That's not how AppLocker works. You provide a whitelist on which signed applications will run. So anything not installed and supported by IT will be blocked.

  2. Re:Someone is gonna open it. on AU Government To Build "Unhackable" Netbooks · · Score: 1

Vista and Windows 7 have the ability to prevent unknown USB devices being used, and allows locking down to only specific thumb drives. The AppLocker feature is something in Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate that allows you to setup policies on the machine as to what executables can run. This is required signed EXEs and allows you to lock down to specific versions of an executable. It's not perfect security, but it won't be as simple as copying something off a thumb drive.

I hope they have the BIOS locked down with a password that is coded in the BIOS rather than something that can be worked around with a BIOS reset. If that is the case the only obvious point of attack would be to remove the hard drive and replace it with another with a OS already on it.

It runs a 10GB drive that had to be partition into 5 different parts due to the FAT16 2GB memory limit. Windows 3.1 flies with 32MB of RAM, as soon as you type win and hit enter at the command prompt it takes less than a second for OS to be loaded. I wouldn't recommend using this for anything anymore, but it was fun back in the day.

And once again Apple's elitist attitude comes out in their discrimination of people who's hands have been horrible mangled in heavy machinery. With a normal two button mouse you only need one finger to operate either button, but needing two fingers just to get a context menu? I guess I will need to stick with Windows until the day Apple sees that people with only one finger also deserve context menus. And until that day I would like to proudly present that single finger to Steve Jobs.

  6. Re:I don't understand... on Behind the 4GB Memory Limit In 32-Bit Windows · · Score: 1

The problem is without PAE, if you have 4GB of memory, you won't be able to access all of the memory because hardware devices will be mapped to some of that address space. So if you have a 512MB graphics card, 512MB of addressing space will be taken up so you'd only have 3.5GB (actually less due to other devices).

With PAE enabled with just 4GB of RAM, all of the memory could be addressable by any of the 32bit programs, and the devices would the extended addreseses. Microsoft's concern was that many drivers wouldn't handle this correctly so they disabled PAE.

Seeing that they took PAE support away from XP with SP1, I'm assuming that their testing turned up that their concerns had some merit. With the release of Vista you had the choice of 32bit or 64bit at launch so if you needed the larger amount of memory you just went with 64bit and PAE still wasn't needed.

Most people likely won't need to bother with XP mode. XP mode is being included to allow badly coded business applications that are hacked together that work on XP run on Windows 7. Surprisingly every report I've read has Windows 7 having better compatibility than Vista, so throwing in XP mode will have it run everything that works under XP. I do wonder if XP mode will allow the sharing of USB devices like you can in VMWare. I still have some old legacy hardware that does not have 64bit drivers and it would be a nice way to have these devices still be useable under Windows 7.

If you do this I recommend downloading XMBC Media Companion which will create .NFO files with all of the information and provides a nice interface to modify any information rather than having to use the built in XBMC method.

If you are using XBMC under Windows, the built in Samba client isn't the optimal choice as it is buggy in the Windows build compared to the Windows one. It is recommended to map your network shares to drive letters and access them as normal drives under XBMC. Use the following command under a command prompt to create a persistent network connection. Unless I'm completely mistaken the Xbox launched at $299. The cheapest AppleTV is $229 at Apple's website right now. It is no longer possible to purchase an Xbox brand new expect off 3rd party channels. However, used consoles can be bought from any Gamestop for $50. A purchase of the original Splinter Cell for $3 and some time will allow you to softmod your Xbox and install XBMC.

The specs on the Xbox might look extremely underpowered right now and they are for HD playback, but the Xbox doesn't have an Operating System like the AppleTV is trying to run concurrently. XBMC also does not have hardware accelerated video playback so the AppleTV is limited to 720P playback, and depending on the format and encoding it will choke on some files. The Xbox on the other hand will be even more limited on what 720P content it will play back, mainly only MPEG2 streams at that resolution.

The other issue with the AppleTV is that you still need to hack it just like the Xbox. There was a Boxee installer for it; however, shortly after release an update magically came out that updated the system if you had automatic updates enabled. This updated the OS, removed Boxee and closed the hole they used to install it. That's not exactly the open platform I'm looking to run as my media frontend IMO.

The disks actually aren't an authorization key. The retail versions of Valve games come with a disk and a CD-key. You can start Steam and then select the activate production option and add the key. The game will then attach itself to your account and you can download the game if you want.

The disk just contains copies of the game's data files from it's initial release. It can save you a little bit of time with not having to download everything though.

You are right about the trick into making you thing you "own" something though.

Steam doesn't let you gift games out of an account. It's true that you can purchase games and then gift them to someone, but once a attached to an account it can't get sent to someone else. This prevents people from being able to trade games with one another which is one of my main issues with digital downloads and the new installation limits in newer games.

Can someone explain to me why the set top boxes that we will need to get OTA HD for standard definition TVs cost anything more than $0?

There is the converter box coupon program that lowered the cost of the boxes and with the lower end units some of them became free.

Many people have cable or satellite service and do not need the converters; however, if all of them cost absolutely nothing people would hoard them.

Barring receiving issues, with the digital signal most people will be getting better pictures then they currently are off the analog signals.

Since you have DirectTV this won't effect you since you aren't using over the air signals. However, with DirectTV you need a converter to make it work, DTV on a standard set is in the same situation as there are a lot of older TVs that can be 20 years or older and these of course don't support DTV just like your TVs can't tune your DirectTV service.
