  1. EROS: The Extremely Reliable Operating System on Justifying the Common Criteria Security Evaluation · · Score: 3, Insightful

While it sounds interesting, you have to wonder how useful it will be. Microsoft has said itself that windows wasn't designed to be secure (because they opted for higher functionality, albeit less secure funtionality). According to the website, EROS should be completely virus free, because there won't be any way for a virus to work. That sounds a bit like Palladium to me (only certified code runs). Personally, I think that if you expect to install any OS and expect it to be secure off the bat, then your in for a surprise. Even Linux has vulnerabilities. A properly configured Windows Box can be just as secure as any OS, you just have to know the system

  2. Abuse? on Microsoft Profit and Loss by Business Area · · Score: 1

I see a lot of people prophesizing about how Microsoft is going to use its Windows monopoly to take over other markets, but I personally don't really see it happening. While Microsoft has a lot of power in the computer industry (they were able to take out Netscape, and they're working on replacing every other media player software) but in other industries, they really don't have the leverage to take over a market. Take the X-Box for example. Microsoft made a superior console, and is selling it for MUCH less than its worth, but its still not dominating the market, nor, I beleive, will it. Sasme thing with the phones that Microsoft is selling. Microsoft has no leveraging power. If they threaten to cut off the supply of phones if a store refuses to only sell theirs, who cares? Most people don't even want phones with Windows CE (I know I don't). Most people want the phone to be able to make a phone call, and thats about it. Its the same thing with game consoles, and with PDAs. Just because Microsoft has leverage in the computer industry, doesn't mean they have anything in any other industry

I've been playin it for a while, my friend has an X-Box and he was 'beta' testing it (He had to pay for it, but they called it beta testing, anyway) and let me tell you, its awsome. One of the best things about multiplayer games in general is the fact that you get to mock your oppoenent, and your opponent can respond back. The voice feature works great, (although I don't think they should have the voice modulater, that gets annoying). It defintely made me anxious to get my own PS2 online (I'm lacking broadband at the moment, and I'm not going to bother with laggy gameplay on a console)

What they DON'T have the right to do is use anti-competitive strategies to make everyone buy said Microsoft Cell Phones

  7. Windows on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

I have a couple of reasons I like to continue to use windows: 1) Games - Most of the games released for the PC today (including macs) are released for Windows. Macs usually get the games next, and then finally Linux. 2) Standardization - Despite what I've been told, Linux is not that easy to use. While I was trying it out (Tried it out for a full month, formated computer, removed Windows copmletely, installed Linux) I usually had to compile each application myself, and it seemed to me that I never had all the libraries needed =P 3) Stabiltiy - Stability was never really an issue for me. When I ran '98 (I run XP now) I averaged about 5~7 hour uptime. While that isn't blowing anyone's mind, it was more than enough for me, as I often didn't use it that long. Just to see how long I could go with XP, I managed to keep it running for seven days before I had to reboot (I installed something) If you ask me, thats probably the biggest problem windows has, its that the slightest thing requires a reboot. While Linux is superior in infrastructure, and is more stable, since I'm not really using my home computer for anything other than surfing the web and playing games, I honestly don't CARE about those things. When it comes down to it, I want to go into a computer store, buy a game/program, insert it into my AutoPlay enabled CD-Rom drive, and just use the program. I used to think that when it came to computers, the harder the better, and I enjoyed the challenge of getting things to work, but once I didn't have so much time on my hands, my opinion on that changed very quickly.

Just 2 days ago, My ISP's accounting messed up and they cut off my internet =P Luckily, they didn't delete the actual account (just denied access to it) So once I called them, everything got straightened out. One reason you shouldn't use ISP e-mail service is because if you change ISPs, people who you don't know (but got a hold of your email address) can't contact you (for job offers, etc). Even Hotmail and Yahoo! Offer pay services (and since your paying them, you know its secure/reliable)

Because in the end, using a Microsoft OS is faster and more convenient for the end user. Until somone can get emulation for windows perfect AND easy (easy enough that people will be compelled to switch to Linux or another operating system) most people will always go through the path of least resistance for themselves, which is windows.
