LOL. After you said that I pictured Hunter S Thompson as his high school instructor.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

Incidentally this has been my experience installing games on Windows (not just on Wine). Many games are picky about which version of Direct X you have installed. I used to have multiple versions of Windows installed just to play my games. Some only worked in Win 98, others only worked in Win2000, and I had one that would only work in win95. The first time I photographed the moon I tried long exposure times, in the range of 2-8 seconds when the film returned the moon was a bright white blob with no detail. The moon is basically a rock that is being hit by direct sunlight and to get a good exposure you need to expose your film as if you were shooting a snapshot on a bright sunny day.

One guideline I find helpful is the "Sunny 16 rule": For a subject in direct sunlight set your f-stop to 16, and your shutter speed to closely match the speed of your film. Eg ISO 200 and shutter speed of 1/250.

Mozilla is a great project with much more visibility than Firebird. It would be nice if the Mozilla team could spend a little extra time to come up with a name that isn't already being used by an open source project. How hard could that be?

I agree. I have always liked how Access stores all its data in a single file. Interbase works in a similar way. All the data is stored in a single .gdb file which I can build on a windows machine and upload to a linux server.

Of course Interbase, unlike Access, is just a database server and does not have any front end tools. However there are apis for C, C++, PHP, ODBC, and JDBC so there are plenty of options for writiing your own front end. Interbase, like Access, is super easy to install. On windows you just follow the install wizard, and on Linux just untar the package and run the install script.

Most articles that I have read have suggested that companies take a "wait and see" approach before adopting dot net. Of course if every body listened to this advice then few would adopt the new frameworks and the whole thing can fizzle worse than the XBox. I think that Microsoft is going to follow their old strategy of giving to away for cheap, until people depend on it then crank up the price.

Some funny cartoons are produced with flash but producing web applications with it can be more pain than they are worth.

We build web applications using flash as the front end, php in the middle, and mySQL in the back. Our decision to use flash on the front instead of tried and true html was based on two promises by Macromedia:

    1. More than 90% of all web users have at least a Flash 4 plug-in installed . So if you make a flash based application the user will not need to download a new plug-in.
    2. Flash applications, look and run the same on all browswers and platforms.

When you start programming with Flash MX you soon find that your end user will require the Flash 6 plugin. Not just any Flash 6, the very latest version has some bug fixes that seem to be essential for some features. So promise #1 was broken because the users still need to download the newest viewer.

Promise number 2 was also broken because the applications do not work the same on all machines, and we now end up jumping throught the same hoops that we do with html. Design once, and test on every platform and browser.
