we all know that the specifications have changed. The time line grew, and the budget was too low to begin with.

Neither.
I have a combination of both, college theory and my own learning. The problem with on your own, is people only care about the "RIGHT NOW" idea.. the "I need to learn this because it's what I need to complete this task", then it's added to their basket of tricks.
The problem with the theory students? it's all they've got. they know about some douche-bag that make some theory that they try to make everything fit into.
My way of thinking, either you've got the analytical and logical processes to do the job, or you don't. Just because you can get a degree in the field doesn't mean you're really cut out for it.
The degree just gets you in the door.
But that's me, and I just happen to hate people. Degree's don't impress me, and never will... exceptional thinking, creativeness, and the like are impressive, and colleges don't teach people how to do that. They just teach you regurgitation processes.

You know the in's and out's of your own product. You can optimize code for your product, why should they have to optimize code for someone else's product? Maybe that company should be writing their own compilers?
Are people really that lazy? Why do the companies that _MAKE_ money get fucked over? because the little companies that only went into business to get a CHUCK of that money, are mad they're not getting enough... Fuck 'em.
