An idea, spoken in public, is public property. Period. Doesn't matter if the "idea" is a song, a computer program, a movie, or anything else.
Are you engaged in the production of one of these ideas? Because simply saying that "passionate people" will fill the production of ideas.. well, some ideas are harder to make than others.
Movies with high production values cost millions to make. Games and programs do too. It's all well and good to say that they should be free, but I don't know any companies that are willing to risk millions in production if their competitors can legitimately sell the same thing on zero-day.
I know a lot of individuals who would, granted.. but I don't know any individuals capable of "The Incredibles."
I would like to applaud you for being honest. There is a web of self-deception many (not all) downloaders have created to justify their actions. Most people.. they just want something for free.
This is not an international dick-waving contest to see who can 'contribute' the most. How about we just help them, OK?
This is the most insightful comment made today. That and the link to amazon. goddammit.
This disaster has nothing to do with greehouse warming and the increase in water 'mater,' and everything to do with earthquakes. In fact, I cannot comprehend what sort of though processes could lead to such a conclusion.
PS. Please do not spin tragedy into personal political agenda. Bush did that too.
What if I ran a booth that sold information to where to find not automatic weapons, but prostitutes? I'm just helping interested clients find interested hookers. Wouldn't I be a pimp or a madam?
You're allowed to download such material under current fair use laws for personal use, as long there's no intention for profit.
I thought this urban myth was dead. Unless you're talking about finnish law (which I don't know), "fair use" does not cover distributing OR downloading 'The Life Aquatic' without permission from the author--regardless of circumstances.
Grandparent does not RTFA. Posts an attack consisting of one lie + one rumor propogated by an anonymous coward as a social experiment:
which he admits. Grandparent is modded up.
The AUTHOR of the article posts a defense...and is modded a troll.
I did that. They don't care; they spam anyway. I auto-blacklist anything that looks like a link. I still get hundreds of *misconfigured* and ineffective spam.
hate to reply to myself, but realized my post was ambiguous. the STUDENTS won the case, and changed the name as part of the settlement that granted them a 50k operating budget over 10 years, 3 grant porgrams established in their name, and a cover story in the alumi magazine about how great they were!
This happened to my school, Claremont Mckenna. A student registered claremontmckenna.com, and started posting news articles critical of the administration.
They were sued for trademark violation.. but then they actually took it to court and won the case; countersued; and eventually settled. (the site is now cmcstudents.com)
As I've heard a starving artist say, "You can give whatever reason you want for downloading mp3s instead of buying CDs, and I'm okay with that. Just don't tell me that you're doing it to help me make a living.
The "partial data" is almost certainly a checksum, that takes hundreds of datapoints and combines them into one non-reversible number. This is also done with text passwords.
A xerox of a finger won't work, since this is not an optical scanner. it measures the capacitance between ridges. Any fake is going to need to be 3D, have the electrical properties of a human, and be swipeable (so perhaps not jello..)
Finally, I doubt that the signal to the bios is as simple as a on-off circuit. To begin with, this is probably a single chip seated on a board, not tied with alligator clips and wire. More likely it uses the CPU to compare checksums.. in any case, I'm sure IBM employs intelligent people.
no text. DONGS!
Why not go after them both?
I'm sorry for you and those around you. Good luck in the future.
If the government funds all movies, music, and entertainment.. isn't that the start of a pretty effective propaganda machine?

it's a moral "can", not a possible "can". It is moral to each anything, but it is not advisable.
Perhaps... he has a DVD burner.

and frankly, I think everyone update software too fast and patches too slow..
As you and your modder point out, it's a good thing this laptop has hardware encrytion.
