  1. Soulseek on Useful Apps for First-Time Windows Users? · · Score: 1

Soulseek is the one program my Mac friends are jealous about. A P2P program that tends towards indie, electronic, and other more obscure music.

  2. Re:This American Life & Car Talk on NPR & The Modern Media Distribution · · Score: 1

I tried Audible for TAL. The quality is advertised as "FM Radio" but it's barely AM quality, and it comes in DRM'd format that I couldn't (easily) get only my portable MP3 player. The RealPlayer streams from the TAL website are actually significantly better quality than the files you get from Audible. I just ended up ripping the RealPlayer streams and donating the money I would have given to Audible directly to TAL.

  3. Re:Google's first serious misstep? on Google Music Store Inches Closer? · · Score: 1

What we really need, is Google (or another well-publicized company) to become a music label.

There are already plenty of great indie labels. We just need Google to support them in lieu of majors.

  4. Bad Casting on The Simpsons Come to Life · · Score: 4, Insightful

It's still a fun trailer, and I know they're never going to really look like the Simpsons, but it's like they didn't even try! At the very least, Marge needs a beehive. And pick a girl that looks a little nerdy with short hair for Lisa. They obviously spent some money on the filming and effects, but it's like they cast from whoever happened to be around the studio that day.

  5. TI Controller? on Top 10 Worst Game Controllers · · Score: 2, Insightful

The TI controllers actually work pretty well, and they're really reliable too. Maybe a little awkward to hold, but not nearly as bad as the Colecovision controllers! How did those not make the list?

It's not just on that end either. With videoblogs and such, those webhosts that offer up to 500GB+ of transfer and massive storage for really cheap are starting to have problems as people actually begin using more than a small percentage of what they offer.

So basically, in order to successfully reveal information, you have to reveal somehow that you're in a position to know that information...

That doesn't always mean you have to give away your identity. If you anonymously tell a reporter that there's a dead body under some rock, then if there's a dead body there, you've certainly earned some cred. You gotta lead whoever you're telling to the evidence so they can prove it themselves. Not possible in all situations tho.

  15. Of COURSE They Are!! on 'Games Are Not Art' - The Fault of Game Journalists · · Score: 1

I can't believe this repeatedly comes up like it's some mysterious question that needs to be worked out. Just like every other artform in existence, they range from commercial work that would be considered "craft" and definitely not "fine art", they have a middle point of indie games that are more arty and experimental but still accessible (maybe Katamari or Colossus), and there are extremely experimental games that are more about expression or defining the nature of video games.

I think the problem with the articles about this subject is that the writers don't know much about current new media art, and aren't aware of the purely conceptual game art going on, like this or this or this.

  16. Wireless Earbuds/Headphones on Next Generation of MP3 Glasses · · Score: 1

Howabout just some wireless headphones or earbuds that can clip onto your glasses. Then you can choose the mp3 player you want (or use the one you already have), and more importantly, choose some glasses that don't make you look like a complete fool.

  21. Maybe not on Xbox 360 Very Unstable · · Score: 1

That's what I thought, but the following post (from this page) makes it sound like they're having more problems than expected:

    makaveli87 said:
"Ok I phoned tech support, I was on hold for about 40min. The first guy didn't really know what he was talking about, he kept trying to tell me to do things I had already tried like unplug everything or "read the manual" so he connected me to someone else. This guy seemed like a gamer or he at least knew what he was talking about. He told me that they were having several problems with the launch consoles, the hdd problem, overheating, something to do with the HD to SDTV thing on the back, game disks being scratched , problems with the operating system and a few disk read errors.

He said the overheating problem will be the most common and that this is what I have. (If your console turns off or the screen freezes 90% of the time its an over heating issue. If you get one of the error screens its and OS problem.) he said for both of these problems they need to replace the console and that it would take 6-10 weeks!!! I asked why and he said that they are experiencing more problems then hey had hoped and that he is supposed to say 6-8 weeks, but last week he was telling people 4-6 and those people would be waiting until mid-january. He wouldn't go further into that though. He did tell me that I could hold onto the system and use it as much as I can for 2 or 3 weeks, send it in then and I would still get it back 6-10 weeks from now.

Anyways the warranty covers any of those major problems I stated above so that's good. I guess #1 on MS list is to sell all of their consoles to new customers and let the people with problematic ones wait until after the holidays."

While it would be retarded to "teach" creation as science, I also hope that all this doesn't stop teachers from intelligently discussing both sides of the issue in class. It is an important, current issue and it's a problem science has faced since the beginning. Personally, I think a smart open discussion of the debate in class would be more likely to get kids thinking independently and part them from the dogmatic religious views that their parents may impose. Discuss it as an example of what differentiates science from religion and philosphy.

I use Myspace to promote my band, and there are a ton of hot chicks that are on my band's friend list. But my girlfriend is the other member of my band, so it's kind of a catch 22. ;o)

  25. Re:Kill A Watt on Curbing Energy Use In Appliances That Are Off · · Score: 1

I just use a multimeter to measure the current draw. Easiest way is to plug the device into an extension cord off-set, so only one prong is actually plugged in. Then set your meter to current measurement, and bridge the connection with the two multimeter probes. current x voltage = watts. Saves you $35 if you got a multimeter laying around or can borrow one.
