    Actually, the elevator's center of mass must be in geosynchronous orbit. Seeing as the mass of the cable must be comparable to the mass of whatever is on the end, that puts the center of mass closer to the center of the cable. And wouldn't Venus' longer period of revolution just make the geosynchronous orbit at a larger radius?

    Photons carry momentum which they can transfer to a solar sail, but they massless as far as we can tell.

    I wouldn't expect it to carry more energy because a photon is massless. At least classically rotational kinetic energy is zero for a massless particle. Though there may be some other quantum mechanical effect going on, the photon is hardly classical after all. It's a very interesting question...

    I'm not sure if there is a way to prevent this but if I boot a linux box on a gentoo install cd, I get root access. The obvious precaution is to set the bios to only boot from the harddrive, but many are'nt set up that way. Seems if you have physical access to a computer there's not much to stop you from having root access.

    Actually, there are on the order of 10^79 electrons in the universe. That gives a total mass around 10^49 kg. That's about 1.4*10^45 to 1.9*10^45 elephants and two donkeys.

    There are other events that might cause a mass extinction. A gamma ray burster within our galaxy could cause quite a problem. Or a nearby star goin supernova. Now there would probably be some evidence of these things happening... does anyone know anything about this?

    Are you sure this is a new feature?
    My gateway solo laptop with a PII-266 has a BIOS setting for enabling temp. controlled cpu clockspeed. And this computer is a few years old now. Maybe this is functionality that gateway added on.
