  1. Eew, RPM... on Gentoo Linux Rethinks Package Management System · · Score: 1

I'm sorry, but even though I use an RPM based distro (SuSE), I can't stand the RPM tools. Why can't they use something much nicer, like the DEB tools. I'd kill for a version of apt-get for SuSE, but nope, I've gotta go through their YaST software to get updates. Icky stuff. Go with the Debian Package Manager, nicer and more friendly.

  2. Can already be done... on Progeny Releases Linux Platform Manager · · Score: 1

A distro where you can select what gets installed. I'm not sure about other distros, but in SuSE, during the installation, just deslect everything, and select only those things which you need. Then everything that those programs depends on is also automatically installed. Easy as that. Plus, with SuSE, there's an automatic network installer, just as RedHat has one. So it sounds to me as if they're doing nothing but repackaging ideas that already exist and claiming them as their own. And as to the custom kernel stuff. That's what modules are for, so only the stuff that you need gets loaded.

They're completely banning this game's advertising and shelf space. Come on man, the game would suck if they were to add a negotiate module that you had to go through before that. I can just imagine:
Friends: "Dude, come on over, I've got the new Halo game on my GameCube."

Not only that, but if the university wanted to try to filter out all filesharing, then you could just run your freenet node through port 80, and it'll look something like ssl traffic if I'm not mistaken (please correct me if I'm wrong in that bit of info).

I'm sure that a similar program, if not apt, can be created to automatically download and update new opensource programs. So maybe instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, they could just do that.
