There is also an option to claim fair use (although I think it uses different words) after it identifies a song. I did this for an artwork of mine on Youtube that included the first 30 seconds of a Cure song, and the video stayed. I really do think that in my case, it was fair use. But if you're just trying to upload an old Pearl Jam video, then this probably won't help.

I read that paper. Here is the only thing that you can take from it: in a given time frame, the people who upload a greater number of videos during that time will be less likely to have a very popular video. The rest is poorly thought out "what ifs". The paper assumes that correlation is causation (uploading more videos decreases your chances or success) but it could just as easily be the other way around. And they don't mention any sort of research or metric for measuring "video quality" other than making the assumption that a user's videos improve in quality over time.

A bit off topic, but I've recently changed my thinking a bit about this whole debate, and I'm wondering why ID or other philosophical concepts can't be discussed in schools as philosophy? ...as long as it's made clear that evolution is science and any questions about the existence of the universe or life or some kind of intelligence other than humans is (currently) philosophy. I think open discussions of philosophy in logical, rational terms among kids is a good thing, and might be more beneficial to science than just pretending like the debate doesn't exist, and letting religious-fanatic parents program their kids without addressing the issue at all in schools.

In the "Legal Issues" section of the article, I expected to see something about the issue of FFMPEG potentially infringing on existing patents. Instead there's just some stuff about violating the GPL. Seems like a major oversight to me.

What *is* up with the patent issue? Is it possible to use FFMPEG legally in commercial software if you adhere to the GPL and buy licenses for the patents that you're using? Since I already paid for software that includes encoders for some of these patented codecs, does that allow me to legally use FFMPEG? In my lifetime, how many times do I have to pay the patent fees for MPEG2 encoding?

My experience is that, aside from state of mind and environment (which is very important), one of the biggest problems with LSD use is that the potency is so unpredictable. LSD is, by orders of magnitude, more potent than most other recreational drugs. One hit of blotter could contain a very small dose, or it could contain many times a typical dose. Back when I used LSD in the 90's, one hit of blotter would generally vary from 1/4 of a reasonable dose to 5x a reasonable dose, but most people do not take this into consideration. You're likely to have a rough time when you get one of those strong hits and eat the whole thing.

I think that if you're going to do LSD, it is important to evaluate the potency beforehand. Buy several hits of blotter at once, and start off by setting aside a day and taking 1/4th or 1/8th of a hit to see how strong it really is. Keep in mind that if it's really strong, then it could result in a full trip even with so little, so be prepared. And don't take 1/4th and then later take more when it seems like it's not that strong -- it can take hours for it to really kick in. I've made that mistake. Also note that you can't evaluate it the day before you intend to take a full dose because tolerance goes way up for a few days after you use it. Different people react in different ways to LSD, so don't just take other people's word for how strong it is.

Not to advocate drug use or anything...

We had to abandon it, it was just too ambitious, and during the time that I was working on it my schedule was gradually getting more and more ridiculous. The display code for that RPG was pushing the Atari so hard, and so it was very delicate and became time-consuming to keep in balance. Most of the display, music, map-handling, and memory management was in place. But the battle system and overall RPG design were just getting started. I've had some people interested in the code for other 2600 RPG projects so something may still come out of it.
