Your idea is missing standardized connection. Then you could have docking stations setup else where for business use.

Plug your phone into a dock at Kinko's to access the presentation you were working on during your flight and print out new handouts.

Sit down into an Internet cafe and enjoy your office while following up with some leads via email on a full desktop experience. When you are done disconnect and none of your data is left cached on the system you were working on.

Add this to hotels catering to business men. Heck use wireless charging, near field to do a hand shake, and have the connection be completely wireless and this would really rock.

The dock has its own battery so it shouldn't drain the phone.

Accessing information on the phone from the dock is interesting, though a wireless option with something faster than bluetooth would be nice. The phone also acts as the data connection for the dock which could also be made wireless.

I'm not sure about calling it beta rather than first gen but there are areas that could be improved. Hopefully we can get a standard. Then phones will be able to easily interface with cars which is happening, but the API are different for the systems each auto manufacturer is using. I'll be interested to see where this goes in a few years.

I'm not sure on how old the hardware you want supported is, but you can easily the run the latest game releases on hardware that is three generations old at medium-high settings. The latest releases do require high-end computers to run with everything maxed out at higher than 1080P resolutions spanning multiple monitors and enabling 3D, but the current state of the console market has kept system requirements low. Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have graphics cards that are four generations old when compared to PC hardware and people are still drooling over the new games that are coming out for them. The trick is that the console are only running at a 720P and in many cases lower resolutions and being up-scaled. If you run games with those settings on a computer you'd be very surprised at the hardware that work.

What about $4? The Xbox is still a great option for a HTPC; however, if you want HD content you are extremely limited in what it can do. If HD isn't important to you then stick with what you have. But many PCs are now coming with HDMI connectors built-in and it's only a few bucks to but a cable or adapter to go from DVI-HDMI if you needed to.

Using a ION nettop is the current best replacement for an Xbox for XBMC. It takes about 10-15 seconds to power on and be at the menu after starting from powered off, but you can sleep it and have it wake instantly. The ION boards have built-in Ethernet, and normally VGA and HDMI. You'll also be able to find boards with a TOS-link audio out, but all of the ones with HDMI also support audio over that connection. IR support is a cheap USB adapter if build your own. Getting the box to power on via IR is tricky, but the Xbox didn't support that either.

The only thing you can't have it sub $100. The only devices you'll be able to get in that range are like the WD TV Live. None of the devices will make you happy when you compare their interfaces to XMBC.

The main issue with them is that it looks like you pay a monthly fee to access the service, and then you still need to purchase the individual games that are then linked to your account. Their reported ability to pause a game a anytime and then resume it minutes, hours, weeks later on a different computer located across the country is pretty neat though. As well as the fact that since they are steaming video, they added the ability to save clips after they occurred, so if you have one of those cool moments in a game you could save a clip and post it to youtube to show off to your friends.

  13. By design, your favorite apps would be precisely the ones to benefit from SuperFetch.

Exactly, I still can't believe all the complaints people have against Superfetch ever since Vista came out. The whole purpose of it is that it monitors your computer usage and keeps copies of commonly used DLLs and applications in memory. So when you want to start one of your favorite apps, the files it needs are already in memory and it can start instantly. Without Superfetch you'd be reading the files off the hard drive which is much slower.

If Superfetch is so terrible I wish the people complaining would just disable the service and then complain how slow it starting applications are on their computers.

Their claim was buggy 3rd party device drivers that didn't handle support for PAE correctly so the system would become unstable. I'm not sure about Windows 7 but PAE does not work in Vista as I tried it with the original release and SP1. If you need 4GB or more just use Windows 7 64bit. Hardware manufactures have finally gotten their act together and you have stable 64bit drivers for things now.

The two setups the OP is talking about have disadvantages. With the one large desktop when you maximize a window it fills both monitors and things might size oddly if your monitors aren't the same size/resolution. If you run two xsessions you can't move applications between the separate monitors since they are different sessions.

In Windows 7 multiple monitors were made extremely easy to setup, and a simple press of win-p will pop up a display which allows the mode to switch which makes connecting your laptop to a project so much easier than the old way of pressing the func-f(x) which didn't always work correctly. Windows multiple monitors also supports having separate monitors where you can maximize a window on a single display, but you can move windows between the monitors or even span multiple monitors. Is this setup possible to do under Linux? If it is you should point the OP to some information on getting it setup as it's the answer to their question.

Finally how do you have putty run an x session? You can use it to do an ssh tunnel, but you'll need something else to handle connection to the xserver.

I was trying this over a year ago to get dual monitors working while having SLI enabled under Vista. The recommended solution was to use an ATI card for the secondary output since the Nvidia drivers wouldn't see it and disable your ability to use SLI. When I tried to load the ATI drivers I couldn't get them to detect the card when the Nvidia cards were already active. I ended up being able to use a lower end Nvidia card which solved my problem.
