How will I be alone? The 'you' in my post was the parent, the AC who posted the joke. I said he was going to hell and I may join him since I found it funny. I also found it funny that you didn't get it. I would have thought you'd hear that sort of joke all the time.
They don't put it on file. It's scanned as they send you the email and the ad is attached. Then the software forgets about your email and any words it saw there. And don't bother countering with "that's what they tell you" because if you think like that then your email is presumably already encrypted, your snail mail is in code and signed accross the envelope seal and you don't use the telephone.
They don't "find out what your interests are". The software scans, attaches ads, then forgets the content of your email. There's no cummulative build up of information about you and no human ever sees the email.
Excellent, that's how I interpreted it too. It sounds good if this gets passed. I don't live in the US - so your representatives wouldn't really have any need to listen to me - but this sort of descision affects the rest of the world too, especially by influencing other lawmakers. I hope the EU is paying attention.
It's not specifically mentioned in any of the articles but I would imagine that the (proposed) right to make backup copies of DVDs would extend to a right to decrypt DVDs for any other legal reason, including watching DVDs under Linux (which requires cracking the encryption). Can anyone shed any light on this? Is is purely for making copies or does it allow for other decryption-requiring activities?
I think I know truth and I'm an atheist and a scientist. Fit me into your theory. Your characterisation of 2 is just plain wrong and cultural reverence is the only thing that stops people from saying that 1 and 3 directly conflict all the time. All religions have their own cosmology and biology that is demonstrably false.
Many blogs have active discussions about news, technology, politics and any number of special interest and professional areas. They're not all teen angst, boring job, random thought livejournals. Sure 90% of weblogs are crap, but 90% of everything is crap.
I dislike Slashdot user Uma Thurman because Finuvir is all I want. But free speech gives us a bountiful array of choices. I don't get why Uma T. needs to run down someone else's review.
She needs to mind her own business and write about someone she DOES like rather than running down someone that she doesn't like.
I take your point and concede the presence of that construction for longer than I had realised, but I'm waiting to be told why "if I was" is unacceptable.
So you don't think Exxon or Shell could influence anyone? Microsoft may be the dominant company in US software but that's a long way from biggest company in the world. Even if you look at IT instead of just software, IBM could tear MS a new ass if they needed to. MS has shown political power because they needed to; many other companies could do the same in the face of a government suit.
Even by those measurements, Microsoft is a long way from being the most powerful or biggest company in the world. Consider oil, pharmaceuticals, electricity. They're the companies holding the leash around Bush's neck.
Bloody hell, that's ignorant. "I wish I was" has always been correct English, in Britain and America, while "I wish I were" has only recently been accepted by English dictionaries because illiterate foreigners bastardised the language to such an extent that the Brits picked up on it.
It's a hoop that's not there for pirated copies. And it's a hoop that shouldn't exist at all. I'm not inclined to give money to a company that assumes I'm a pirate by default and asks me to prove otherwise. Would you shop at a store where the security guard frisked you as you left every time (or even just the first time)?
Tic Tac Toe (aka Noughts and Crosses) loses all interest once you realise that it's impossible to win, you just wait for you oponent to lose. That is, you can't force a win, you just hope for a mistake.
A time updater. A date updater. A weather notifier. Hate to tell you, but I have a watch, a calendar, a radio, and a window. Between these four things, I think I'll know what the day/time is and what weather is coming.
You shouldn't use Windows! Oh, that kind of window. Well I guess that's safe enough, just... keep it up to date.
Why do people have such difficulty conducting interviews properly? They ask "Could you tell us somewhat more about the work that Xandros has done to integrate KDE in their products?" and the answer has all this stuff about XFM. Then they completely ignore the talk about XFM and move on, only to come back and ask "In the Xandros Desktop OS there is an application called "Xandros File Manager"[XFM]. Can you tell us a bit more about it and the technologies it support?" later. Did they just write down a list of questions and not probe the interesting answers? Okay so maybe they just sent a list of questions and published the list of answers they were sent back, but they really should have tried to integrate this stuff into a decent flow. It reads very badly.
I know people who have installed pirated versions of WinXP because they were unwilling to jump through Microsoft's 'activation' hoops. They're rewarded with a 'free' upgrade to XP Pro and punished by being completely riddled with security holes.
Yes but that stuff can't reasonably be considered Computer Science any more than butchery can be considered biology. Note that this doesn't imply anything bad about coding or butchery, it's just a distinction.

Simultaneously the most and least appropriate thing to say. I hope hell is fun for you, I may see you there.

Doesn't president just mean village idiot now?
I don't think I can offer any comfort to you in your current diabolical situation... Perhaps you could go start a new life under the sea?

No they're not.
It's 'repeat 2-4' not 'GOTO 1'. If anything a programmer would see that instruction as ambiguous and just ignore it (or throw an exception).
I assume you're not in a position to say "I'm the designer, don't tell me how to design"?

Huh? What was that noise? It's just a box...
