1 - I notice that by reading BoingBoing I keep seeing/. stuff two days early.
2 - This reminds me of Soviet military doctrine. They wanted to plug a motor rifle company into the line and supply it with ammo only for five days, then unplug it, plug another one in, move the first unit to the rear, burn their uniforms, issue them new weapons and give them five days of eating and sleeping before plugging them back in.
I remember THAT book. That's the book where Wolfram compares himself to Newton in the first paragraph of the introduction.
Wolfram is a great math pro, but the only way he could help Newton is to shine his shoes.
It's like the von Neumann bottleneck, where 10 % of the code is run 90 % of the time. Truth be told, the REAL von Neumann bottleneck is that only 10 % of computer scientists are even 90 % as smart as von Neumann.
In spite of their propensity for guns and the fact that they make bitchin' tanks, the Americans know jack about security.
Before it was 'This is a picture of Mohammed Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers' now it will be 'This is a picture of Mohammed Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers. These are the fingerprints of Mohammed Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers. This is the retinal print of Mohammed Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers. This is how many hairs he had on his left butt cheek. This is how many hairs he his on his RIGHT butt cheek....'
The point is all you REALLY needed to know was that he was an Al-Quida sleeper agent, and they didn't know that.
This guy is nothing but some 9 Dan pro slumming. No big deal. The REAL big deal would be if it was a program. That would be UBER-REVOLUTIONARY as programs famously suck at Go.
To cover my ass though - a 9 Dan pro is God Almighty at Go. I will never beat one. I saw a 9 Dan pro play a 6 Dan amateur on a Go server. He spotted the amateur 9 stones and was behind all the way to the end where he pulled ahead and just beat the guy by 3 stones. He knew all along what he was doing. It was slick as hell.
Here's the kicker though - while he was doing this he was also playing another guy at the same time. That's right - he was playing two games at ther same time and he STILL beat a 6 Dan amateur with a 9 stone handicap. Amazing.
They know they have new engine types on one side of them and the ominous spectre of Omnicron, Devourer Of Planets - excuse me, I mean Bill Gates, on the other.
I say they're cashing in before they either sell out to M$ or hit the silk when the company craps out.
This is definitely a scam by the suits to get back the personal computer thing they let slip away from them, that mutated in the internet monster that is now eating their lunch.
Don't forget a lot of established businesses count on people's ignorance and lack of options. When they lose those things, profits go down and we cant have that!
Why is no one talking about the DRM issue? The content people will be RABID about getting control over THIS new format - and re-writables? And burning? I becha no way!
I don't want to wait ten minutes to send an email! Don't inconvenience everybody just because of a handful of criminals!
There are LOTS better ways to check for this, like for instance, see if the attachment is a Trojan? THAT would be nice and eliminate most of the Spam right there!
I do NOT consider it a violation of my privacy to not get a virus! I expect no privacy in un-encrypted emails anyway!
ALSO - might they not notice that something is funny about someone sending 100,000 emails? Hmm?
All with VIAGRA or PENIS in the title?
Stopping Spam is EASY if they just get a grip! No need for any stupid protocols at all!
I used to play the only avaliable chess program - Checkmo II - on paper tape on a PDP 8-I.
I have the tech book on it and I often thought it was very close to the theoretical model of what a computer should be. Very good for first year comp sci students I figure.
One - a TRS-80 I ran BASIC and Miller Microcomputer FORTH on and two - an Atari 400 I played games on - including Chris Crawford's 1941 - When I took Moscow and held it for 3 days with Das Reich #2 SS tank division, it was the pinnacle of my gaming experience up to that time, and still a great memory.
It was designed to eliminate people in widely contrasting contests of mind and body - for example the first one was a marathon. the top half of competitors would move on a tournament in say, some lesser board game like checkers.
Then the top half them run 100 meters - the top half of that play another game etc.
In the end the top 16 play a chess tournament then the top 8 chess players run 5 miles then the top 4 5-milers play Go and the best two Go players fight it out in a Ultimate Fighting championship sort of thing (but this was some years before UF)
The problem is not people intercepting your mp3s - the problem is sharing an mp3 with a guy working for the RIAA or in my case the CRIA and they get your IP and then they go to your ISP in an attempt to get you booted off the net, exactly as happened to me.
For instance - on Sourceforge there is a sooperencypted IRC project for safe sharing.
Useless.
All the RIAA spies have to do is go on the net, get that software, join the queue for mp3s then rat you out exactly as specified above.
What we NEED is a way to share files in such a manner as the receiver has no idea what your IP is.
This is not going to be easy. (And please don't mention Freenet ok?)
This is the second time a /. reviewer has put a spoiler in the review. Whats up with these guys?

This DARPA thing sounds like that.
As in Casinos where they all make money until Casino n+1, then they all lose money.
The best we can hope for in this is a Golgotha-like releasing of code, textures and models to the rest of the world. That would be fun.
(The determination of n is left as an exercise for the student.)
Back to Minix, I say! Things were BETTER then!
And we LIKED it that way!

and I noticed when they got broken, they stayed broken. That is, their condition was always chronic.
There's software out there so anyone can sign a certificate. Who needs the suits at Verisign?
I was taught on a course the way to keep people motivated is set it up so they get %75 success rate.
Seems the AI should always move towards that.

but I say it's a cashout by the Google boys.

OR it might survive anyway. Either way, they win.
This has been on boingboing and fleshbot for a WEEK!
Jeez!
I can TYPE one-handed! Does that count?
or putting sparklies on them so they can be seen even though they're whirling at high speed.
On the other hand, that might ATTRACT the birds....

is Doom 3 as far as I am concerned.
Duke Nuken Forever is the most awaited game of 4002....

I invented some years ago.

Who knows - this could catch on!
I never did beat V. And there was no quick way in, either...

Ok it's great - but I don't appreciate it killing my bookmarks.
