    It doesn't take 30 minutes to explain to any non-technical person the concept of "the date of this article is earlier than the date their patent was filed on".

    I know what I mainly need from an "office suite" is just a good word processor, one that doesnt lag 10 keystrokes behind me typing a simple letter.

    I don't want to buy or install a whole office suite, just the apps I need. Why does it all have to be bundled with junk I dont care about?

    If they have reasonable cause to suspect there's evidence on the HDD, but it's encrypted, they go get a judge to issue a warrant for your keys/passphrase.

    Then when you refuse to give it up, you're burned for violating a direct court order, and impeding in an investigation, etc.. You may end up in deeper sh!t than where you started. Judges dont cotton to hiding/destroying evidence, and they really get pissed off when you directly defy their orders.

    People are stupid - case in point - your idea is stupid.

    TFA sucks, but I'm going to guess that this AP wasn't open.

    It seems unlikely that they'd want their first case to be that shaky.

    Or, since it seems to say he was seen sitting in his car, and cops were called because that raised suspicion - he could have openly admitted to the officer what he was doing, and you wouldnt need any evidence past that.

    Whats the deal in the UK, are court records not available?

    I know in Canada, at least, the system is a little less transparent.

    How do you figure the US is lagging behind?

    Look at the guys map, South America, and surprisingly - Asia, seem to have the slowest uptake.

    The map doesn't have US specifically, but go ahead and assume that North America means USA only. We don't pay much attention to mexico or canada either.

    Radio Shack gave me one for free, and I had some fun hacking code for it to be able to organize my CD collection with a free handheld scanner.

    I don't know how they define "annoying". Someone gave me a free gizmo, I don't know why that should annoy me.

    Do you have a link to any sort of statement/quote that he made? Or is this pro-gaming a-holes doing exactly what you're accusing him of, exploiting this tragedy to push their (anti-thompson) agenda?
