  1. Re:Market Share on Intel Puts the Lock on Overclocking · · Score: 5, Insightful

Remember... all the big OEMs are pushing the high-end gaming systems to the "new breed of computer users". Just as there's a resurgence in IT spending, there's a new breed of home PC user that doesn't mind paying $3000+ for a high-end system. No, corporate America doesn't give a rip about overclocking cause they care about their warranties. But there's a growing group that does... and choices like this make them turn to AMD. AMD has better, cheaper 64bit support. And they still make overclocking easier. Intel is cutting off their nose to spite their face. Funny... you'd think Intel would learn from Microsoft's example instead of repeating the same mistakes...

Sure... wouldn't want to be able to overclock easily... gotta make us upgrade to the next, best, faster CPU. Maybe if AMD stops gaining market share from Intel, Intel will lighten up on those of us that want to overclock.

But those corporations are the *average user* I was referring to. Heck, I have 50+ PCs I'm responsible for. I have no intention of rolling SP2 anytime soon. Instead, we have a corporate firewall, AV software, anti-spyware software software, and built-in pop-up blocking in Mozilla (plus the google toolbar for IE). I don't need SP2 for my corporate systems. Sure, in time I'll probably roll it out, but I already have measures in place to address the majority of the needs that SP2 addresses. Its the average home user that just uses XP, Office, IE, and MSN... and they're the ones that won't know what broke, but probably won't get SP2 anyway because they don't have Automatic Updates installed, but if they get SP2, they'll call up Adobe or whoever and get the new versions of such and such. Unfortunately, SP2 won't affect a lot of home users until CDs start shipping from OEMs that include XP with SP2... since stock XP installs don't have automatic updates turned on.

  4. Re:So what? on WinXP SP2 Sacrifices Compatibility for Security · · Score: 1

Not so. Consider the recent Ask Slashdot article on the poor soul who repeatedly tried to re-install and patch XP (even with a CD with XP-SP1), but kept getting infected before he could get patched. SP2 is a good idea. The longer M$ delays it, the worse people will think of it and the more willing they will be to consider Linux. I am a Linux proponent and user, but from a marketing perspective, SP2 is necessary for M$'s survival. Waiting for Longhorn... which is years away... will do too much damage to M$'s reputation. They can't afford to wait til Longhorn.

The majority of XP users aren't using that many old apps anyway... the average XP user is just using XP, Office 2000+, IE6, and MSN. And the majority of 3rd party apps such as those from Adobe, Macromedia, etc will get free updates to be compatible. Its not such a big deal for the average user. I've often felt that M$ would be well served to release a new OS based on an entirely new codebase... get a group of developers that have never seen Windows source code, only the GUI and let them rewrite it without backwards. Then get the major vendors to release compatible versions of their software. Sure... things will lag for a bit, but Windows will get better and the app support will follow. Windows is still based on an almost 15 year old code base. Its time to rewrite it from the ground up. Screw the backwards compatibility. Move on.

Once Microsoft starts making a profit from its HPC server, then SCO can sue them despite their UNIX license. 22. Options... on What Keeps You Off of Windows? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I don't know that I necessarily "stay off of Windows" as I also stay off of Solaris, Mac OS, etc. I even stay off of FreeBSD. I use all the above OSs in my line of work (computer consultant). However, I find that Linux is the best platform for connecting to all the other OSs. Linux connects to Sun, Mac, *nix, and Windows better than Sun, Mac, or Windows connect to each other. I also like choice. I like knowing I can keep my stable RH9 system and upgrade apps as they are released, but I can also use FC2 and try some newer, bleeding edge stuff. For me, its mostly a decision of compatibility and/or accessibility with other environments combined with the fulfillment of my personal need to tinker under the hood... something I can't really do on Windows, and am sometimes limiting on Solaris and Mac due to not all the code being public. My Linux laptop connects to all the networks I need (wired LAN, 802.11b, Verizon celluar network internet access) as well as the OSs my clients use Solaris, Mac OS 9/X, Netware, Windows. Further, I find more vendors that are *seeing the light* are developing for Windows and Linux, not Windows and other OSs. For example, both Network Associates and Computer Associates have made recent Linux software announcements. Note that they haven't made any new Netware, or Mac announcements, and no Solaris announcements at all. I see Linux as the most thriving OS out there and the one with the most (growing) vendor support next to Windows. Heck, in irony, its even most likely that we'll start to see Linux viruses than we will Netware or Sun viruses. In summary, its interoperability and the ability to tweak things that makes me choose Linux over Windows... or to choose something other than Windows. In all honesty, its not cost as I have access to all the costly Windows' softwares.

Plus I've been laid off enough that consulting is my little "what if" plan. My first kid came about 2 years into my coding career. I have three now... ages 12, 10, and 3. When it all comes down to it... its all about time. I work Mon-Fri from 9am to 6pm. Mon, Wed, & Thur nights, I code and other stuff from 9pm to midnight. Tues and Fri, I don't do anything unless emergency requires that I do. Then on Saturday from 7am to noon, I work more. So I get my fulltime salary, another 10 to 15 hours of side work a week, but I get to have dinner with my family every night. I get every evening with them and most of the weekend. Having tried different combinations, this is the only schedule that allowed everything to happen without sacrificing something... either the boy's hockey game, or the wife, etc. Plus, being salaried, I can take a morning or afternoon off when the wife has to take a kid to the doctor or dentist. And with three weeks of vacation a year, I enjoy two weeks off and with the family, and one week I spend consulting full time for a nice little check that gets saved until November when we go Xmas shopping with it. For me its all about priorities and schedules and knowing when to turn the cell phone off and when to leave the PDA at home.
