  1. Never assume someone else's backup system works on What Was Your Worst Computer Accident? · · Score: 1

I was doing some simple work for a client, they had a fairly large database and it was now taking a while to simply start a new record because the program would search through all the active records, the easy solution was to move old records into folders (1997, 1998, 1999, etc...) So I move around the records and run a batch program to update the tracking records for the database. Well, it turns out the company had been creating their database incorrectly so that some of the info needed to create the track records was missing from the database records, ie. the billing information for about 5 years worth of business. So I figure, no big deal, restore the track records from the backup, have it cross reference all the billing info and then redo the track records again. Oops, their backup system DOESN'T WORK.

Luckily they had hard copies of all the billing info so they could look it up as needed.

So being the nice guy I am I designed a new backup system for them that day, so hopefully that won't be a problem again.

If String Theory is right, there are other branes millimetres away from us, but in a higher spatial dimension

For those that care to know, a brane is a superstring that is stretched out really, really big (well, actually it doesn't have to be big but, in context to the above comment it is.) One theory also states that the reason for the Big Bang was two of these massive branes banging into each other causing the energy from the collision to form all kinds of fun bits of matter in our brane, creating the universe as we know it

  3. something else to consider installing on Wiring a House While It's Still Being Built? · · Score: 2, Insightful

While you're pulling your network cable, also consider installing wiring for a security system, 4x24 works just fine, and you'll probably want solid core, easier to work with later. You don't really have to worry about putting it in conduit, but make sure you put nail-guards anywhere that it's going THROUGH a stud.
this article is a day or two old at this point so no one is probably going to read it, but trust me, it is worth it.

I really wonder why some of you folks seem to think it is ok to steal music, just like a Pawn Broker has to tell who sold stolen merchandise to him, why should Verison not have to do the same thing for music and movie thieves?

well, actually the pawn broker is required to inform the police who sold him stolen merchandise, but this is actually a trade off so that the pawn broker doesn't get into trouble for recieving stolen merchandise. In the case of Verison, they aren't being required to release the information to police, they are being required to release the information to a corporation. Also, Verison isn't in a situation where they can be tagged for recieving stolen merchandise as they aren't the ones recieving anything, it't the end user that is recieving the stolen merchandise.

So, what it comes down to is that with your analogy of the pawn broker, if the police catch an end user for recieving music or movies over a peer-to-peer network they can cut a deal with the end user where the end user will reveal who they got the music or movies from in order to avoid getting in trouble for recieving stolen movies or music.

  12. Re:Microsoft losing money on the sale of every Xbo on Linux on Xbox One Step Closer? · · Score: 1

Very little could ever harm Microsoft, sure the development costs for this may have been millions, but they make more than that every day. I've just gotten tired of reading the stupid excuse of "If you buy an Xbox Microsoft loses money" from all of these people that claim to hate Microsoft. If you truly hate Microsoft that much then don't use any of their products. If you only really really dislike them but are still willing to buy their products then buy them. If you feel ashamed of your purchase don't lie to people you don't know and don't try to disillusion yourself by coming up with flimsy excuses as to why you bought one of Microsoft's products. Also as a side note: Make sure you know why you hate Microsoft so much before you begin telling everyone in the world that you hate them. Don't just hate them because it's popular to hate them, come up with a real reason. I dislike Microsoft for various reasons, I've disliked them for quite a long time now, and it's not just because a bunch of people I know hate them, it's because I hate them for their business practices, the way Bill Gates has stabbed every one of his collegues and business parners in the past. Do a little research before you begin to hate someone, you may even learn to hate them more.
