  1. Platform promotion? on Hotmail On Your Desktop · · Score: 5, Insightful
it's going to be free software

    Define "free".

Realistically, I would imagine that it's a teaser that will be Vista only, or will only be fully featured on Vista.

  2. Running the Stats on Australian Rules to Crackdown on Spam · · Score: 3, Insightful
The rate of spam originating in Australia had fallen in the past 12 months from 2 per cent to 1 per cent. But there was no accurate assessment of the amount of spam coming from overseas sources.

How do they know the percentage of Australian spam if they don't know the total amount of spam?

  3. Would a different approach be better? on Ballmer Babies Banned From iPods and Google · · Score: 5, Insightful
I've got my kids brainwashed: You don't use Google, and you don't use an iPod.

I'd take the other approach - if they choose rival manufacturers then study first hand why they do so.

First hand experience can tell you a lot more than market research sometimes, and might just give future MS products an edge.

Yeah maybe, but I suspect most of us would be far better served by experiencing improved health at our local sports club, and the social benefits are much better too.

  5. Not The Big Box on Viiv 1.5 May End Traditional Media PCs · · Score: -1
Instead, we'll be streaming content to digital media adapters from a PC in our home office.

No we wont. I'll be back on the couch as he describes, and certainly not walking into the "home office" to queue up my next piece of media.

Somewhere between a small laptop and a PDA / phone to transmit input via WiFi maybe, but replacing a home stereo component with a traditional PC will not catch-on.

  6. !!!!~11111!!! on Misconfigured Webserver, Threats to Call FBI · · Score: 5, Funny
"Get this web site off my home page!!!!! It is blocking access to my website!!!!~!," Taylor responded, clearly excited about the situation and sensing that Bin Laden was near.

He forgot the 1s but the tilda was creative.

  7. Google Launches on Google Pages Launches · · Score: 4, Insightful

It'll be interesting to watch how cautiously they approach this launch. After the Google Analytics launch debarcle I'll watch intensely at how much they've learned.

  8. Deeper level comparision on Gaming Now and 20 Years Ago · · Score: 5, Interesting
While the screenshots are nice, if you compared other metrics like customer satisfaction and average hours of game play per gamer, how would they stack up?

My bet would be they are a lot closer than this graphics comparision which was purely a technology problem.

  9. Layered Security on Sudo vs. Root · · Score: 4, Informative
The conventional wisdom is that sudo is the most secure way to run root commands, but a closer look reveals a picture that is not so clear.

The article doesn't say that sudo isn't the most secure way to run commands, it just details how to make it even more secure.

  10. It's ALL Vanity on FBI Agents Don't Have Email Access · · Score: 3, Funny

  11. The better version is just $30 and is available! on How Great Cheap Phones Never Get to the U.S. · · Score: 1
The color model, the C155, is available in the United States, sold by the prepaid wireless company TracFone online and through retail outlets such as Wal-Mart. For $29.98, you get the phone and the right to buy pay-as-you-go phone services.

There are expenses for businesses in having extended product line, especially when the market for these types of phones is limited (and they do offer the upgraded version anyway).

If you can get the upgraded colour version for only $30 anyway is there really a story here?

It's fascinating where the generous and charitable Bill Gates ends, and the ruthless businessman Bill Gates begins.

You would hope with his experience in the public eye, that he would have learnt that nobel efforts to help the less fortunate should be encouraged. Good luck to MIT and anyone associated with the project.

several agencies -- mostly those on the "front lines in the war on terror" -- actually managed to fare worse this year.

Considering that the findings are given back to the relevant departments to improve upon, going backwards requires that not only are services added but that their security efforts don't even improve or get worse with the new projects.

Perhaps the demands of IT in these departments have increased significantly to account for these services. Anyone know?
