How about this, You buy a scrambled DVD and you have to use secret decoder glasses to watch it. You could get special decoder glasses in cereal boxes to view easter eggs and special features. Or maybe you could get retinal implants that would decode scrambled HD signals. This could get really ridiculous... If you attempt to view a movie that you haven't purchased then on the first offense your optic nerve chip blinds you for 10 minutes, 1 hour on the second offense, and life on the third.
Speaking of ridiculous, if piracy is wrong, why is Disney glamorizing it in another movie?
A large portion of every rich person estate goes to the government, whether they are criminals or not. It's called the estate tax and if your estate is worth more than two million and you don't shelter the US government will take 48%.
Doing family support is terrible, doing in-law support is worse. After spending my own money to upgrade the memory and video card of my mother-in-law's computer so my brother in-law could use it to play newer games (aren't i a nice guy) my sister in-law accused my of "breaking the computer." After a family conference and much convincing I pointed out the announcement on her university's website that notified the users of email server upgrades that would make student email unavailable over most of the holidays.
Sounds like something my wife would do. "You're not doing it right, why don't you do it like this, that's not how I would do it. Why don't you ever listen to me?"
If six people are carrying a crate and five people decided to drop the crate and they let the sixth know that they are about to drop the crate and that person still holds on to the crate and gets crushed, then that person is DUMB. Natural selection really sucks if you're not the fittest.
I pay about US$4k a year for the privilege, supplied by a government interest free loan.
You're interest charges are not free. They are paid for by the taxpayers of the United States Government. You will never receive anything free from a government that you and others pay taxes to fund.
With a voucher based system, the government can cut corners by putting more of the burden on the people, and then the children of poor people get screwed.
I'm not a voucher advocate, in fact, I'd prefer the complete elimination of the government rationing of education (government funding). But you're mistaken in your assumption that the government puts the burden on the people to fund education with a voucher system. The burden IS ALREADY on the people. Who do you think funds government in the US? Removing government or public funding of education doesn't increase a "burden." It does however increase individual responsibility. Ultimately people are responsible for their own and their children's education anyway.
Yo! I'm from Memphis, too. The state of public education here is a microcosm of how really broken a socialized education system is. The problem is made worse by the nationalization of the educational system. Income is collected at a national level, by highly paid bureaucrats, where it sits in the treasury. Then that money is argued and lobbied over by other highly paid bureaucrats. Then it is disproportionally distributed to the states where it is again argued and lobbied over so it can be disproportionally redistributed to the municipalities. Where it is again, you guessed it, handled by more bureaucrats and politicians. The whole system is highly inefficient and in effective in handling funding for the schools.
There is another problem with the collectivist education on a federal level. Washington has no idea how to educate the children of Memphis. Memphians don't need the same information that is needed by Seattlites. It is much more important for Memphians to understand the history and technology of agriculture. While children of the northwest would be better suited to learn how a fish hatchery works. This kind of information just can't be funded or disseminated at a federal level.
You have it completely wrong. People say that we will always need ditch diggers and toilet cleaners. With technology we've invented backhoes and ditch witches, toilet cleaning additives and tank drop-ins that keep toilets clean much longer.
The economic issue in play is the Chinese Government that is rationing education for their own benefit. Privatizing and deregulating the educational process will introduce economic competition that will spur growth in the education industry and increase the supply.
A private system would be detrimental to the totalitarian state that is the Peoples Republic of China. Keeping people dumb keeps them under your thumb. America's elementary and secondary educational system is run in much the same way. Privatization of education is the only real solution.
I'm allergic to cats. However, I find that I don't have allergic reactions to Ragdoll Cats. So I'm able to tolerate my wife's cat. I've heard people call ragdolls "hypoallergenic" in the past. Maybe they are just less so. BTW, I paid $200 for the cat, not $4000.
You would think that a bank, of all places, would not allow writable and removeable storage AT ALL. There are ways to disable automount/autorun usb devices in Windows. I blame the admins and their security policies. Users will always be DUMB.

Wow, this should make the world a safer place. I guess I can sleep soundly tonight. How the hell are they going to enforce this?
The difference between Google and most big spyware companies is that the Spyware makers promise a valuable service, while Google delivers unobtrusively
I have no problem answering surveys for those mall clipboard guys as long as I'm not in a hurry. I have no problem allowing Google tracking my web habits, as long as I'm getting something valuable, Gmail, Maps, Earth, Search, et. al. in return. When I quit finding their apps useful, I'll rescind my offer to be profiled.
You shouldn't have been modded down. You have a valid point, but until last year I and the accountant weren't here. We're in the process of turning things around now.
My dad uses an excel password cracker to routinely fix errors in locked formulas because the IT department has a one-week turn around on such problems. He hasn't gotten in trouble... yet.
No kidding. I had to compute 5 year straight-line depreciation for accounting records going back to 1992, to insure our estimates were correct. I wasn't going to compute 10 different formulas for each year that also omitted equipment sold during those years. The result was a 20 line excel formula that required a little programming prowess. I'm the IT guy here and don't normally do accounting stuff, but it wouldn't have gotten done by our deadline without me. Most accountants do not have the programming knowledge to use spreadsheets effectively. And most schools do not teach spreadsheets at the level that is needed in the real world. It really is a forgotten realm in the industry. Oh yeah, and F1 really helps when you get stuck.
At my campus the drone of the fans and heat generated by the desktops is incessant. In most cases it's 90 deg F plus in the computer labs. This with a flat panel monitor would be a welcome change, even with WinCE.
No it's like charging $30,000 for a car, then charging you $500 for a anti-theft system... wait I think they do that. It's like charging you $30,000 for a car and then charging you $50 a month to park it in a secure garage... wait no, that makes sense too. My analogies suck today. DIE MICROSOFT DIE!
Well that shure beats the hell out of a ginsu.

I hardly believe they would have been arrested if they purchased the info from LexisNexis. This wasn't identity theft, it was digital shoplifting.
Sounds like something my wife would do. "You're not doing it right, why don't you do it like this, that's not how I would do it. Why don't you ever listen to me?"

Actually, I'm a Frat Boy.

I hope that this MySpace account is blowing up with messages. A subject line of "Give Back the SIDEKICK!" would be sufficient. I've done my part.

Yes, there is nothing new under the sun. Now if I can only teach my wife to pour me a beer and give me a lot of head....
