You don't have to include the cost of the HD TV set if you are comparing to PC gaming, where you typically have a 17 or 19 inch monitor. You can get a "High Def" 17 in TV screen for not too much money. I'd rather game on a 30 in SD tv than a And don't count a receiver/amp for the audio, unless you are going to have something similar for the PC games.

Having said that, if you want a good gamepad for you PC, go to your local electronics store. They have USB to GC/PS2/XBox adapters so you can use your favourite controller on your computer. Much better than anything offered for PC. I find that with PC gamepads, you have to spend twice as much, to get something even close to what you get with consoles.

Which is why OnDemand Cable is such a good thing. Sure it's not DVD quality (Ok you can argue that it is, but it's more compressed than most DVDs i'v seen), but you can watch it instantly, rewind, fastforward and pause just like a DVD. And you can start watching the movie in Under a minute. Also, the prices that I see are the same as renting at BlockBuster. I know you can get movies cheaper at the corner store or indy video store, but On Demand cable is where it's at. I think that this distribution model is much better than iTunes, because you can easily watch it on your home theatre, without having to worry about hooking it up to your PC, and without having to wait.

I think that high profit margins are what they are looking for, but I can't see a real gamer wanting to buy a computer from HP. The gamer crowd would either build their own, or buy from a small company, so that they don't have the same computer as everyone else. A Ferrari isn't "that" much better than a Corvette, but you know that you will get a lot more stares, and be part of an elite group when you buy your Ferrari. People buy these gaming PCs as status symbols. Once it's just another computer from a giant manufacturer, will they still have the same appeal?

  6. Do you have to buy someone? on HP to Acquire Voodoo PC · · Score: 4, Insightful

Do you have to buy someone in order to make a good product? I mean, it's not really that hard to make a gaming PC. I guess by buying someone out, they get to use the name, with brings in customers, but I really don't see the big draw. HP is a big enough company that if they put out a real gaming machine, with really good specs for a good price, I'm sure it wouldn't go unnoticed.

Having said that, what's with all the big companies wanting to get into gaming PCs? That's a very small market, and with all the consoles coming out with HD, I don't see PC gaming getting a larger market (although I don't know if it will shrink). I just checked Voodoo PC, and their cheapest rig starts at $2800. For that price you could buy a PS3, XBox360, and a Wii, oh, and a ton of games, and still come out on top. I realize that there's a few games that are just better on PC (RTS and FPS), but seriously, I don' see a lot of people wanting to spend that much money on a computer.

The wii also has holes (ports?) for the original GC controllers. So you can still make games that use that controller, and plug in your GC controllers and play your GC games. I'm sure that there will be a few developers who will just tell you to use a GC controller. Which wouldn't be a big expense. Those things are only $30 CDN ($20 US, I Think). I know most people would pick up 1 or 2 if it made playing certain games a lot more comfortable, or if certain games supported only that.

Oh Now they have Fibre Optic, which is even faster, so they can start charging people $70 per month for internet access. It's the same with Cable TV. You can get free over the air, or you can get analog cable for $25 a month. But now they come out with digital cable, which will cost you $50 a month. Oh wait, now we have HD Cable, which costs $70 a month. I realize that you don't have to upgrade to the services you don't need, and you can still use dial up and over the air TV if you want, but the truth is that the service providers love this stuff, because they stand to make tons of money off stuff that people don't really need, but that they can be convinced they need. Most of these out of copyright books cost around $10 in paperback, but the are free to download. If enough people start reading free books and stop reading the new stuff, then the publishers will have to come up with a better way to reach the readers. Here's the problem though. Most publishers make money by selling the hard cover edition for $30 (which is only marginally more expensive to make than the paperback) for the first year, and then a year later releasing the paper back. They won't be able to do stuff like this with ebooks. Since there's no such thing as a hardcover book.

It's well known by anybody who has ever worked in government that most departments spend their remaining budget on plasma TVs, new computers, agendas (the paper kind), and other expensive or unneeded things right near the end of the fiscal year. The rational is that if you don't use up your budget, you'll get less next year, because you obviously don't need the money you aren't spending. You've said it. I've found that school teaches very little about programming in the real world. Sure you get some security courses, adn they are great, but I think there should be a class on the common problems that show up in programming. Things that should really be taugh are:
    1. Always use parameterized queries and never construct your own queries by concatenating strings. This will not only speed up the application, it will make sql injection attacks a non-issue
    2. Always verity the users input. You never know what the user is going to try to do with bad input.
    3. When programming in languages like C, always check to ensure that the user can't perform a buffer overflow attack.
I'm sure there's a lot of other things that people could add to this list. There's a lot of mistakes that happen over and over again. And I don't think that it's because people don't care, or aren't smart enough, but simply because they don't know the problem exists.
