I've been doing this for ages on Android using K-9. Android is about choice... make use of it. ;)

you like to hack, to spend time looking for an alternative email client that fits your needs and so on. I like to have something that is full-featured and works out of the box because I like to spend my time differently.

I don't think that something you pay that lacks features out of the box is about choice, it's just about lack of features

I find your arguments interesting although we might debate about them. Let alone the amazingly unfair conditions that rule content submission (copyright transfer to the publisher )

Back To your point now. The fact that Mathematica is not free as in beer, doesn't seem to me a scandalous. It's like if a chemist complained that the NMR equipment he used to identify his compound wasn't free. The fact that Mathematica is not free as in speech is definitely an issue, but going on with the chemistry parallel then the chemist should complain that that the manufacturer doesn't disclose the NMR equipment design (Which he will not!). So it is up to the chemist to verify the reliability of a certain model of NMR apparatus before publishing results, as the mathematician should do with Mathematica. If it would happen that Bruker (NMR producer) would start building unreliable devices I assure you it would be out of market in few years.
