around scanning trash piles for the next few weeks. I will, as I always do, score on a lot of them. As it is now, I have countless old ISA cards, SB16 anyone?? I have enough spare parts to repair ANY old ISA and most older PCI/ISA based systems. I expect the pickings to be much better this year as prices are even cheaper that ever and sales are UP!
And, I cull out the gems and keep the best stuff for myself... I found a PII the other day with a perfect ZIP drive in it. $15 for a new ATX power supply and bingo! I've lost count of how many older PC type power supplies I have. Oh yeah, I also found a pristine IBM XT 5160 with IBM color display, 640k, mathco, and a 10meg "Plus Hardcard"... It runs all of my old Sierra games like the KQ and SQ games from the 80's just like I was beamed back 20 years!
Keep throwing them away folks, a guy can't have too many PC's....:)
Um, no. I clicked on the article and told it to load in the background while I commented. It was still not loaded by the time I had commented and I'm on a seriously good cable connection that I'm exceptionally pleased with. That is provided I'm connecting to the right places..:)
What can they do for those of use whose hearing is already damaged?
I've had a huge loss in the midrange, affecting how I hear human voices. I have great difficulty understanding what people say and if I can't see their mouth as they speak I miss at least 30% of any given sentence. If someone has their back to me as they speak I miss more than 80% of what they said. If they are facing me but head down where I can't see their mouth, the sound is directed to me better but still I miss some. Most people that know me well know that they have to speak loudly and directly at me. Seeing thier lips move as they speak helps me to more better guess at the words that I *THINK* I hear them speaking.
I lost most of my hearing due to being around gunfire and monsterous diesel engines for months on end, then frequent ear infections from water exposure. Taking huge doses of asprin for several years for an unrelated chronic pain also did it's damage too, artificially inducing tinitus.. Now, years later, the damage is done and it's not so easy.
I can hear (or more like feel) low freq without problem and some of the low end of the midrange, I can also *some* high pitched stuff.
I can't wait to see a CURE for damaged hearing in a pill, I don't want surgery (not that it would help) and I don't want hearing aids either.
I'm recycling old PC's and sending them out with Linux on them. Fsck Darl and his voodoo scare tactics. Let him come after me. Nothing would make me happier. Hey Darl, I make money from selling Linux boxes, wanna make something of it??

Anyone had any luck getting the new driver installed on Suse 9.0 Pro with either the 2.4.x or the 2.6.0 kernel??
If so, how did you go about it?
I'm using the 4496 drivers with 2.4.21-144-default and having no problems.
I want to upgrade to the 2.6.0 kernel but am waiting awhile to see what plays out. I, being new to Suse (but not to Linux) am not yet wanting to play guinea pig...
LOL! Touche!
My httrack beat your /. effect!!
I win!!

Hell, I would take 1/2 that...

and all the money they spend sending scary letters, they'll have exhausted their legal offfense fund before they ever get to court.
Keep sending those letters Darl, we're low on TP over here!!
There is no power on earth that could compel me to purchase a SCO license. No even at the point of a gun.
Linux is free, as in oxygen. The very thing that SCO deserves to be deprived of..
100 megaton Hydrogen bomb on Redmond..
I see a new underground industry on the horizon, tweaked cell phones that mask your location.
If there is a GPS chip in them, hack the phone and screw with the chip. If they use triangulation, well, that's going to be hard to do.
One way or the other, people will find a way around this.
This is leading to something doubleplus un-good...
mod parent "insightful"
2.6.0, 3.2 and R.o.T.K. all about the same time?!
Where will I ever find the time to get a life!
I thought I saw "2 beagles successfully seperated" and had a vision of a bucket of cold water and two dogs.
/. then I found my glasses and figured it out.
I was wondering what the hell is this doing on
Ooops! I never thought of people outside of my country. Just goes to show how self centered one can be..
I now consider my self somewhat more enlightened..
for one second that the US Government is going to allow the Iraqis the FREEDOM that Linux permits?
No. Not for one second. They will shove M$ down their throats so they can root every box in the entire country at will from anywhere they want.
Expect to see a BAN on Linux imposed on Iraq, as Linux provides WAY TOO MUCH privacy and security from prying eyes.
My God, it's full of stars!
