If the RIAA had a clue, they would realize that college students are going to have a big say in this country someday
PEDANTIC
College students will never have a meaningfull say in this country until they can be bothered to vote or show a willingness to donate / organize for political groups (however, as you no doubt meant, today's college students may well have a big say in this country in the future).
Think the war in Iraq is wrong? Think pot shouldn't be a schedule A drug? Nobody cares unless your voting block can make a difference in an election.
I see no legal difference between taking a competitors traffic and putting in a low queue, and simply blocking Vonage's entire IP range for the PSTN gateways totally. Poof, end of competition. The effect is the same, why not just be explicit and target individuals?
How does this effect the telecom's common carrier status?
and why is breaking into their systems any worse that breaking into a normal system?
They have lots and lots of resources. In the same way a T1 connected Xeon server is a more attractive target than my pII with 56k dialup grid systems are much more attractive targets than almost anything else out there.
Why wouldn't it be simpler to just fill the tank, run the car, and then see how much fuel it takes to refill the tank?!? Is there some reason this wouldn't be a reliable test?
Where would you run the test? Denver? Sea Level? Uphill? Downhill? At what speed? At what prevailing winds? How fast would you accelerate?
The odd part is that while driving where you aren't using the brakes a lot, the transmission, weight improvements and aerodynamics will be the only improvements in your efficiency.
Driving without braking a lot (usually) implies driving without accelerating a lot. I don't think weight should make much of a difference.
Here in Spain over a million people regularly turned out for protests again the war last year.
It's easy to protest when you don't think you have any skin in the game. Unfortunately not everyone can cede the responsibility to stand up for what is right. Because of their economic and military prowess the US has been a prime target of attack and must reserve the right to join battles to protect their citizens. While there are many valid reasons to fault American leadership, appeasing terrorists in a wrongheaded and cowardly attempt protect Spanish citizens and to spite the US is not a productive way to register displeasure. Why not just vandalize a McDonalds? Better yet, promise - and deliver - support for a limited approach to deter terrorism that Spain supports.
Of course, no one should be surprised that following French "leadership" isn't exactly the best of political moves.
Spain is out of the war, but the public professions of weakness in the face of adversity not only caused the horrible train bombing in Madrid, but will cause more deaths as the American elections roll around. Hopefully the lives of American servicemen will help to keep you safe.
Unfortunately the US will not be able to do anything to deter Spanish internal terrorist groups. What lesson do you think the ETA learned from the public professions of weakness?
The problem is that the word "irregardless" breaks all rules about word construction in the English language. The root word is "regard". "regardless" means to have no regard, as per standard English suffixing rules. "irregardless" represents the negation of the word "regardless", as per standard English prefixing rules. So, it must mean to not not have regard for. IOW, it's a double negative, all in one word. It's like someone saying "unthaw" when they really mean "thaw"... it's just - plain - wrong!
Watch what you say. Your ideas are inflammable.
Look, this software is STOLEN. Microsoft owes these thieves nothing.
By virture of Microsoft dumping (intentionally allowing the piracy of) their OS in order to prevent competition, they should be held responsible for the problems this causes. Ideally this responsibility would be in the form of a huge cash payment to the Open Source world, but reducing the number of viruses spewed into the world would be nice too. Society shouldn't have to pay for Microsoft's marketing campaign.
I bet you dont start bleating away when a flaw is found in Apache or sshd do you?... No, of course not, different rules for FOSS isnt it?
It's a lot harder to steal Apache, and damn near impossible to withold/limit who has access to the patches.
the fight between Sauroman and Gandalf would be dueling banjos
Sauroman could start off something like this:
The devil opened up his case and he said,
"I'll start this show."
And fire flew from his fingertips
As he rosined up his bow
And he pulled the bow across the strings
And it made an evil hiss
Then a band of demons joined in
And it sounded something like this

I understand the format of the GRE is like that of the SAT, just harder and with a extra "analytic" section.
Actually, the GRE math sections are easier than the SAT math because there is an assumption that most people do not use algebra / geometry skills after High School.
but I must point out that it is always people who test average or below (or, in general, are unsatisfied with the results of thier own tests) who make these statements, or say that it only tests "test taking" ability, or "book smarts".
Well, I got a 1440 before the recentering (and fell asleep during the test!) and I belive the tests are fundamentally flawed and end up being much more a test of test taking ability than of anything remotely usefull.
It is a travesty that SAT scores are used for anything more than entertainment purposes, especially within 1 standard deviation of the mean, which is where people tend to place the most emphasis on scores.
I think a couple of your assumptions are off and that is confusing you.
1.) When you say "the value (read: size) of the company must grow" you should mean the value (read: dollar value) must grow.
2.) The economy is not bounded in the terms that you are thinking; over the last 200+ years the GDP has continued to grow, and there is no reason to think it will stop.
3.) A company that produces a flat profit each year is increasing in value as long as it dosen't give back all the profits as dividends.
The whole speculation thing is essentially a bet as to future profits a company will make.
Unfortunately a lot of people here in the US pick careers based on how much money they can make, rather than having any aptitude for the given task.
That market economy sure is a bitch. Imagine the gall of these people chosing to do what society most needs them to do, so the rest of us can have a better, easier life.
Who would think that a decade after CNN's brilliant reporting in the (first) Gulf War, Connie Chung would be sensationalizing the news on prime time. I was so embarrassed for them I changed the channel.
The ten commandments?
Right... because everybody knows that options are completely unimportant in the tech world.
At the very least, the discussion is worthwhile because it significantly ups the level of discourse around here.
On the other hand, you would make your employees very happy if you had gone binary instead.

How does this effect the telecom's common carrier status?
Distributed groups of computers working together.
and why is breaking into their systems any worse that breaking into a normal system?

When will people learn that no matter what you look like on the inside, if you take your computer to a sandy environment you may get sand in it.
To my mind, a legitimate, if naive question.
What do your friends do when you ask a stupid question?
