CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc. start losing eyeballs to more regionally-oriented channels (e.g. NWCN in the Portland-Seattle corridor, where you get news that's local enough to matter directly, but regional and global enough to keep you apprised of stuff you might want or need to know. Yes it's run by Comcast, but it does open more than a couple of doors to competing local interests who want to do similar things).

I see what you are saying with this but I think Howard Stern proved that theory wrong, at least in radio. He was unable to get syndication in markets for a while simply because program directors thought you had to know local streets and high schools, etc. As it turns out, not many people give a shit about that stuff. Most local news programs have low production values and who really wants to hear about the local AAA baseball team winning or losing? Orange County, CA has a few local stations already and they all suck IMHO.

From what I was reading the EBS system started out requiring them to test weekly at random days and times between 8:30AM and sunset. I wouldn't doubt that they are now just subject to random days and times to include the whole 24 hours but I can't confirm. In my own experience they've come on day or night though.

  16. Re:Freedom. on FCC Moves To Regulate Cable TV Competition · · Score: 1

Your missing the point of my statement which is that it's damned near impossible to get into a cable market. It's great that your satellite dish can receive signals from the sky reliably, call me when you can make a phone call, pull down 2-3 different movies and surf the web at 10mbs reliably. All that with not much latency either...

I would agree cable providers used to be pretty bad with service. But lately they are usually quite responsive, sometimes the same day, and that's after talking to them probably 150 times in the last year (job related - East to West coast cable co's.)

  18. Re:Freedom. on FCC Moves To Regulate Cable TV Competition · · Score: 1

But I think the question is, how does a business get into the cable market without just actually purchasing the whole cable company. It's not like Cox, Comcast, Adelphia, etc. are allowing anyone to even attempt to sell cable in their cities. DirecTV and DSL don't seem to have anything on a solid cable line yet, so while it is technically a competing business IMHO they both suck in comparison.
