Were cars better "back in the day"? Guess it depends what point of view you take.

It was certainly easier to be impressed, back in the day.

99% of the titles I played on C64 were shit, and the Atari 2600 or NES could only dream of a good/bad title ratio like that.

Gaming today is as it's always been. If you prefer the older titles (and to a certain extent, I do), go ahead and play them.

Well, duh.. Of course they are.

You don't just buy an iPod, you buy your very own iTunes franchise, set up in your pocket.

I think that's actually part of the appeal. Buying an iPod gets you "into the club", so to speak, where any other media player doesn't. People just dont realize the "club" is simply "apple consumers".

  3. Man, I'm way too late on Are Mobile Phones Wiping Out Bees? · · Score: 5, Informative

I am (was) an amateur apiculturist, that is, I used to have my own hive of pet bees.

My grandfather was a semi-hobbiest beekeeper who made a decent living after retirement selling beekeeping equipment, and taught me all about the wonder of the bees. I don't claim to be the worlds leading authority on bees, but I find them pretty fascinating, and know a bunch about 'em.

Anyways, I don't see Occam's razor being applied here. Here is what devastates bees:

    1) Foulbrood.. Comes in two varieties, American and European.. Makes the larva basically rot in their pupas. It can be prevented with teramiacin (sp?! its a horse medicine), but the only cure for an infected colony is fire, and lots of it - mandated by the authorities. It's been somewhat of an epidemic since the 80s. There is lots of talk about it spreading because of commercially sold queens, and or colonies. Ie; The industry developed a bee that makes lots of honey, but is succeptible to this. This accounts for a *lot* of missing bees.

    2) Africanized bees? A lot gets made of "killer bees", but once they move into a colony, that colony doesn't collect as much honey - and you don't see as many bees.

    3) Climate or other environmental problems. Bees will abandon a location if it isn't suitable. It's common to have a swarm (too little food or too much space, so half the bees pack up a new queen and leave) that leaves the original colony to die - too few bees left to tend to the queen, or an incapable queen is a death sentence to a hive.

I can't believe the "scientists" would skip past an obvious sign of climate change and jump straight to cell phones. I've never heard this before, and frankly, it sounds like a bunch of horse-shit.

I think the programmer side of the community is flexible enough to deal with hardware changes, and it's just that annoying end-user whining because he wants hardware X to work today, and the fact that he doesnt have it proves some world conspiracy against him.

The only distribution channel left is the 100% mass-market mainstream one. If you're looking for something obscure on CD, I guess you're stuck with internet or maybe at the bands live show.

Basically, the default behavior on any exception is to crash, and roll back any open transactions. There's just no way to recover from something unexpected, and still be able to guarantee that the next commit to the DB isn't going to fuck something up.

I have described this behaviour as intentional, and have played it off as a feature - directly comparing it to a competitors product, which took an "ignore error, keep on truckin'" approach. They fired the first shot by finding a bug that made our app crash, and claimed the crashing meant it was buggy. Meanwhile, no crashes on their side means no bugs.

So I showed how I could exploit a bug to start corrupting records, and even found a way to do it willfully (ie; change your parking ticket into a warrant for forced sodomy).

Of course, we treat every crash as a bug - but the fact that it crashes (after writing out as much relevant info as possible into a .log file) is a feature in itself.

To me, the 360 and PS3 don't offer anything that I haven't played before - they're the exact same games I've played since the PSX era, with the exact same controller. The games are just shinier. But, the Wii offers something new.

I've played Far Cry for both, both are supposedly "crappy" titles, relative to what's out there. But the wii-mote actually works, and I found the Wii version engaging because of it.

What does that prove? Nothing. Just that different people have different tastes.
