    Sure there is; lock their systems down.

    Unfortuantely, too many lazy sysadmins think that's their job; preventing the end user from adding to their workload.

    They forget, however, that they are NOT the high priests of the network and that their job function is a SUPPORT role in a company.

    All I know about windows is that it's getting more and more complex.

    And suddenly they're stopped writing software and adding features to *NIX apps?

    Yeah, the common command line and configuration file options to mySQL and apache and so forth just keep getting simpler and simpler...

    Like I said, in general, you get a much more experienced support individual in a *NIX sysadmin than you would an MCSE.

    What hat did you pull this rabit out of? All of these superior trained *NIX administrators are coming from where?

    No matter how many times the results of experiments agree with some theory, you can never be sure that the next time the result will not contradict the theory.

    I really think you need to jump off the top of a building. Of course, theory indicates that your puny little mass will be attracted towards the bigger one far below, but I'm sure that in your case the results will be different.

    The upshot is that in a given domain, "theory" is nothing more than our current explanation of observable fact. Newtonian physics may fray around the edges, but it still adequately predicts the end result of your little experiement...

    To quote Amazon...

    So Amazon gives the site a piece of code that they put on their page. When your browser displays it your Amazon cookie is sent to Amazon, who knows your name and inserts it into the text as an attention getter.

    So, to repeat this, they did NOT give the site your name or other personal information. It was not resold. Which means you're jumping around like an idiot for no reason.

    If you're going to rant about something, it sometimes helps to know WTF you're talking about.

    Not always. But sometimes.

    Of course, then you don't need it. Just use the nuke plants to make electricity that uses the existing infrastructure into which you plug in your pluggable-hybrid... just as in the article.

    Agreed, but I'd even go so far as to say the skill sets of many developers are somewhat less that adequate, especially as it relates to design and testing.

    This is, however, in direct contrast to their own "perceived" abilities, in which many think they're the hottest sh*t to ever come down the pike. (Also known as the fighter jock mentality.)

    Too many pick up a book about PHP/MySQL and have now suddenly transitioned to being "expert" web developers, or read About Face and now believe they're usability experts.

    Be unfortunate enough to land too many of these guys on the same project, and it may NEVER get done...

    Even bankruptcy won't help, as Congress is about to vote April 6th on the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005.

    Aptly named, the act "protects" banks and lenders from those nasty middle-class comsumers who lose their jobs, whose families break up, and who suffer unforeseen medical emergencies.

    It's supposition of guilt. These companies assume that you will "infringe" their copyrights...

    Actually they don't, just as I don't assume that everyone I meet is dishonest. But the fact remains that some people are crooks, and as such I have a lock on my door. To do otherwise is to risk getting ripped off by those who feel entitled to my stuff.

    Yes, the lock is inconvenient... but from my perspective the alternative is worse.

    Yet there is inevitably conflict, because if I'm the creator of a work, then I have a right to benefit from it's creation. Whereas other people seem to feel they're entitled to my efforts, without compensation, simply because it can be easily stolen.

    Or to put it another way, my right to do whatever I want stops the moment my fist touches your nose...

    I also wonder about the mindset that says all software should be free. Why is it if I work 40 hours a week writing software I should give it away, but if I work 40 hours a week busing tables I can get paid for it? Free books, music, movies, and software is a wonderful concept... but unfortunately food, rent, clothing, medicine, transportation and many, many OTHER things are not free. Why do artists, musicians, directors, actors, and programmers not deserve a paycheck?

    The problem could exist. I'm currently upset with eBay for it's plans to drop half.com, which they aquired a while back.

    Yeah, it makes perfect sense to "merge" a perfectly good, usable, and friendly system like half.com into ebay. Everything, after all, should be an auction...

    I think your rule is off by several orders of magnitude.

    While it's true that some photographers often shoot hundreds of pix of a given subject, the vast majority of those "rejects" would still have been images the average Joe could never have taken.

    While luck counts, skill counts for more.

    Which may not help if someone comes up with another submarine patent. It's difficult to insure everything is royalty-free when you don't know the patent is there, or that one you don't think applies in fact does.
