So why should I buy a Zune? Suppose I buy a Zune and spend money on Zune-compatible content, how will I know that, by the time the Zune Extreme (or whatever) is released, it will still play my content? For Sure. Not Maybe. For Sure. Not by using hacks, or re-ripping or whatever. For Sure.
I think it is too bad that Nikon will stop producing such gems as the F100, FM3A and the AI-S 105/2.5. There are probably other examples, but these just popped into my mind when I read this.
I love my Nikons -- F100, FE and a bunch of lenses. All film equipment and the simplicity of using a manual-focus FE with a manual-focus AI 50/2 is great. Using the F100 with the AF-S 17-35 is great, too, but in a different way already. This equipment has been paid for and I know how it works, no surprises, just picture taking. That's wonderful.
However, what may well drive me to digital in the near future is the disappearance of real photo shops in my local town. With approximately 40,000 inhabitants, we don't have a single decent shop left. We used to have two and I particularly enjoyed being a customer at one of them. They're gone now. I need to take my rolls of slide film to what I think would be Walmart or Costco or whatever in the USA.
I know, if these shops send it to a decent lab with proper E6 development, my films will be fine. But I want a salesperson whom you can show a picture and receive advice, if need be. That period seems to be over, at least in my part of the world.
I begin to feel I might as well start planning a D200 sometime during this year and find advice, if need be, on the internet.
As for resolution and such... my slides look mighty fine, thankyouverymuch. My film scanner processes them quite nicely. However, that is only a tiny bit of what defines a good photograph. Composition, exposure, timing and whatnot are at least as important and I'm sure there's not much difference between a D200 and an F100 in that respect. I find so much joy in working with a solid camera, good view finder, fast response etc. If I were to buy something new, it would have to match or even exceed my current equipment or else I'd regret spending my money on it.
With respect to cost... I feel that replacing a Nikon F100 (and any accessories that cannot be re-used) with a comparable digital camera, such as perhaps the D200, may cost me something like EUR 4000 (grip, memory, flash, wide-angle lens etc). For EUR 4000 I can shoot a whole lot of film, at EUR 10 - 15 per roll (film, processing, slide sleeves, folders).
Re-downloading might be nice, but would a simple copy command from your backup not be just as easy and almost certainly faster? After all, you'd probably also want to backup and restore your e-mail (unless you trust GMail, Hotmail,... to keep it safe for you), your documents, photos, source code, whatever else. Particularly after a hard disk crash or purchase of a new computer.
Funny you should mention but the quasi-moderation system of ratings does a pretty good job of sorting out the wheat from the chaff; since we get a ton of postings regarding the rating system in the Site Feedback forum every week. Oh well...
The only service that could possibly stand up to the music industry is Wal-Mart. As I've written here before, because the music industry NEEDS Wal-Mart to sell its CDs, Wal-Mart currently holds the cards. I don't think the music industry has the guts to stand up to Wal-Mart.
How did that situation develop and why couldn't Apple/iTunes, or any other online music service, reach such a situation as well?
I guess most people wouldn't understand Free University Compiler Kit abbreviated like you did:-) At first, I thought you had flunked a few classes this year and wanted to share your unhappiness...
No! Please don't. Go for little details. Notice how the absence of sunlight also causes the absence of harsh shadows.
Indeed, don't expect a grand landscape to look great in dull light. Or the sky. Or lots of other "splendid" things. But do take advantage of the "mother of all soft boxes": an overcast sky.
I wholeheartedly agree with your (or rather, Robert Capa's) tip to get closer. Fill the frame.
I'm probably overly negative here, but why exactly is this "Stuff that matters"? Surely there must be more interesting things out there, like, say, ehmmm, about iTMS pending European launch?
After all, bad snapshots have been around for ages and will be around for many more ages.
Thank you. This looks nice indeed. It's good to have a simple app in my/Applications folder that can be removed without worrying about it having stored things in other places. The DivX player from divx.com, mentioned earlier, seems to put stuff in/Library/QuickTime and that wasn't removed when I dragged the DivX player to the Trash.
Yes, works like a charm. I guess I should have known that ".avi" actually means "DivX", or at least it does so in this case. But why not call these files ".divx"? Strange.
I think that's not the case for many people. Not everybody has high speed internet, many people still have dial-up. Many people want their computers to last a bit longer and a 500 MHz PC with, say, 128 MB RAM en 20 GB disk, is still useful for a lot of things, if only for playing music, writing stuff and using the internet. And besides, portable players are not (easily) available in 200+ GB capacities.
But I admit: when speed and storage are not issues, by all means go for quality. Currently, I use 192 kbps AAC and all my music stores just fine on my iPod. But both my iPod and G5 are very recent purchases and I want them to last for quite a while yet!

But what about your other data? Pictures? Movies? Documents? E-mail? Source code? Surely you need some backup mechanism for these things?

The trailer is also available on apple.com/trailers (bit late, I know)

Sorry, couldn't resist.
As opposed to, say, perfect technological security?
Hmmm, iLife questions seem strangely off-topic here, but hey... lossless JPEG rotation in iPhoto '05 by any chance?
This brings to mind MS's annoying habit of calling things by generic names (Movie Maker, SQL Server, Word, Internet Explorer, Media Player, etc.).
Windows?

Maybe that's what the winner did?

Actually, we are from The Netherlands. And don't forget our tulips. And we lured Andrew S. Tanenbaum to our Vrije Universiteit.
Well, isn't Japan in a slightly different timezone from Europe? If they both launch on June 15th, they'll still be first...

Very true; this whole story reminded me of Philip Greenspun's old Dickless Yuppie statement.

Same here -- no can play. It seems a bit silly to create an Apple related video and then distribute in a format that an Apple can't play natively.
What software do I need to play this? Yes, I'm a new Mac user. Be kind.
