  1. Re:Screw Tech Support on Techs Discover End Users Aren't So Bright · · Score: 2, Insightful

I could ... talk to a REAL LIVE ENGINEER (in many cases, the guys and gals that actually designed the software or hardware in question)

This annoys me to no end. I perform sysadmin duties and mild developer duties for the company I work for. I LOATHE (with a passion) the time I have to spend having to answer the tech support line. (Techs work 9a-5p, Business open 8a-2a)

As the only sysadmin on duty at night, I now much stop what I'm doing, and weigh potential outcomes. a) Is the person on the phone more important than what I'm fixing now? b) Will the person call management if I rush them off the phone trying to fix the problem I'm currently working. The list goes on. Have you ever been broken out of a "coding session" and lost your train of thought?

And to be quite honest, I don't want to talk to everyone. I am not "trained" to talk to people (ask my friends). I have a short fuse with any one not even remotely close to my level. I refuse to help my parents. And I'm sure many engineers/developers/sysadmins are the same way. They spent their skills in making things work, not people skills.

--I-- get frustrated when a user tells me "I'm using Internet Explorer" to my Operating System question. I am paid good company money to develop software and keep hardware running, not be a "Computers for Dummies" interactive tutorial!

I'm glad to see the EFF not only supports the digitial music initative but also mildly practices the fundamentals behind the MP3 drive and file-sharing.

Their campaign title, "Let The Music Play" was a well known song in the 80s by a group called Shannon.

So, by (and I use the term loosely to be modded interesting) "infringing on the copyrights" and using a well-known song title as the campaign against the RIAA, it was not only clever marketing, but a witty double entendre. :)

  5. Wireless AP / ISP Rules and KaZaa* User Names on The RIAA's Hit List Named · · Score: 2, Interesting

A few posters do bring up a good question:

Can you claim your Wireless AP under the same type of device as an ISP and possibly be ok? Granted, you might have to produce a list of POSSIBLE people, but then you can just say you are an open network.

Also, the changing of usernames seems to be a funny "workaround" for the time being. But consider how the judge will see your anti-authoritive point-of-view. Maybe you might get off on a "jury of your peers" (why does that sound funny?), but you will more than likely not get a snicker from the judge.

Obviously IANAL, but can someone help me out on this?

but that artists should get paid for what they do

I am damn tired of everyone saying "artists should get paid for what they do." No $hit!. We all feel that way. That was an extremely predictable comment. No one in the public eye would ever say "yeah, I'm glad I steal music, screw those commie bastards and their wussy space station" (South Park reference).

Seriously though, this is a form of laziness. Everyone wants something, but hopes that someone else will do it for them. A message to everyone who is in the public eye: Do not only say you support things, for you have power and influence not only in your words. Support things with your person or pocketbook.

We, as consumers are getting screwed and do not have the resources to do this. THIS is charity. We are close, help us reach the top so we can help others.

How can I convince you that by helping our cause you will not only create less people that need to be helped, but more people who will be able to help?

This is the main reason why we are losing this battle. People like Charlie Demerjian, so vehemently oppose the [RI|MP]AA, their words and ideas are poisoned to the point it does nothing but turn off the casual reader and make us look like a pack of bloody savages.

While he may have a good point (donation to the EFF), this reads like a 17 year old who just got punished and is now lashing out at his/her parents.

We need THOROUGH research into ideas and solutions and then we can practice them. And believe me, when the solution which is right and true (as well as easy and quick) DOES come out, it will be accepted and adopted by all (references: Napster, KaZaa, et. al.).
