But what if Walmart, Target, iTunes, Amazon, Clear Channel, and others all got behind the standard and said they wouldn't sell/play the recordings if they didn't meet the standard. It probably won't happen, but if it did, I bet the studio engineers and executives would follow suit. However, I think the standard would have to not only include a volume limit, but also limit the ability for the engineers to compress the dynamic range. Not sure how easy it would be to police this as some music is loud throughout the entire song, but I'm something could be down about it. But it won't happen, because most people don't care.

  3. Re:ha on Netflix Killing DVDs Like Apple Killed Floppies? · · Score: 1

I think that USB storage standards are what did it. Before that, the only reliable thing you could bring between machines was Floppy and CD-R. CD-R was annoy if you just wanted a single file, and you couldn't just work off them (open file, edit, save), like you could with a floppy. so they didn't kill floppies either. What killed floppies was the fact that there was drivers on every machine that let you plug in your USB storage device into any computer and have it just work. If IOMega could have got MS to include the zip drive drivers by default in all windows installations, they probably would have all but eliminated the floppy drive as well. Same goes for LS-120 or any other format.

  5. Re:4.5 kg isn't so much on Do Two-Screen Laptops Make Sense? · · Score: 1

I agree. It would make much more sense just to build a modular laptop with a base station, which would consist of the keyboard trackpad, motherboard etc. and then have small thin monitors you can plug in. This way if you only needed 1 monitor on a particular day, you would only have to bring 1 monitor, without all the extra weight. It would probably make sense to have each monitor contain it's own battery, so you aren't carrying extra battery weight when not needed, although it would make charging more cumbersome. You could set up your monitor any way you like, as far or as close as your like. You could probably easliy accommodate 3 or 4 monitors on a single laptop, and you could easily support different screeen sizes, without increasing the size of the base unit. For the standard setup with just a single 14 inch monitor, it would probably be about the same size as a regular laptop. Most people would just be happy with a very portable monitor that has it's own battery. Plug it into the existing VGA or HDMI port on your laptop and you instantly have 2 monitors.

My country has a negative growth rate. Why should they enforce any kind of maximum on the number of children? There countries with high birth rates tend to have many more problems to police than telling people how many kids they can have. Granted in many of those cases they would solve some problems this way, but they got bigger problems anyway. For the record, I have 3 kids and we aren't having any more. However, I think that this problem really can't be fixed because the countries with the problems really don't want to be the ones dealing with enforcing it.

For my software engineering degree, I took biology, psychology, environmental science and many other courses that I had to buy textbooks for that I have no need for any more. Granted, I was able to sell the dead tree versions I bought, but I would have been nice to save even more money by renting certain textbooks for a single semester. Also, I had a lot of courses the recommended very bad textbooks, I would have much rather rented the required text and spend the remaining money on a good text that would have served my much better.

But then again, sometimes the physical CD is cheaper. This is why people aren't buying more stuff from iTunes and similar services. iTunes should probably be about a quarter for a single track, and about $3-$4 for an album, then you will see sales rise. With no physical product to move, there should be no reason it costs anywhere close to the same price as a CD. Make the price low enough so that people impulse buy, and don't even think about whether or not the song is worth it.
