Nothing works right, ALL the multimedia features are crippled and the package management system sucks ass.

After two weeks I dumped Xgl & Compiz because it's broken crap that can't go an hour without crashing and locking up. After a month I gave up on 10.1 totally. I reformatted the drive and did a fresh, clean install of 10.0 retail and by that evening I was up and running with everything working properly as it should.

Suse 10.0 is a little slow and clunky on my Athlon 64 3500+ w/1gb ram but it's tolerable.
The 64bit version has way too many short comings to use, namely it won't support my proprietary and very expensive Epson scanner. So until Epson/Avasys releases a 64bit driver I'm stuck in 32bit hell..

Anyway, Suse 10.1 SUCKS.. SUCKS with a capital SUCK.
This weekend I will be downgrading it to 10.0 (I was not too thrilled with 10.0 but it's better than this crap)

Unless you want a miserable hellish nightmare trying to install *other* apps stay away.
The Zen thingy is a piece of crap. It won't let me install apt/synaptic which is what I have been using for a few years now.

I am afraid that this will be my last hurrah with Suse. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and learn Gentoo. Before this year is out I plan to be dual booting OSX and Gentoo..

Buh bye Suse, you f**ked it up.. It was fun though..

One thing someone pointed out to me is the "smart" installer. Go to yast and search for "smart" then install it. It's similar (but not the same) as apt/synaptic. It will at least let you get some of the basic packages installed, you also have to paste this into a console, 'smart channel --add http://divine160281.di.funpic.de/smart-channel.txt ' to give you access to third party packages.

But all in all, I'm very unhappy in general with Suse 10.1 and will be downgrading to 10.0 no matter what. And forget about bling-bling compiz, that's a freaking disaster. You like to torture yourself? Play with compiz. Guaranteed to crash more often that M$ winders..

Once they get compiz and Xgl debugged I'll be thrilled to play with it again but it's way to unstable for me. I need stability. I have no tolerance for buggy crap.

As for the scanner, it was given to me for free. These things are close to 2 grand new. Plus, when I got it I was running Suse 9.3 pro 32bit on a 32bit P4. I upgraded to an AMD 64 last year and then followed that up with an upgrade to Suse 10.0 retail for 64bit. After discovering that many things under 64bit have issues I abandoned 64bit and went back down to 32bit Suse 10.0 (which sucks too)

I'm in the process of migrating to Gentoo 64bit. I'm going to keep the 32bit Suse installation available, I am dual booting between the two right now.
When I need to scan I'll just boot into Suse then reboot back into Gentoo..

That pisses me off because I am stuck running 32bit Suse rather than 64bit just so I can use this scanner. And I'm not just going to chunk out the scanner.
Avasys shows no interest in working with the 64bit world. Questions posed to their support dept and or forum concerning 64bit go unresponded.

I DESPISE the proprietary drivers but there are no other options. You take what you can get. Not all of us are rocket scientists that can write our own drivers and programs.
