also, even the low-end G5 is pretty expensive right now. if you want a bargain, you have to go with a G4. you can buy a faster athlon-based pc for that money. am i wrong?

well ps2 games are dirt cheap now. greatest hits titles are only $20, used games are even cheaper. so there is no need to pirate games, in my opinion. personally i prefer to have the orignial discs with instructions etc. i guess i'm a video game collector. although most gamers just want to play the games for free and dont care if its a copy or the original.
as far as running linux on ps2 i just think thats cool as hell. but i guess you have to be a geek to agree with that.
sony's ps2 linux kit is crippled. read THE PLAYSTATION LINUX FAQ for more info. i'm assuming with this, someone can run a regular linux distro on the ps2.
I have released a binary and source package that exploits a flaw in the PS2's
handling of a special configuration file. This configuration file, named
TITLE.DB, is accessed from the PS2 PS1 driver (located at rom0:PS1DRV).
To make a long story short, the exploit allows anyone with a memory card and
a valid, legal PS1 disc to hijack the boot process and run any piece of code.
Absolutely no modification to the system is necessary to use the exploit (my
only working PS2 is not moddded, and I have developed and tested the exploit
on this machine). All one really needs is a way to send the files to the
memory card to enable the exploit.
PS1DRV parses a file called mc0:/BXDATA-SYSTEM/TITLE.DB (the X represents the
PS2's region code) to load graphic parameters for the PS1 game that was loaded
from the disc drive. There is a catastrophic buffer overflow in the parsing
routine that allows one to overflow the stack and execute arbitrary code by
rewriting the $RA register. If we load up our own TITLE.DB, with an entry for
every PS1 disc that we want to trigger the exploit, then we can take over the
PS2 boot process as soon as the disc is recognized and PS1DRV is executed.
The file exploit.c will have to serve as documentation on the exploit for
now, since I've been rushing to get this out and in people's hands.

Another issue people have with Nintendo is that they refused to go with CDs during the Playstation/Saturn/N64 generation. The games were always more expensive for Nintendo, partly because of their licensing, but also because the format (cartridge) was more expensive.
What has kept Nintendo alive has been GAMEBOY SALES. Which is ironic because the Gameboy Advanced fuckin sucks. The processing power is about equivalent to a 16Bit SNES, even though the system is 32Bit. The screen is difficult to see. They fixed this issue with the new Gameboy, but I believe it's too little too late.
Nintendo made billions of dollars of the original Gameboy, Pocket Gameboy, Color Gameboy. The games for Gameboy were all extremely overpriced, yet they sold like hotcakes even though the system had been OBSOLETE FOR YEARS because there simply wasnt any real competition. Gamegear was the closest competitor. Today the trend is cell phone gaming, and what has nintendo been doing about it? You would think they would start making games for cell phones. But no. They are asleep at the wheel. and ultimately they will just become a software developer, like Sega. We will see Mario on PS3 and XBOX 2.

its not a myth. apple is cheap on the high end but try to get a new mac for $600. you can get a new pc for $600 easy. if you assemble it yourself you can save even more money. if i want a new mac today i have to spend at least $799 and thats for an emac with specs like this:

AFAIK, ATI displays the graphics on screen properly, the drivers are just optimized for the benchmark. One could still consider this cheating. NVIDIA however does not display the graphics properly, it really does cut corners (literally) to get higher scores. ATI got an extra 3% from cheating. NVIDIA got a whopping 24% higher scores from cheating! take a look at the extremetech screenshots:
