Bill Gates is going to throw out twenty years of R&D on his own server (now home) operating system and is going to adopt some GPL style OS underneath it. Then again, if Mono ever makes critical mass, you could probably pull such a feat, ironically, in Linux.
I also predict Saddam Hussain will be a born again Christian by year's end. And pigs do fly.
You could easily customize GTK apps in other windowing systems, I'd probably convert over... although if Mono is sustained, I'll probably switch in a heart beat....
Back to topic, KDE is a top rate set and Qt is a top rate library. Its nice having a choice for how I want to manage my desktop. This choice may beat you the death with all the different builds you have to do - so be it.
... you could probably do something similar with...
a) A plane old computer lying around (I'd even say a 486) b) Your favorite distro. c) Java. d) You could run a clotheshanger through the bottom of the goals and make it complete a circuit when depressed. This could link up to a $5 gamepad or other cheesy input device. e) IIS? SQL? For Foosball? You could probably get away with plain text to keep track of things. If he was tracking velocity, shot placement, shot location, angle, number of beers.... well, I don't know how he'd get it. But if its just win-loss-ties, how hard could it be?
The ID reader was a slick idea though. I'll have to try out a shoppers club card on it.
Did they mention Extensible Markup Language in the article or could it be one of these???
- eXtra Money Language - eXtremely Microsoft Language - eXtra MuddLed. - eXtraneous Markup Language - eXtrapolated Modded Licensing - XBox Machine Language - XDocs Monopoly Language
Can someone clear this up? I don't have to time to tinker with the whole "reading articles" concept.
I think Sun is promoting Java to push Gnome to avoid Mono.... think about it.... if they push C#, it undermines Java... why not port everything to some sort of Java binary?
Apple: No hacking required. Some quirks but stuff works. Costs a lot.
Linux: Code-it-yourself. No support beyond news groups. RPM's are cool, but you're on your own if they don't work right. If you can't code it yourself, you're screwed. Finding hardware is a pain.
Microsoft: Code yourself insecurely by default with standard edition Visual Studio languages software at $200+... Forced upgrades because the code you wrote probably has buffer overruns you didn't know existed. IRQ's, hardware problems, driver hell, DLL hell is a separate type of hacking. The code you write will be obsolete in three years and won't even run on the next version of Windows despite the fact the OS is still fundamentally the same. Python/Java exist, but aren't bundled. Your money goes to the Starbucks of Software.
I use MS at work, Linux at home. I hack MS at work with DLL hell, Visual Basic, SQL Server. I hack Linux at home with Python, KDE, and a bash shell. Is any of it really better than the other?
I don't use Apple and haven't since college. No one's forced it on me. If it's like Linux, but easier for Joe User, well, that's wonderful. I'm just not lined with cash from my Microsoft job.
Unless you have tons of money to throw at Apple, your next religious option is Linux.

Maybe they can't give out the source because they lost it when Bill sold his soul to the devil during the anti-trust trial.
As a result, all the code behind the header files was converted to ancient Sanscrit. It now runs via satanic influence. So everyone can see the API calls but no one has any clue how it works.
That's a joke. Although if it were true, we'd never know the difference anyways.
Craig: Listen, I know you are a typical user and I want to share with you some very important details about your future personal computing experience.
Homer: Huh?
Craig: You have a computer. You bought it from us in 1996.
Homer: I did?
Craig: Well, your son did. He didn't buy it either.
Homer: Oh.
Craig: Anyhow, we let him keep it. We found out its insecure and in the next day or so, you will need to buy a shiny new one.
Homer: Why?
Craig: Because its insecure.
Homer: Why?
Craig: Because. So the old stuff won't work anymore.
(pause)
Craig: That's bad.
Homer: Doh!
Craig: But you have the chance to buy all new stuff. That's good.
Homer: I'm getting bored. Do you have donuts?
Craig: No. I'm off now. By the way, can you tell Mr. Burns that the software at his nuclear plant won't work on Monday, provided it isn't hijacked by terrorists after we roll out the new version?
Homer: Why did I let him in my house? How *did* he get in my house?
Okay....

How about GNU\PCI? :-)

Can we MAME this one?
Do I need an original Speak & Spell to apply the mod patch?
Will the Speak & Spell manufacturer put a stop and desist order for mod chips?
Will we? Will we?
How long until we kill this invention?

Everyone knows that Al Gore is the father of the internet and by logical extension owns anything that MS or Caldera/SCO does.
Napolean also invaded France and made peace with the Hebrews.
What's this do to United Linux, anyways? Does anyone care?

I thought it was...
Public Sub DoMaliciousCode(strSQL as String)
If Len(strSQL) > 25 Then
Call StrCopy(strSQL)
End If
End Sub
... for all those MS scripting gurus...
Can't wait to use this on my friends.

Don't forget Trent Lott on Strom Thurmond's potential leadership bid as a segregationist in 1948.
Duh.
So how is this different than the current administration in power in the USA? :-)
We have successful, capitalist, legal-schooled morons versus soon-to-be-successful, partial-capitalist, state-schooled idiots.

It's only free will if someone lets you have free will.
