You've got it all wrong. In Linux, it would be something like:
[user@linux]$./check-hardware check-hardware: Device 0x378 returned status code 0x71 with parameter 0x26f. Segmentation Fault.
You have new mail in/var/spool/mail [user@linux]$
--
Wherein 0x378 = Base Address for "LPT1", 0x71 is the "Fire Alarm" Status, and 0x26f is the Hex representation of 623 degrees. Which is given in Kelvin and must finally be converted back to Ferinheit.
How about a real *working* clipboard? Don't get me wrong, I'm not the MS Fanboy my first sentence makes me out to be, but there's still much work to be done with the base architecture for common components -- Work that should begin before we start focusing any further on alpha blending doodads..
You have a weird view there.. Using DLLs you've not paid for? You just bought office.. That means you've paid for it, fair and square.. Why shouldn't you use them how you like?
IIRC, you did not pay for those DLLs, you merely pay for the license to use them. What those DLLs do internally is none of your concern nor is it within your ability to change -- again, you did NOT pay for the DLL, or even a copy of that DLL, but only for the right to USE it. If that DLL checks for a specific version of Wine and breaks on purpose due to Wine's presence, you then also have the right not to usethat DLL (I'm sure you clicked 'Agree' if you got that far), so switch to OO.o.
That's D. With garbage collection, interfaces, etc. 'D' looks very promising. Without the overhead of JIT compiled languages, I think it's worth looking at seriously.
(Don't get me wrong here, I love Java / C / C++ and all others, but C/C++ has some deficiencies that can not be over looked -- Just remember -- The right tools for the right job.)

While I'm a huge advocate of virus free and pleasant experiences or alternatives and although my argument may not be all that cogent, how would you propose another alternative to those VARs out there that want to utilize the wonder of e-mail to send PDFs such as quotes to clientele? Without allowing the ability for them to be modified? Printed for whatever reason? Password Protected (without webserver htaccess ability)? I know and am fully aware that any *nix based platform, l33+ h/\x0r w/\R3Z, or a simple screenshot could theoretically bypass such security, but your average quote or proposal recipient probably isn't technical enough to do so. In contrast, with unsecured documents, they surely could click and type away! PDFs have a place, and although I mostly agree with your argument, [X]HT[X]ML (IMO) isn't the answer to all scenarios. Best tool for the best job and/or circumstances I always say.
I am absolutely beside myself due to the fact that I haven't seen a single "Back to the Future" crack yet -- and unfortunately I'm not in the mood to witty-one-up myself [Sigh].
I don't need no stinking encryption. *I* have Windows XP, just let those government baddies try and get my hard drive! Soon as they plop it into another computer, the Windows XP registration assistant will notice that they don't have the proper hardware signatures and refuse to run the OS!
I'm not sure as to the internal workings of the AOL client, but you could use this as a way to connect to the AOL service reliably and use NAT to share your connection? Hell, throw bochs on it, run two instances with 2 AOL accounts and get double the bandwidth (somehow implimenting bandwidth loadbalancing through the ethernet interface?). I know this may be relatively expensive, but I have lots of friends who have roomies, who each have their own AOL accounts, and two phone lines in their residence! This could be useful for those who are too far away from their CO to get DSL, don't want to the (sometimes) astonomical fees for cable, or are otherwise broadband impared. Implications can apply to business environments as well. [Shrug].
So what? SO WHAT?! Initially yes, you are correct, we might have to actually put in our CDs to listen to our licensed music, oh woe is me! This is definitely not the point. This will only be the first action of many. A "starting point" if you will. Wait until you can't access your digitized home movies, pictures, and any other data because YOU didn't purchase a valid Microsoft "Signature". Then will you be convinced?
This is not a way to simply protect intellectual property rights. Maybe at the onset, but it also lays a foundation for M$ and other conglomerates to monitor and control every day use of YOUR computer; a "Big Brother", if you will. Think about DRM. Think about DRM's next evolutionary steps, think about how such a system will eventually effect you, then tell us again, "So What".
Or games. Utilizing the network technologies that online games are implimenting is, in a sense, browsing. You interact with others (Forums), you find information (Where's that dagger?), and you play games (www.shockrave.com). I would say 1% is relatively accurate, if not understated. Just because you don't use your conventional IE or mozilla doesn't mean it's not the same, you're just using a different "browser".

Well, 64 bits made Mario come to life. Maybe Micro$oft will make a fully 3-D rendered MSN Butterfly to help you with your daily tasks?
