Actually, the elevator's center of mass must be in geosynchronous orbit. Seeing as the mass of the cable must be comparable to the mass of whatever is on the end, that puts the center of mass closer to the center of the cable.
And wouldn't Venus' longer period of revolution just make the geosynchronous orbit at a larger radius?
I wouldn't expect it to carry more energy because a photon is massless. At least classically rotational kinetic energy is zero for a massless particle. Though there may be some other quantum mechanical effect going on, the photon is hardly classical after all.
It's a very interesting question...
I'm not sure if there is a way to prevent this but if I boot a linux box on a gentoo install cd, I get root access. The obvious precaution is to set the bios to only boot from the harddrive, but many are'nt set up that way.
Seems if you have physical access to a computer there's not much to stop you from having root access.
I don't know about NASA. But I agree with your.sig. Right know I'm using my University's linear accelerator and one of the resonators won't stay in phase lock. Damn that jitter!
Hey Amber, did you even read the post that you replied to?
Original Post: "like spam which promotes some worthless stock and tries to make the stock price rise. Any of the current stock holders could have hired the spammer."
Your Post: " For stock scams, and the like, no. Just blast 10 000 000 emails out, and enough idiots will buy the stock in question to push the price up. Spammer sells his stock at a profit, and is virtually untraceable."
Actually, there are on the order of 10^79 electrons in the universe. That gives a total mass around 10^49 kg. That's about 1.4*10^45 to 1.9*10^45 elephants and two donkeys.
There are other events that might cause a mass extinction. A gamma ray burster within our galaxy could cause quite a problem. Or a nearby star goin supernova. Now there would probably be some evidence of these things happening... does anyone know anything about this?
Why is this insightful?
The post doesn't addres the parents concern over microsoft being berated for using bsd and apple being praised. Who said anything about Microsoft requiring windows to be run on microsoft made boxes?
The dead swans lay in the stagnent pool.
They lay. They rotted. They turned
Around occassionally.
Bits of flesh dropped off them from
Time to time.
And sank into the pool's mire.
They also smelt a great deal.

Are you sure this is a new feature? My gateway solo laptop with a PII-266 has a BIOS setting for enabling temp. controlled cpu clockspeed. And this computer is a few years old now. Maybe this is functionality that gateway added on.
2nd post!
This is a coin. If you hold it at a certain angle you see the chinese character, at a different angle you see 50.
Okay, I'm a dumbass! 225 days 365 days. Doh!

Photons carry momentum which they can transfer to a solar sail, but they massless as far as we can tell.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by organic? Do you mean complex systems that follow complex rules?

" Also, do we really need the hyperlink to www.microsoft.com in the article? I think we all know how to get there by now."
Well I know how to get to google, but I still use a bookmark/button/link.

One big problem, its ugly.

I'll probably be modded down for this, but what do you expect from slashdot drones?

Yeah, and with all the games you have to choose from your friends will be lining up at your door!
The commercial version of Locutus, Locutus Enterprise, will enforce "military grade" encryption over all files shared.
